Chapter 35 - chapter 35-Will you make me your mate?????

Tears streamed down her face, silent and scalding. She had heard it all. The pain, the fear, the selfless love, the crushing despair. And now, the question that hammered in her mind was not what was happening to Raven, but what would she do? Could she stand by and watch him fade, watch him turn into the horrifying skeleton he so desperately feared becoming? Could she bear to lose him, knowing there might be a way, a path she could take, even if it meant… even if it meant becoming his mate, bound for eternity?

She remained hidden in the shadows, her heart a battlefield of love, fear, and a fierce, burning resolve. Raven was dying, and Shu knew, with a chilling certainty, that she would do anything to save him. Anything at all.

Shu stood there, tears blurring her vision, the weight of Raven's words crushing her. The depth of his sacrifice, his love for her and Roxy, was overwhelming. The pain in his voice when he spoke of her happiness with another man… it was a pain she felt mirrored in her own heart. She wanted to scream, to run to him and hold him, but she knew that would only worsen things. He was protecting her, even from the supposed freedom of moving on without him.

She had to act. She couldn't let him wither away, choosing a slow, agonizing demise over the possibility of extending his life, even if it meant… becoming his mate. The thought sent a shiver down her spine. Four years. Four years of unspoken distance, built on a guilt he carried alone. She remembered that night, the night he referred to, with a clarity that stung. She hadn't understood then, only felt violated and confused. Now, understanding dawned, and with it, a fierce determination.

She slipped back into the house, unnoticed, and went straight to Roxy's room. Her daughter was engrossed in a drawing, a vibrant depiction of their family, Raven as a towering hero, Shu as a graceful warrior, and Roxy as a mischievous fairy flitting between them. The innocent joy in Roxy's creation solidified Shu's resolve.

"Roxy, sweetie," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "Mommy needs you to be a brave girl."

She explained, in age-appropriate terms, that Daddy wasn't feeling well, and that Mommy needed to help him. She left out the more frightening details, focusing on the need for love and support. Roxy, sensing the urgency in her mother's voice, nodded solemnly, her big eyes filled with concern.

That night, Shu waited until everyone was asleep. She found Raven sitting by the window, staring out at the moonlit garden. He looked weary, his shoulders slumped.

"Raven," she said softly, approaching him.

He started, a flicker of surprise crossing his face. "Shu? What are you doing up?" He tried to keep his tone casual, but she heard the underlying anxiety.

She reached out and took his hand, her touch sending a jolt through him. He tensed, pulling back slightly.

"Don't," she said, her voice firm but gentle. "Please, don't push me away anymore."

He looked at her, his eyes filled with a mixture of confusion and pain. "Shu, I…"

"I heard everything," she interrupted, her voice barely a whisper. "I heard you and Jihu talking."

The color drained from his face. He tried to pull his hand away again, but she held on tight.

"Don't," she repeated, her voice stronger this time. "Don't you dare shut me out again. You're carrying this burden alone, and it's killing you. It's killing us both."

Tears welled up in her eyes, and she let them fall freely. "You think I don't love you? You think I would let you suffer like this, just so I can avoid… whatever it is you think I'm avoiding?"

"Shu, you don't understand," he said, his voice hoarse. "I don't want to take anything from you. I don't want to… to change you."

"You're not taking anything," she insisted, her grip tightening on his hand. "You're giving me the chance to save you. You're giving me the chance to be the wife I should have been, the partner you deserve."

She stepped closer, her eyes searching his. "And as for changing me… Raven, I've already changed. I've grown. I understand now. What happened four years ago… it was a misunderstanding. A burden you needlessly carried. Please, let me help you. Let me be your mate."

The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken emotions. Raven stared at her, his face etched with disbelief and a flicker of hope. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Shu reached up and gently cupped his face in her hands. "I love you, Raven. More than anything. And I will do whatever it takes to keep you with us."

She leaned in and kissed him, a slow, tender kiss that conveyed all the love and regret she had held back for so long. He kissed her back, his grip tightening on her hand, his body trembling with emotion.

