Chapter 7 - Humans?

After sleeping for 2 hours, Dimitri was woken up by a knock on his door.

"Go away!" He yelled and turned away from the door.

"If you don't wake up now, you're not getting any food." Devon's harsh voice sounded causing Dimitri to remember what happened the previous day.

"So I wasn't dreaming." he muttered softly before calling out that he would be there after a minute.

A few minutes later, as Dimitri was walking out, he stopped abruptly, his breath faltering.

"Wow!" he let out an unintentional word of admiration.

"Huh, what did you say?" Charlotte, who was standing a few meters away, turned to face him and asked.

"Cough... cough, no it's nothing." Dimitri said as he walked past her, to Devon.

'I was a bit preoccupied before and only knew she was beautiful but I guess I was sorely mistaken.'

Since Dimitri was walking to Devon, he didn't notice the small smile creeping on Charlotte's face.

'This might just be easier than I thought.'

"Looks like someone just forgot how to breathe." Devon said in a voice so soft only Dimitri could hear.

"Shut up. Where's the food."

"Here, eat up. There is enough to last a week, however I don't think it's going to last longer than 3 days before it rots." Devon said as he passed a plate made of wood, full of meat to Dimitri.

"Thought as much, however, I can always just go out again to hunt some more animals." Dimitri took the plate and manifested a chair for himself, made out of his dark element.

"Can't you just be normal for once?" Devon asked with a sigh.

"Huh? What did I do wrong this time?" Dimitri puzzledly asked.

"No, nothing." Devon sighed. 'The fact that you don't even know, makes this even weirder.'

Back in the human country, a party consisting of three people made their way to the demon country to complete a subjugation quest.

"Captain, are you sure we should be here? I heard some of the demons are really scary and I don't want to be demon food." The only girl of the party asked, looking about 19 years old.

"Don't worry Nestia, everything's going to be okay. Just remember that our captain is an S-rank adventurer, he can kill almost everything." A boy, looking about the same age as Nestia said.

"Yeah, you're right Aaron."

After walking in the forest for a few more hours, they finally entered a plain, successfully entering the demon country.

"Remember, we're here to slay a few demons to clear the border and make it a bit safer for us humans. Now, the most important thing to remember is that demons look malformed and beastly. Our targets today, the lowest ranked demons, which usually are common at the border have animal characteristics. If you happen to see demons that look like humans, just pray and hope they don't see you." The captain reminded as he looked at his two party members.

"Why would we do that when you're here Captain?" The boy, clearly idolizing him, asked.

"Because not even I could kill them, only Orichalcum ranked adventurers can match them in a one-on-one fight and even then, victory is not guaranteed. We can only hope that the hero party grows quickly."

"If they're that strong, why are we still able to stand against demons?" The girl asked.

"Because they never fight together. There are about as many as there are Orichalcum adventurers, but we form party's while they're too prideful to fight with others." The captain continued explaining.

"Makes sense, but what if they do team up?" They continued asking.

"If that were to ever happen, then whoever they fight, are pretty much guaranteed to die." The captain explained patiently. " Okay, let's get moving, the chance of running into a demon like that is almost non-existent, since they're all high-ranking demons and would only leave the demon capital under special circumstances."

The party started killing small demons, such as demonic boars, -rabbits and -wolves.

"Good job everyone." The captain said after they killed another demon wolf pack.

"Yeah, but I'm exhausted."

"Let's go to that clearing, we'll be able to stay safe from ambushes during the night." The captain said and stood up.

"Okay."

After a while, they build a small fire and got ready to go to sleep.

"Okay, I'll watch guard first and you two --" As he was explaining he heard a voice behind him.

"Humans? What are they doing here?"
