Chapter 319 - Chapter 319: Gym Challenge with No Level Restriction!

At the entrance of Oreburgh Gym.

Platinum and Axel were waiting to the side of the main gate.

Both of them were a little bored. Platinum lightly used the tip of her tall boot to kick at the stones by the roadside.

Axel, on the other hand, kept glancing at the time displayed on Rotom, calculating how much time he could afford to waste beating up Byron.

From ten minutes at first, it turned into four minutes, and then it turned into three.

The Pokémon Axel planned to use to beat Byron went from Gyarados down to Pheromosa.

If Byron still didn't show up, then Axel could only switch to the faster-in-battle Mewtwo or Mega Rayquaza.

Only by seizing every second could he finish Platinum's request in the fastest possible time, leaving himself plenty of time to deal with Cynthia and the disaster that was about to hit the entire Sinnoh region.

Just as the two of them were getting bored waiting, a man wearing leather boots and a tank top, his muscles sharp and well-defined, appeared behind them.

"Hello there, are you two today's challengers?", Byron jumped down from Onix, smiling as he greeted the two of them, while secretly sighing at Axel.

'Didn't expect this, brother. You actually came with your girlfriend to challenge the Gym.'

'Looks like you're confident enough to pass my trial, so you wanted to show off here, huh?'

'Too bad…'

'I'm way too busy today, so I'll just have to make you suffer a quick KO.'

Axel also smiled as he looked at Byron, the corner of his eye catching the Rotom.

'Oreburgh Gym's Byron?'

Axel had some impression of this man. Though he was the first Gym Leader in Sinnoh, like Brock, he specialized in Rock-type Pokémon such as Onix and Geodude.

But in terms of fighting strength, the two couldn't even be compared.

If you judged by level, Byron's real fighting power might be second only to "Denji," known as the strongest Gym Leader in Sinnoh.

'Unfortunately… This guy wasted too much time on the way.'

If Axel had followed his original plan, using Gyarados and Dragonair to challenge this Gym Leader, maybe they could've had a back-and-forth match.

But now, there were only two minutes left before the time Axel had set in his heart.

The Pokémon he planned to send out had shifted to Glastrier + Archaludon.

Thankfully, the other side looked like a tough guy. Hopefully, he wouldn't get knocked into despair too quickly.

Since both were in a hurry, they quickly took their places on opposite sides of the arena.

Byron didn't waste time with chatter and immediately announced the rules of the battle.

"This match is a 2v2 battle. My main types are Rock and Ground."

"As Gym Leader, I won't switch out Pokémon halfway at will."

"Once both Pokémon are defeated, I lose. Any questions from the challenger?"

Axel shook his head with a smile, his impression of Byron improving.

This guy was straightforward. Maybe he could let Glastrier hold back a little later.

"Since you have no questions, then I'll release my Pokémon!"

Things were too busy at Oreburgh Mine today, so Byron wasn't willing to waste even a moment. With a wave of his hand, one of his main force Pokémon, Onix, instantly appeared.

"Oniiix~"

Onix let out a roar, its gaze falling on Axel's side of the arena. It quickly understood the situation.

'Looks like today is another rookie-crushing match?'

Thinking that, Onix's eyes showed a trace of pity, and it held back some of its overflowing aura.

Fighting was thrilling, but scaring a baby Trainer's Pokémon wasn't great…

On Axel's side, Platinum's Pokédex Rotom suddenly let out a sharp sound.

Puzzled, Platinum pulled it out to check why the Pokédex Professor Rowan had just given her was suddenly going off.

The next moment, Platinum froze.

Inside her Pokédex, it clearly showed Onix's energy level, level 48.

'Is Byron the Gym Leader being serious in a battle against a challenger?'

Platinum took a deep breath, her gaze moving between Byron and Axel.

She really did want to test Axel, and she really did want to see if Axel's strength was enough for him to serve as her bodyguard.

But right now, this battle was obviously unfair to Axel.

Gym Leaders were Gym Leaders precisely because their main team was among the strongest in the region.

And now this main Pokémon was aimed at her bodyguard.

Yet she had just made a wager with her bodyguard tied to his pay.

As the Young Miss of the Berlitz family, Platinum couldn't allow herself to make an unfair bet with Axel.

"Axel, today's wager doesn't count."

Platinum looked seriously at Axel and said word by word, "This battle isn't fair to you!"

"Byron the Gym Leader didn't send out a training Pokémon to test you, but his Gym Leader-class main force Pokémon."

"Although using training Pokémon for challenges is just an unwritten rule, I can't take advantage of you."

Hearing Platinum's words, Byron instinctively glanced in her direction.

And the moment he saw the Pokédex Rotom in her hand, a black line appeared on his forehead.

'Wait, why the hell is there a challenger with a Pokédex?'

'And it just has to be the kind that can check Pokémon levels, the worst kind of Pokédex!'

Right now he could practically see Officer Jenny standing before him, scolding him harshly.

'I was just taking it easy a little, why'd you have to catch me in the act!'

Platinum was right. Using training Pokémon wasn't a written Alliance rule.

But it was an unwritten rule that practically every Gym Leader in the world abided by.

If word of this spread, Officer Jenny would definitely get ridiculed by Officer Jennys from other regions.

Thinking of Officer Jenny's usual tough personality, Byron suddenly felt life turn dark.

He had only wanted to save a bit of time, but now it seemed he'd have to spend even more time reporting to Officer Jenny.

"Um…", Byron was just about to explain, when Axel's voice suddenly cut him off.

"There's nothing unfair about it."

"Didn't the rules just say it's a 2v2 battle? They never mentioned any level restrictions."

"That means, as long as it's two Pokémon, no matter the level, it's fine, right?"

Byron didn't reply, he just nodded like crazy.

'Brother, there aren't many people like you anymore.'

'After this battle, I've gotta give you ten Ground Gems to soothe your wounded heart.'

Onix also blinked, its aura becoming even gentler.

Honestly, it had been a long time since it met such an easygoing Trainer.

Seeing Byron and Onix both acknowledge that "any level Pokémon could be used," Axel smiled and pulled out a Poké Ball.

From that Poké Ball came faint specks of ice crystals.

"It's decided then, go, Glastrier!"
