Chapter 8 - Chapter 7 – The Weight of a Cup

The Beginner Brewing Set wasn't glamorous.

Not even close.

When Jun pulled it from his system inventory, he almost laughed out loud.

Not because it was bad—But because it was exactly right.

A small ceramic dripper, white with a faint chip at the rim.

A battered hand grinder with faded markings and a slight squeak in the crank.

A portable metal kettle, dented on one side like it had taken a fall and kept going.

A canvas tote, soft with age, corners fraying just enough to suggest it had traveled before.

Nothing new.

Nothing shiny.

But everything he needed.

And all his.

He slung the tote over his shoulder and walked until the market noise faded into background blur.

Not far—just to the edge.

A quiet corner near an old stone bench where pigeons gathered like retired regulars.

No customers.

No crowd.

No system task hanging in front of him.

That was fine.

This brew wasn't for them.

It was for him.

He crouched down, placing the tote beside him with care.

The process, even before the first step, felt sacred.

He unpacked slowly.

Set the dripper atop a slightly chipped mug he'd found in the back of his old gear bag.

Measured beans by touch—pinch, roll, listen.

The hand grinder rasped unevenly, but he turned it patiently, feeling every gear catch, every bean crack, every release of potential locked inside.

The rhythm was meditative.

The kind that only came when no one was watching.

He found a street vendor nearby and paid 1 Note to fill the kettle with hot water.

The woman gave him a curious look, but said nothing.

He returned to the bench.

Steam leaked gently from the spout as he steadied the kettle.

The first pour was slow.

Intentional.

He let the grounds bloom—Watched them swell, breathe, rise.

Alive with hidden energy.

The aroma drifted upward.

Soft honey.

Stone fruit.

A whisper of cocoa.

It wasn't showy.

But it was real.

Jun didn't smile.

But his breath came easier.

He poured the rest of the water in smooth spirals.

Let the stream find its own pace.

Trusted gravity and grind.

The brew ran clean.

Steady.

No bitterness.

No rush.

Only motion.

He lifted the mug.

Felt the warmth seep into his palms.

Brought it to his lips and sipped.

Not the best he could ever be.

Not the worst he once feared.

Just… honest.

The cup told the truth.

And for now, that was enough.

A cough—low and uncertain—cut through the stillness.

Jun turned.

A young boy stood a few feet away, maybe eleven or twelve.

Hoodie too large, sleeves bunched at the wrists.

Shoes worn down at the heel.

The boy didn't speak.

Just pointed at the mug in Jun's hands.

Jun blinked.

Then nodded.

He poured a second cup without hesitation.

No words.

No explanations.

He held it out, both hands open.

The boy stepped forward slowly—cautious, as if unsure it wasn't a trick.

He took the mug with both hands, fingers trembling slightly as they touched the ceramic.

He sipped.

Paused.

Then—Smiled.

Not wide.

Not loud.

Just… real.

For a few heartbeats, the bench and the boy and the brew were the whole world.

Then the boy gave a quick, shy nod.

Turned.

Melted into the crowd without another word.

Jun didn't follow him with his eyes.

He just sat there, still cradling his own cup.

It felt different now.

Not heavier.

Not lighter.

Just… steadier.

Like it belonged in his hands.

Like he belonged here.

The kettle steamed faintly beside him.

The dripper sat rinsed clean in a towel.

Nothing dramatic.

But something had shifted.
