Michael was well aware of the situation around the stronghold and its firepower deployment. In the past, there had been three attempts to destroy the Wild Alliance Headquarters, but all ended in failure, with massive casualties of Warriors, naturally leading to a better understanding of the stronghold's situation.
If they were to attack along the two roads in front and behind the stronghold, the firepower there was too strong, so treading on the grass over the mines was a better choice.
The Warriors at the forefront of the attack were nothing but cannon fodder, used to clear the mines and waste the bullets from inside the stronghold. The real power to destroy the stronghold lay in the Death Warriors and the child soldiers.
