Chapter 2 - DeathSense

Rule No 1 of DEATHSENSE :=>

(The Deathsense activates randomly during sleep.)

The user will dream of their own death with full sensory details: exact time, place, cause, and condition, along with a timer of days remaining on a holographic screen only visible to the user during their conscious state.

DeathSense.

It's more like a precognition ability I have, to sense my own death before it's commencement.

So here comes rules 2 and 3.

2. Only one death prediction can exist at a time.

Until the current prediction is fulfilled or a condition changes it, the Deathsense will not show a new death.

3. The death shown is 100% accurate based on the present timeline.

If the user takes actions to avoid it, the death can be postponed or altered—triggering a new vision.

In other words, I have to take action to prevent being in that situation to avoid death.

However, it's not that simple.

You might ask, if I know the exact location, time and cause of my death, then why don't I just avoid going to that place at that time.

In that sense, everything would be resolved swiftly.

However, this damned power of DeathSense doesn't allow that, due to the 4th rule.

4. Unless and until the cause of death is resolved, death of the user is inevitable at the predetermined time and location.

This implies that I have to do something about the cause of my death this time, to avoid it.

Well I have done it a few times already, so I have got the hang of it.

But, this time, the time remaining is really short.

648 hours 35 minutes 29 seconds.

27 days to be precise.

Also, the thing that has been bothering me is the fact that the cause the of my death this time is....

A stab in the abdomen.

This implies murder.

Someone wants me dead.

And this DeathSense isn't generous enough to give me the identity of this person.

So, for this time, I have to find out their identity and prevent my death.

Keeping that fact aside, it was really strange for my past and reason behind my expulsion to be out in the open like that day, from the first day itself.

I mean, identities of the people involved in that case was never disclosed in public.

So, who the hell did spread these rumors.

And I have to think of how to deal with my classmates too.

"This is really exhausting."

Those words slipped from my mouth as I was walking, zoned out, along the corridor towards class 1B.

"What is?", someone called me out from behind.

As I turned towards the source of this call, there stood the class representative Arisa Fujiwara of class 1B.

"Um...what?", I feigned ignorance by counter asking a question, with a confused face.

"You said it was exhausting, didn't you?"

"Oh....that....well, you are aware of the situation around me, so I don't think you need an explanation for all of this."

I have seen it in her eyes before.

Among the few traits I have mastered during my loner life, observation is one of them.

I have been observing her for a while during class.

Her appearance might be that of a cheerful leader, who can get along with everyone.

But her actions seem a bit calculated.

"Is that so?", she didn't say much to my almost rude reply too.

Which implies that she has understood my intentions of not getting involved with anyone.

Though, I have to admit that she might just be genuinely worried for me.

"Well then, I have to go the teacher's office. See you later.", she said with a smile on her face and went on her way.

I also returned to the class, thinking of what my next set of actions would be.

***

"Sensei~ I have brought the list you asked me to."

I, Arisa Fujiwara, called out to our homeroom teacher, who was busy typing something on his desktop.

"Ah, Fujiwara, keep it on the desk."

He replied without even looking up.

As I took a look on what he was typing so intensely, it seemed to be a feedback form or something.

"What are you writing, sensei?", I asked him.

"Well, it's not related to your class, so you can rest assured and go. Your next class will start in a few minutes."

"Sensei, you sure are secretive sometimes," I remarked, half-jokingly.

Okabe-sensei just gave me a thin smile, still not breaking eye contact with his screen.

"There are things better left unknown, Fujiwara," he replied, his tone unusually somber.

I raised an eyebrow but decided not to press further.

But... let's stir things up for a bit.

"Um, sensei, there is something else too I wanted to report."

"Mm? What is it?"

"Apparently there is a rumor going around the entire first year students that the transfer student was expelled from his previous school due to an incident of murder."

And thus I dropped the bomb.

It would not hurt to gauge the response from him as he must have some ideas about it.

Well, I had already sensed that there must be something else to this matter.

Okabe sensei seemed perplexed too.

Maybe I was right on spot.

"You know something, Don't you, sensei?", I decided to probe further.

"Ugh...it's exhausting enough to do all the paperwork. And now things have escalated this much?", he replied with an exasperated sigh.

"It's not yet clear as to who started this rumor, but judging from your reaction, it's clear that there is some truth to it. If it's possible, please tell me about it. I will do my best to de escalate things whatsoever I can."

I gave an assuring suggestion to help, befitting that of a class representative, to which I am sure that no teacher can deny.

"I guess, it would be better if at least you know this. Even I don't know much about this case, as I heard it from the principal."

Then he signalled me to bring my ear closer.

If he wants to remain secretive this much, then it must be something sensitive.

"Well, apparently, he was involved in a murder case and kept at the detention center for almost 6 months."
