Chapter 1 - A Cold Welcoming

Gotham City

July 4, 19:00 EDT

"Hello Gotham this is Summer Gleason and tonight we have the latest on the attack by Mister Freeze at Robinson Park. At this time we turn live to Vicki Vale. Vicki what can you tell us about the attack that took place today" said Summer. "Well Summer as you can see behind me today the residents of Gotham who expected a dream day at the park experienced a nightmare as Mister Freeze went on a chilling rampage. This rampage was put to an end by Gotham's dynamic duo. From the footage obtained by fleeing park goers you can see as Robin and Batman subdued him, but not before the injury of many park goers with some hospitalizations reported. Sending it back to the news desk, this is Vicki Vale reporting" said Vicki. "Thank you Vicki, and our thoughts are out to the Gothamites who went through such a harrowing experience today. This experience, however is not isolated to the residents of Gotham City. We have reports that ice related attacks have happened across the country today conducted by Icicle Jr, Killer Frost, and Captain Cold. All of which were put to a halt by members of the Justice League. But, the question remains. Were these isolated incidents or are they a part of a bigger picture? This is Summer Gleason signing off" said Summer.

As the news channel went to commercial, I started to come out of my stupor and changed the channel from my hospital bed. Now you may be wondering why a Gothamite like myself is shocked at the fact that A. a villain attack just happened , B. that I saw Batman and Robin fighting live, and C. that this apparently happened all over the country and was stopped by Justice League members. Well the truth of the matter is that before I ended up here I wouldn't have been surprised at all and that this would have been a random day of the week minus being in the hospital. But that was before I decided to have a day at Robinson Park, before I was shot in the head with a freeze ray, and before I woke up from a cold sweat in a hospital room with a lifetime's worth of memories.

The day started off well enough for it to become the shit show it turned out to be. I started the day later than usual on the account that it was the weekend and got to enjoy the morning sleeping in. When I stumbled out of bed and into the kitchen my mother was already awake at the kitchen table with her morning tea, reading the newest addition of the Gotham Gazette. "Did you have a nice rest?" she asked as she took another sip. "Peachy" I replied as I went passed her to grab the Cocoa Nuts out of the cabinet. As I went to sit down across from her she poured a cup of tea for me and we enjoyed the relative quiet of our apartment. As we finished up our morning ritual my mother asked what I wanted to do today. "Maybe we can spend the day at Robinson park?" I responded thinking about how rare it was to have a sunny day like today. "That should be fine. Poison Ivy is still in Arkham so there shouldn't be any major issues. We should take the time to enjoy it while she's not around" my mother said. We then prepared for a day at the park and left our apartment. We decided to walk to the park and got their relatively quickly. After spending some time together I asked my mother if I could hang out with a friend from school I saw walking by. "Alright Yun you can go ahead. It's 11:30a.m right now so you can go hang out with him but you need to meet me by 12:00p.m so we can head back home. I'll be by the chess tables ok?" She said. "Sounds good mom, see you in a few" I responded and headed over to meet up with my friend. We haven't had the time to hang out since I transferred to Gotham Academy so we spent our time catching up with each other.

When it was closer to the time to meet up with my mom, my friend and I started to make our way down the path back to our parents. As we separated and I was walking down the path to the area my mom was at I heard the whine of a machine and screams that were abruptly cutoff. My head spun back to see that my friend and his family were encased in ice. At that moment my fight or flight kicked in and I started to sprint to the chess area, hopefully to find my mom and get out of here. I saw her as I approached, her body coiled and eyes narrowed searching for a glimpse of me. As I got closer she seemed to notice me as her body started to relax, however that soon shifted her body tensing and her eyes showing some fear. "YUN MOVE!" She screamed as she ran towards me. I understood her fear as a streak of blue went passed my side, barely missing me. My heart starts to race as I push myself desperately trying to avoid being hit but it seemed inevitable. I heard my mother scream my name again urging me to hurry. Curiosity got the best of me as I glanced back only to see a streak of blue light up my world.

When I came to I wasn't in a hospital bed nor did I wake up to the surroundings of the park. Instead I was greeted by a vast darkness that threatened to swallow me whole. There was a blankness to this space that seemed to be devoid of light and sound. My first thought as I got a hold of myself was " did I really die?" I started to slowly spiral as I awaited whatever would happen when I started to feel the beginnings of a headache. I was confused at first but soon felt some hope as I could actually feel something. It gave me hope that I wasn't dead but in some sort of limbo. This headache though steadily progressed into a splitting pain. If I could have I would have already fallen to the floor, clutching my head and wishing to pass out. Instead I had to endure this pain until my head felt like it was about to burst. When the pain hit its peak I felt like screaming as something seemed to flood forward. That's when the pain finallly stopped and I started to feel something else. I started to feel bursts of emotions that I couldn't have named before. Grief, longing, agony, melancholy, remorse, rapture and so much more ran through me simultaneously. Each emotion tied to a memory that I haven't made yet. At the end of this wave I felt like a completely different person. I wasn't just Yun Matthew a thirteen year old gothamite, I was also someone who lived to his life in a universe where my whole world was a tv show.
