Chapter 27 - A Deadly Choice: Save Her or Stay Hidden

Here's a revised, polished, and enhanced version of your passage. I've cor

Alex didn't jump down instantly. He wanted to—but he controlled himself.

Because something was chasing their goddess... ahem, the girl.

Rina, who was watching from above, covered her mouth with a gasp. Her voice trembled as she whispered, "Selene..." Without hesitation, she began untying the rope tied around her waist, ready to climb down.

Alex grabbed her wrist and shook his head. "No," he mouthed, then pointed toward the ground.

A monster slithered through the underbrush. Its eyes glowed a sickly green, with a vertical abyss-like slit at the center. Its scaled body was over four meters long and a meter thick, sliding across the forest floor like a nightmare brought to life. It was chasing Selene.

Selene's thoughts raced, each one more desperate than the last: I can't walk anymore. I'm already poisoned. If I keep running, it'll spread through my body. I froze the area near my thigh to slow it down, but... it's still spreading.

I have only one option—kill the monster and then deal with the poison.

She turned and conjured two sharp ice spikes, hurling them with all her strength.

The creature flinched—barely. They only left faint scratches on its obsidian-scaled skin.

Fear flooded Alex's and Rina's faces.

"This... this can't be..." Rina muttered, her eyes wide in disbelief. "That's a B-rank monster."

Alex's thoughts spiraled. B-rank. Thick skin. Poisonous. Strong bite. No apparent weakness. Only chance... instant kill. I can't risk anyone finding out. If they do... I'll die a gruesome death.

Should I let her die... or save her?

Selene Frostreign, the heir of the Ice Phoenix Clan—the Ice Phoenix Princess—was reaching her limit. She felt powerless. Her ice attacks couldn't even pierce the monster's hide. Her breaths came in ragged gasps, her limbs shaking, eyes glistening with tears of despair. The monsters here... they're not normal...

But still, she fought. She refused to surrender.

Yet the monster seemed to be enjoying itself—like a predator toying with prey.

Meanwhile, inside Alex's head, two tiny versions of himself—white and black—argued fiercely. Finally, they both said in unison:

"Save her."

Decision made.

Alex summoned two shadow daggers and began infusing them with dark elemental poison—concentrating all he had. He made hand signs to Rina: Stay here. Don't move.

Rina nodded solemnly. She trusted Alex. She knew she was no match for that monster and would only get in the way.

Below, Selene collapsed against a tree trunk. Her breaths came shallow. Her legs were trembling. She had fought with everything she had, yet the monster barely bled. Her gaze dimmed.

The snake hissed.

It slithered forward, opening its massive maw. Rows of venom-stained fangs glistened under the moonlight, ready to bite down.

Selene closed her eyes. "Mom… Dad… I'm sorry. I couldn't make you proud…"

Alex was waiting for this moment . He leapt.

Rina closed her eyes too, tears sliding down her cheeks.

Alex landed on the monster's head mid-lunge, plunging both daggers into its glowing eyes. The beast let out a deafening, bone-shaking screech, thrashing wildly. Alex clung to his weapons, refusing to let go as blood and venom sprayed around him.

For a full minute, the snake rampaged, until—finally—it collapsed.

Silence.

Alex stood atop its motionless body, covered in gashes and blood, his breath ragged. Only scraps of his clothing clung to his lower body, his upper half bloodied and bruised.

Rina and Selene, still reeling from shock, stared at the unbelievable sight: a boy, barely older than them, hanging from the head of a monster that should've taken a squad of elites to kill.

Alex climbed down and stumbled toward Selene, who was now barely conscious.

"You okay?" he asked gently.

Selene's lips parted, her voice faint, confused. "You… you're that bumpkin?"

Alex flinched internally. That hurts...

"Yes, I am," he said, and without hesitation, began examining her condition.

Selene, still dazed, gasped and backed up slightly. "W-What are you doing?!"

Alex blinked. "Checking if you're seriously injured."

Rina slid down from the tree and sighed. "Relax, Selene. He's trying to help. Right, Alex?"

"Isn't it obvious?" he replied, confused.

"NO, IT ISN'T!" both girls yelled at once.

Alex tilted his head. "Oh… but why not?"

Rina turned crimson and coughed. "Ahem. Let's treat her first, talk later."

She pointed at Selene's thigh. "She's poisoned. She froze it to slow the spread, but it's still moving." Alex said pointing toward the wound

"Can you treat it?" she asked with worry.

Alex shook his head. "I can heal wounds with my wood element, but I don't know how to extract poison. If I try… I might make it worse. It could kill her."

Selene trembled. That flicker of hope she'd felt began to fade again.

"Is there… no other way?" she asked softly.

Alex went quiet. If I absorb the poison into my own body... I can handle it. But showing that kind of ability… it's dangerous.

"I have a way," Alex said at last. "But only if you both swear never to tell anyone. If you do… I'm as good as dead."

"I promise," Selene said immediately. "Please help me…"

Alex turned to Rina. "You too."

Rina rolled her eyes. "Yeah, yeah. I promise."

Alex took a breath. "I'll suck out the poison with my mouth. My body can take it."

"WHAT?!" both girls shrieked in unison.

"That's the only way," Alex said seriously.

Selene shouted, "What did you just say?!"

"I said—"

Rina shoved her hand over his mouth. "Stop. Just… stop."

Alex blinked. "What? Did I say something wrong?"

Rina and Selene exchanged a glance. Selene's face was a shade of red that defied nature.

Rina sighed and stepped back. "Let's just… get this over with."

Selene's voice trembled. "F-Fine… Do it."

Alex knelt beside her, examining the darkened, icy wound on her thigh. The flesh had turned a sickly black, surrounded by veins of spreading blue.

"You have to stay still," he said firmly. "If I mess up, it'll spread faster."

Selene nodded, barely holding back tears. "Okay…"

Alex gripped her thigh tightly. Selene gasped and clamped a hand over her mouth.

"Sorry. Just a little longer."

He lowered his mouth and began sucking at the wound, careful to control his breath. A shiver ran through Selene's entire body.

The poison fought back, refusing to come out—so Alex channeled his dark elemental energy through his tongue. The darkness latched onto the venom, drawing it out like a siphon.

The process lasted three long, painful minutes.

Finally, Alex staggered back. His skin turned a faint shade of blue...
