Inside, Shen Li lay curled under the thick white duvet, her eyes closed, though her breathing was even, calm, and almost peaceful.
Hearing the door creak open, she fluttered her eyelashes open and peeked up at them, tears immediately gathering at the corners of her eyes.
"Dad… Mom…" she whispered weakly, "You are back… what did he say…?"
Mrs Shen hurried forward to sit by her side, taking her daughter's cold hand into hers soothing and warming it, "Don't worry about anything, Li'er. Just get enough rest, we are right here with you. Your place in this family will never be taken away and never change!"
Shen Li closed her eyes again, a faint satisfied smile curling at the edges of her lips as she squeezed her mother's hand lightly.
That's right. I will never be replaced. No matter who he mourns… I am the one here now. I'm the one present in their lives.