The kiss deepened, a silent promise of shared pain, unwavering love, and a future they would face together, hand in hand. And as their lips met, Shu knew she was ready. Ready to confront the darkness, ready to embrace the change, ready to fight for the man she loved, even if it meant sharing her life force, becoming his mate, and facing the unknown together. The path ahead would be fraught with challenges, but they would face them together, as a family, bound by love and an unbreakable bond. And, she finally understood, that was all that truly mattered.

For a long, lingering moment, only the soft sounds of their breathing and the distant rustling of leaves in the garden filled the silence. When they finally broke apart, Raven's eyes, no longer shadowed with despair, were filled with a profound tenderness Shu hadn't seen in years. Tears still glistened on her cheeks, but her gaze was steady, unwavering.

"Shu…" Raven's voice was thick with emotion, a rough whisper that seemed to emerge from deep within him. He traced the line of her jaw with a trembling finger, his touch feather-light yet charged with an intensity that made her heart race. "Do you… do you truly understand what you're saying?"

Shu nodded, her gaze locked with his. "I do, Raven. I understand that you are the man I love. Vampire or not, changed or unchanged, you. And I understand that you need me, just as much as I need you. We are mates, Raven. Soulmates. Destined to be together, to face everything life, and perhaps even unlife, throws at us, together."

He closed his eyes briefly, a single tear escaping and tracing a path down his own cheek. "It's… it's dangerous, Shu. More than you can imagine. Being bound to me in this way… it will change you. It will expose you to things you… you shouldn't have to face." His voice was laced with a deep-seated guilt, a burden he seemed unable to shake off completely.

Shu smiled, a small, gentle curve of her lips that held immense strength. "Danger has never scared me away from something I truly want, Raven. And you… you are everything I want. Everything I cherish. And as for change…" she paused, her thumb gently brushing away his tear, "I've lived without the full you for so long, Raven. That was a change I never wanted, never asked for. This… this is a change I embrace. A change that brings you back to me, back to us."

She took his hand again, pressing it against her chest, over her heart. "Feel this, Raven? This is yours. It beats for you. It always has. And it will continue to, no matter what we face."

He looked down at their joined hands, his gaze softening. He could feel the warmth of her skin, the steady rhythm of her heart. It was a tangible connection, a lifeline in the swirling darkness that had threatened to consume him. He raised her hand to his lips, pressing a tender kiss to her knuckles.

"And Roxy…" Shu continued, her voice softening further as she spoke their daughter's name. "She needs you, Raven. She adores you. She felt your absence, even if she couldn't understand it. Don't you see? We are a family. You, me, Roxy. We belong together. Leaving us again… that would break her heart, and mine."

The mention of Roxy seemed to solidify his resolve. He looked up at Shu, his eyes now clear, filled with a newfound determination. The weariness was still there, etched into the lines around his eyes, but it was now tempered with a glimmer of hope, of strength drawn from her unwavering belief in him.

"You're right," he said, his voice gaining strength. "You're absolutely right. I've been a fool, letting my fear… my self-pity… blind me to what truly matters. I have you. I have Roxy. I have… everything."

He stood up, pulling Shu up with him. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her close, pressing his face into her hair. This embrace was different from the hesitant, strained ones of the past few weeks. This was full of warmth, security, and a deep, abiding love.

"I love you, Shu," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "More than words can ever say. And I will never, ever shut you out again. We will face this together. Everything."

Shu held him tight, burying her face in his chest. The tension that had been coiled within her for weeks began to unravel, replaced by a sense of profound relief and a burgeoning hope for their future. She felt the strength in his arms around her, the renewed energy radiating from him. The darkness might still linger at the edges, but tonight, in the moonlit garden, surrounded by the quiet promise of their love, they had found a light, a beacon that would guide them through whatever lay ahead.

"Together," Shu whispered back, pulling back slightly to look into his eyes. "Always together."

He leaned down and kissed her again, a kiss that was both a promise and a beginning. A beginning of a new chapter, a chapter where they faced the darkness not in fear, but in unity, their love a shield against the unknown, their family bond an unbreakable anchor in the storm. The night was still young, and the future uncertain, but in each other's arms, they found the strength to face it all, hand in hand, as mates, as partners, as a family, forever bound by a love that defied even the shadows of the night.
