The fire roared behind them, sealing the narrow pass and trapping the Voidborn on the other side — for now. Elara and Kael didn't slow until the mountain's shadow gave way to the high plains. The Moonstone throbbed faintly in her palm, as if sensing what was to come.
"We need to warn the others," Elara said breathlessly. "The Voidborn are on the move. Vael must be using them to find us."
Kael nodded grimly. "The moment he feels the Moonstone is in play, he'll make his move."
They traveled swiftly, reaching the outer edge of Moonveil territory by nightfall. The crescent moon hung overhead, pale and watchful. But something felt off. The air was too still. No guards at the ridge. No patrol scents.
Kael's brow furrowed. "This isn't right. They should've met us by now."
A sharp whistle cut through the air — a signal.
From the treeline, a figure stepped out. It was Dareth — one of Kael's former lieutenants. His cloak bore the Alpha mark, but his posture was rigid, his eyes unreadable.
"Elara. Kael." Dareth gave a stiff nod. "You've returned."
Kael eyed him carefully. "Where's the patrol? Where's Ravynn?"
Dareth's gaze flickered. "She's… occupied. There's been a shift in leadership while you were away."
Elara stepped forward, sensing the tension in the air. "What do you mean?"
Before Dareth could answer, a dozen wolves emerged behind him — all armed. Elara's stomach dropped.
"You didn't think Vael would sit idle while you chased relics?" Dareth said, his tone darkening. "He promised protection. A future. Power. Your rule is over, Kael."
Kael's eyes turned gold, the wolf rising beneath his skin. "You betrayed your pack."
"No," Dareth replied coldly. "I chose survival."
Elara's flames sparked at her fingertips. "You chose fear."
The Moonstone glowed brighter in her grasp. She could feel its heat coursing into her — answering her fury.
"This isn't over," Kael growled. "Not by a long shot."
Dareth smirked. "Then fight. But know this — by the next moonrise, Moonveil will belong to Vael."
The trap had been sprung.
And war was now knocking at their doorstep.
