Chapter 8 - Back at the guild

As the villagers gathered around Wayne, thanking him and congratulating him on his victory, one of the villagers, an elderly woman named Elara, began to recount the battle to those who had missed it.

"I was hiding in my home, praying to the gods that the Wyrmkin would pass us by," Elara said, her voice shaking with emotion. "But then I heard the sound of clashing steel, and the roar of the beast. I peeked out the window, and I saw Wayne, standing tall against the monster. He was like a god of war, his sword flashing in the moonlight."

The villagers listened with rapt attention, their eyes wide with wonder. "What happened next?" one of them asked, leaning forward.

Elara continued, "The Wyrmkin charged at Wayne, its claws swiping through the air. But Wayne dodged and weaved, avoiding its attacks with ease. He struck back with his sword, but the creature seemed to absorb the blows. I thought for sure that Wayne would fall, that the Wyrmkin would kill him."

The villagers nodded, their faces filled with concern. "But then," Elara said, a smile spreading across her face, "Wayne did something amazing. He poured holy water onto his sword, and it glowed with a soft, white light. The Wyrmkin recoiled, its scales smoking and charred from the blade. Wayne pressed his advantage, striking again and again, each blow landing with precision and force."

The villagers cheered, their voices rising in excitement. "And then?" they asked, eager to hear the rest of the story.

Elara's eyes shone with tears. "And then, with one final blow, Wayne struck the Wyrmkin's head from its shoulders. The creature's body crashed to the ground, and we knew we were finally safe. We've been living in fear for so long, but thanks to Wayne, we can finally live in peace."

The villagers applauded, their faces filled with gratitude. Wayne stood among them, his face flushed with modesty, but a small smile playing on his lips. He knew that he had done something good, something that would be remembered for a long time to come.

As the villagers continued to celebrate, Wayne slipped away, his thoughts turning to the next challenge that lay ahead. He knew that there would be more battles to fight, more monsters to slay. But for now, he was content to bask in the praise of the villagers, and to know that he had made a difference in their lives. As the night wore on, the villagers continued to celebrate Wayne's victory. They sang and danced, their music and laughter carrying far into the night. Wayne joined in, feeling a sense of belonging and camaraderie with the people he had just met.

As the celebration reached its peak, the village elder approached Wayne, a serious look on his face. "Wayne, we cannot thank you enough for what you have done for us," he said, his voice filled with emotion. "You have saved our village from certain destruction, and we will never forget it."

Wayne smiled, feeling a sense of pride and satisfaction. "It was my pleasure," he said. "I'm just glad I could help."

The elder nodded, his eyes shining with gratitude. "We would like to show our appreciation in a more tangible way," he said. "We would like to offer you a place in our village, as a honored guest and a friend."

Wayne was taken aback by the offer. He had not expected such generosity from the villagers. "Thank you," he said, feeling a sense of warmth and appreciation. "I would be honored to accept your offer."

The villagers cheered, their faces filled with joy and approval. Wayne smiled, feeling a sense of belonging and connection with these people. He knew that he would never forget this moment, this feeling of being accepted and appreciated by others.

Wayne walked back to the city guard's headquarters, feeling a sense of accomplishment and pride. He had completed the quest and defeated the Wyrmkin, and he was eager to report back to the Stormbringers' Guild.

As he entered the guild's quarters, Ryker looked up from his desk, a hint of surprise on his face. "Wayne, you're back," he said, his voice neutral. "I didn't expect you to return so soon."

Wayne smiled, feeling a sense of satisfaction. "I've completed the quest," he said, pulling out the Wyrmkin's claw from his pack. "Here's proof of the creature's demise."

Ryker's expression changed from surprise to admiration as he took the claw from Wayne. "Well done," he said, his voice filled with respect. "You've proven yourself to be a capable and skilled warrior. The guild will be pleased with your work."

Wayne nodded, feeling a sense of pride. "I'm glad I could complete the quest," he said. "What's next? Do you have any other quests for me?"

Ryker smiled, a hint of excitement in his eyes. "Actually, we do," he said. "We've received reports of a powerful artifact hidden deep within a nearby ruin. We're looking for someone to retrieve it for us."

Wayne's eyes lit up with interest. "Tell me more," he said, leaning forward.

Ryker leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful expression on his face. "The artifact is said to be a powerful magical crystal, capable of granting immense power to its wielder. However, the ruin is said to be cursed, and many have attempted to retrieve the crystal before but never returned."

Wayne nodded, his mind racing with possibilities. "I'm interested," he said. "I'll take the quest."

Ryker smiled, a hint of approval in his eyes. "I thought you would," he said. "Let's discuss the details."

And with that, Wayne embarked on a new adventure, one that would take him into the heart of danger and uncertainty. But he was ready, armed with his skills, his determination, and his unwavering courage.
