From the corridor at the top floor of Hai Fan City Hospital, looking out, every ward was empty, except for the one at the end of the corridor, which was still lit.
A young girl sat on the hospital bed.
Her forehead was covered with black bangs, and a fiery red long braid was tied at the back of her head. In front of her was an open folding table, with a birthday cake, plastic forks and spoons, knives, and plastic plates for slicing the cake.
A wooden chair stood by the bedside.
Someone was sitting on the wooden chair too; he wore a Zhongshan suit, had slicked-back hair, and was looking down, one arm hugging his shoulder while the other played with a phone.
The hospital room was silent. An old-fashioned television was broadcasting the morning news of Hai Fan City:
"The government has issued an orange typhoon warning, and the 12th-grade typhoon 'Big Windmill' is about to hit. Residents of Hai Fan City are advised to avoid going out today and lock their doors and windows..."
