Chapter 9: The Wraithborn Ascend
The sky above Arcforge was no longer blue.
Veins of black lightning split the clouds, and the sun itself seemed dimmer. Across the academy's fractured towers, alarms wailed, and barrier wards flickered under the growing pressure of aetheric storms.
It had begun.
---
Breach of the Spire
Kael and Zaira sprinted down a spiraling corridor of the Vault Initiative's high tower. Idran's voice crackled over comms.
"They've breached the Spire. Repeat: the Choir is inside!"
The Eclipsed Choir had launched their assault without warning, detonating mana bombs beneath the east platform, sending half of Arcforge's ancient laboratories crashing to the sea far below.
Kael activated Valkryss mid-run. The mech shimmered into being, plates unfolding like wings. He leapt into the cockpit just as the eastern platform erupted into flame.
Zaira summoned Astralara, her spellcore singing as she synced with the mech's radiant matrix.
They launched.
The sky filled with chaos.
Corrupted Spellmechs rained down from obsidian airships, their joints screeching with corrupted magic. Choir operatives in silver-black armor blinked in and out of shadow.
But Kael's alliance met them with steel and fire.

Rina Returns
In the heart of the battle, Kael landed hard against a fallen tower.
A shape stepped from the smoke.
Rina.
Clad in sleek, black armor etched with crimson glyphs.
"You shouldn't have protected her," she said coldly.
Kael stood slowly, Valkryss growling with energy.
"You left us."
"I chose the future. One where we survive."
Her mech, Nightshard, rose behind her, sleek and serpent-like, coiled with Wraithborn resonance.
They clashed.
Lightning split the sky as blade met blade. Kael fought not to kill, but to reach her.
Rina fought to prove she was right.
Their battle tore through the ruins of Arcforge's great library, ancient tomes and runes dissolving under the fury of their duel.

Lyra's Choice
Meanwhile, in the heart of the Vault, Lyra stood before the Wraithcore's fractured pedestal.
Visions flooded her mind.
Of Titans long dead.
Of her creation.
Of her purpose.
"I was made to end things," she whispered.
But Kael's voice echoed in her memory:
"You're not a weapon. You're a person."
Zaira arrived, breathless and bleeding.
"You have to decide, Lyra. Are you what they made you… or what you choose to become?"
Lyra looked to the sky—where a colossal shadow now loomed.
---
Ascendance of the Wraithborn
From the rift above Arcforge descended a Titan.
It had no name.
It was ruin incarnate.
One of the original Wraithborn constructs—a vast, skeletal giant stitched from broken worlds and failed spells. It moved slowly, but each step cracked the sky, each gesture unraveled magic itself.
The city quaked.
Zaira, Kael, and their remaining allies launched.
Mechs old and new, rebel and loyalist, united in desperation.
Even Rina, witnessing the scale of the threat, hesitated.
Kael's voice rang through the shared link.
"This is what they were hiding. What they feared. We end it—together."
Rina finally replied.
"Just this once."
She joined the charge.
---
The Last Stand of Arcforge
Kael and Valkryss led the assault.
They targeted the Titan's core, where unstable Wraithborn energy pulsed like a heart.
Lyra, riding a storm of her own making, confronted the construct—not as a weapon, but as its sibling.
"You are the past," she declared. "I am the choice."
She tore open a path with her own resonance, weakening the Titan's shell.
Zaira and Astralara pushed through, unleashing the full fury of arcane light.
Idran, from a remote command node, synchronized the Spellmech squads with military precision.
Rina plunged Nightshard into the Titan's spine.
And Kael…
Kael reached the core.
He opened Valkryss to maximum resonance. Pain seared his body, but he pushed forward, channeling every ounce of will and purpose.
"For Arcforge!"
He plunged Valkryss' blade into the heart.
Light consumed everything.
---
Aftermath
The Titan fell.
Arcforge's sky cleared.
The rift closed.
But the price was heavy.
Parts of the city were gone. Dozens dead. The academy's council scattered or imprisoned.
The Summit Alliance stood battered but victorious.
Kael emerged from Valkryss barely conscious. Zaira reached him first.
"We made it," she said.
"For now," Kael replied.

Epilogue: Rising From Ash
Weeks later, rebuilding began.
Lyra, still unsure of her place, chose to leave Arcforge to explore the world she once helped destroy.
Rina stayed behind, quietly helping with reconstruction.
Kael and Zaira walked through the repaired courtyard where new cadets arrived—young, eager, unscarred.
Arcforge Academy had changed.
It was no longer just a school.
It was a symbol.
A promise.
And Kael, its reluctant hero, knew the future would never be easy.
But it was theirs to fight for.
