Watching Nohara Rin die by Kakashi's hand, Uchiha Obito felt his world collapse. The girl he loved was gone, killed by his best friend.
In an instant, Obito's right eye, its blood-red pupil bearing two tomoe, morphed into three, then transformed into a unique, shuriken-like pattern, the Mangekyō Sharingan.
"Rin." Kakashi whispered, staring at Rin's lifeless body. His left eye, too, spun uncontrollably, awakening its own Mangekyō Sharingan. But as a non-Uchiha, the strain overwhelmed him, and he collapsed, unconscious.
"Take them away." The Kiri-nin said, quickly recovering from the shock.
"You're all going to die." A strange figure snarled, stepping into the Kiri-nin's view.
"A Konoha ninja!" They exclaimed, startled. "Kill him!"
With a resounding thud, Obito stomped the ground and charged. His half-reconstructed body sprouted countless wooden branches.
"Kill him!" The Kiri-nin hurled shuriken at Obito, but to their horror, the blades passed through him harmlessly.
This was the power of Obito's Mangekyō Sharingan: Kamui.
With a crash, Obito's fist struck a Kiri-nin, wooden branches erupting from the man's body.
"Wood Release: Cutting Sprigs Technique." Obito intoned.
Several Kiri-nin descended from above, plunging their blades into Obito. Yet, they felt no flesh, only the resistance of stone.
"Wood Release: Hellscream Chaos." Obito declared.
Countless trees spiraled upward, tearing the surrounding Kiri-nin to shreds.
Moments later, the Kiri-nin lay dead, their blood pooling across the ground.
Obito gazed at Rin's body, blood-tears streaming from his right eye. "Rin, without you, I'm already in hell."
He stood motionless, like a statue, staring at her lifeless form.
"Rin, we'll meet again. I swear it." Obito vowed, stumbling away, Madara's words echoing in his mind.
"Rin, we'll see each other again…" With that, Obito left.
Unbeknownst to him, two figures emerged nearby.
"This plan exceeded my expectations." A youthful Uchiha Madara said, smirking.
"That was the Mangekyō, wasn't it? A space-time ability." White Zetsu mused.
"Indeed, the Mangekyō, the Uchiha clan's ultimate power." Madara said, chuckling. "This makes my plan far easier."
"Zetsu, I'll need your help moving forward." Madara added.
"You're not dead yet. It's too early for that." White Zetsu replied, shaking his head. "You'll need to train Obito further."
"Of course. Ninjutsu, Six Paths techniques, he's a blank slate aside from the Mangekyō. I'll arm him with more." Madara said, his eyes blazing with fervor. "He'll become another Uchiha Madara."
"Let's retrieve the Three-Tails." White Zetsu suggested.
"Go." Madara said with a faint smile.
They approached Rin's body. With the host dead, the tailed beast would soon emerge, though Madara's tampering wouldn't hold it for long.
"Let's reseal the Three-Tails." Madara said, forming hand signs. He swiftly sealed Isobu back into a container.
"Should we kill him?" White Zetsu asked, glancing at Kakashi.
"No." Madara said coldly, smirking. "He's the witness to Obito's despair, the key to his descent into hell. We can't kill him."
"Fine." White Zetsu said with a nonchalant grin.
"Let's go." Madara said, and they vanished, leaving the Kiri-nin corpses behind. They were meant to die anyway.
The blood-soaked ground looked desolate, the bodies' blood drying in the dirt.
"Where am I…" Kakashi groaned, dragging himself upright. He saw Rin's body and the dead Kiri-nin.
"Rin." He whispered, tears streaming down his face. He had killed her, even if she had chosen it.
"Rin, I'll take you back." Kakashi said, lifting her body and walking away, step by heavy step, ignoring the fallen Kiri-nin and their mysterious deaths.
With Obito presumed dead and now Rin gone, Kakashi's only remaining teammate, the blow was devastating.
He felt utterly broken, shrouded in despair.
"Those who don't cherish their comrades are worse than trash." Kakashi muttered with a bitter smile, leaving the tragic scene.
Soon, he returned to Konoha's encampment.
Minato, upon learning of Rin's death and seeing Kakashi's lifeless demeanor, took a deep breath. He needed to make a request to the Third Hokage.
In a Konoha tent, Minato and Tengen sat together.
"Tengen, Rin's dead." Minato said softly.
"Rin's dead?" Tengen said, stunned. He hadn't expected this. "What about Kakashi?"
"He's unharmed, but he's in no condition to fight." Minato said, shaking his head. "I want you to join me in writing to the Third Hokage, requesting Kakashi be sent back to Konoha to recover."
"No problem. Let Kakashi return for now." Tengen agreed quietly.
"Thank you, Tengen." Minato said, exhausted. He had now lost two students.
