The warning went off just as Maya finished cutting a wire in the Shadow Lord's base. Dex, her teammate, was concerned about the noise, but Maya told him she had followed the plan. Their goal was to disable the magical defenses for a larger army attack, but things had already gone wrong. Zara, another teammate, claimed that all exits were blocked by guards. Maya felt pressure, recalling her father's warning about her age and experience for this dangerous task. She had insisted on volunteering because she was small enough to handle the ventilation system and skilled at disabling defenses.
