Zoe's POV

The pool shimmered like glass beneath the afternoon sun, and with every step I took toward it, my heart thudded louder in my chest. I told myself to breathe, to walk normally, to act casual — but who was I kidding? I'd replayed his words in my head all morning: Meet me later at the pool. I wanna show you something.

Now that it was time, my palms wouldn't stop sweating.

I slowed my steps as I neared the path leading to the backyard, then stopped completely. Was I being too eager?

It was barely fifteen minutes past noon. What if he wasn't ready yet? What if he thought I was too desperate—too clingy?

I ran a hand through my hair, laughing under my breath. "God, Zoe, get a grip," I muttered to myself. "You're not even sure what this is yet."

Because truthfully, I wasn't.
