Chapter 7 - ashen pact

A week later...

Sitting on the white sheet that covered the bed, vale looked at the small stain on the bottom of his shirt and frowned.

'when did it....?'

As he pondered whether to rinse it with water of simply try to wipe it off, his attention was taken off the shirt when a knock came on the door.

Suddenly, his slightly sour mood lifted fully, he excitedly walked past the room to the toherside and Opened the door.

The room he was on was located was in a hallway like structure above a tavern like place.

It wasn't exactly tavern, as vale had been told, so he was curious what exactly he was.

As the wooden door Swung opened without a noise, a tall blonde man wearing a button up collar, grayish purple shirt with a badge of some sort on the left side of his chest, he had black trousers and a thin black long coat that rested on his shoulder.

He looked downwards a little to meet vale's eyes and said with a smile as he pulled the huge suitcase he was holding, his deep blue eyes gleaming slightly.

"Here! We can depart whenever you're ready, miste vale!"

Positivity practically radiated from him...

With a excited gleam in his gray eyes, vale stepped aside and gestured for him to enter.

The man, alan euro, entered the room and looked around the humble place ones.

It was a humble place, a modest bed, a small cabinet, a drawer as well as a closet.

There was a lamp on the drawer that looked quite antique, but other then that, nothing was lofty in the entire room

Alan sat down on the bed and placed the huge cuboid shapes suitcase on the bed and Opened it.

Vale walked closer to the bed and quickly peeked at the contents of the suitcase.

Inside, there were three weapons.

Firstly, there was a silver longsword with a black cross gaurd and a dark gray grip. It's body seemed to be mystical as it exuded a sense of sharpness simply from the touch, its edge was increadibly shape. and it had elegant designs on its base, kind of like a runic pattern...

The other two weapon were two, thin twin, single edged short swords. They had elegant dark gray texture while the edge of the blade was silver, as if made from different metals combined together.

There were multiple lines running across the edge of the blades.

Vale reached out and grabbed the black grip of the blade, feeling it in his hand, it felt increadibly light even though it was relatively more heavier compared to other weapons.

He rolled the blad in his hand once before looking at alan and nodding.

The man smiled pleasantly before taking the longsword and other shortsword off the suitcase and removing the receptacle that held the swords to reveal a inner compartment with two sheaths.

Both were made of somesort of dark gray leather but didn't exactly feel like leather.

The first was sheath for the longsword, the second was actually two sheaths combined into one by a strap, they were for the shortswords.

Alan looked at vale's expression for a while before standing up and waking towards the gate.

"I'll be downstairs, the dungeon entrance isn't far from here so we can go there by foot"

Saying so, alan exited the room leaving vale in the room alone.

The dungeon alan was taking about was 'the nullstar', a rank 6 dungeon that had appeared in the capital about three decades ago, when there were only 2 pillars.

When vale arrived at the capital, he had not eaten anything for two whole days, and after arriving, he simply wandered the streets of the capital, looking at the somewhat empty streets with a blank expression.

That was until he was approached by alan. who, turns out, was a bearer rank awakened, and thus, had a requiem.

Speaking of alan, he said that he was actually really suprised when he realized that vale was a awakened, which was expected as teenager as young as 14 awakening is extremely rare.

Back on the topic of Requiem. Requiem unlike what most people think, aren't simply an ability, they are instead the base for abilities and as an bearer, the requiem you unlock is often times very broad like 'fire' or 'mind' instead of things like 'fire manifestation' or 'mind control'.

Anyway, alan's requiem was related to understanding people, or getting 'insight' as he liked to call it.

So alan basically offered him a part time job at the extermination force. Simply because he was a awakened.

Because well, even though there were about 6 million awakened in the world, they only made up a little more than 0.34 percent of the world's population.

Also, if it weren't for the fact that ordinary people can't enter a dungeon, he wouldn't have been given a job this quickly.

The extermination was something that took place once every month where a group of awakened go inside the dungeon and eliminate the eternals at the edges.

It was done so that the eternals don't exit the dungeon and cause ruckus in the outside world.

The extermination lasted a week where the force would have to stay inside the dungeon and eliminate any eternal of grain or husk rank, any eternal above that rank roaming near the boundary would have to be reported to the government so that a higher ranked awakened can eliminate.

So the extermination force not only served as a cleaner but also a scout force.

The pay was also very good with 2 solve and 20 copper coins every month.

Though he was currently only working as a part time employee. Alan had said that he go and get some experience of what it was like to be part of the extermination force before deciding on wheather to sign a contract with him and work as a full time employee.

Which vale happily took as not only the pay was good but it was also the only way he currently has of making money.

And so, here he was.

Click!

Vale tapped the sheath at his side twice, as if to check that it was in place and then looked at the door.

He had tied the sword to his side and the twin shortswords to the backside of his waist.

He straightened his back before walking through the door, he looked around the balcony for alan before realising he was probably outside, so he descended the stairs and exited the tavern/lodge.

Outside, alan was taking to a brown haired man with a thick moustache, when alan saw him, he smiled and then gestured for him to get closer.

Vale jogged towards alan and they started walking to the north.

He could make the image of the dungeon from its silhouette in the distance, thought it was pretty far away, the only thing it would actually take was time, not would'nt take much effort for both of them to walk that much.

He looked around the Streets, seeing a lot of gazes coming their way, it wasn't hard to notice they were awakened.

Though it was just that, people noticed they were awakened and then went on with their life, after all, awakened were regularly deployed in this part of the capital due to the dungeon.

Waking on the stone road, vale's eyes involuntarily drifted towards a store with cakes, pastries and other sweets of display beyond the glass.

Following his gaze, alan also looked at the store, then smiled.

A minute of two later, vale was eating a chocolate pastry with two cherries on top.

'its so sweet~'
