Chapter 46 - Chapter 41 : The Threshold of the Inner Mountain ( Season 2 ) #20

The heavy brass gates leading to the Inner Sect rose nearly fifty feet into the mist-laden morning air, carved with ancient, swirling arrays that hummed with a subtle, protective pressure. Standing beneath the grand archway, Railin pulled his navy-blue robes tighter around his shoulders, his hands tucked loosely inside his sleeves.

Behind him lay the central arena of the Outer Academy, still reeling from the violent deaths of Deacon Xu and Senior Disciple Zhao. The whispers of ten thousand outer disciples still echoed in his mind—a volatile mixture of terror, awe, and suppressed anger. But none of that mattered now. His foundation had solidified firmly at the Eighth Level of Spirit Refining, the black liquid pool in his lower dantian expanding into a dense, turbulent sea that pulsed with immense, dark vitality.

A sharp, whistling wind cut through the mountain pass, carrying the crisp scent of pine mixed with rich, high-grade spirit qi—far denser than anything found in the outer canyon.

"You walk with unusual patience for someone who just slaughtered an outer deacon in front of five Inner Sect Elders," a crisp, melodious voice sounded from the shadows of the arched gateway.

Railin did not stop his rhythmic stride. His pitch-black pupils glinted slightly as he glanced toward a stone pillar to his left.

A young woman stepped out into the light. She wore the stark silver robes of an Inner Sect disciple, her long black hair tied back with a blue silk ribbon. At her waist hung a slender spirit sword in a white jade sheath that emitted a sharp, cold sword aura. Her cultivation base was clearly beyond the Spirit Refining realm—a genuine Foundation Establishment realm fighter, her spirit energy stable and pristine.

"And you stand in my path," Railin replied smoothly, his tone flat and indifferent. "Is this another execution squad sent by a noble faction?"

The silver-robed girl let out a short, dry laugh, her sharp eyes scanning Railin from head to toe. "If the Inner Sect wanted you executed, Elder Han would not have personally handed you the Inner Sect Identity Jade. My name is Liu Chen. I am an official guide assigned by the Inner Administrative Pavilion to escort the top three victors of the Outer Tournament."

She paused, looking past Railin's shoulder toward the empty stone trail. "Though... considering you crippled one candidate and forced the execution of another, it seems you are the only victor walking through these gates today."

"Efficiency saves time," Railin murmured, stepping past her through the massive brass archway.

The moment his boots crossed the boundary line, an invisible, crushing weight slammed down onto his shoulders. The protective grand array of the Inner Sect probed his body, its cold, spiritual pressure searching for forbidden talismans, demonic seals, or hidden external soul signatures.

Inside Railin's dantian, the liquid black pool of Ashen Devouring Qi stirred slightly. A thin layer of void energy wrapped around his dark core, completely cloaking the violent, devoured essence of Deacon Xu and Captain Han beneath a perfectly calm, standard Eighth Level Spirit Refining shell.

The array's pressure flickered for a fraction of a second before neutralizing, allowing him to pass without alarm.

Liu Chen watched him closely, her eyebrows lifting slightly in surprise. Most outer disciples collapsed to their knees or stumbled when first encountering the Inner Mountain's Ward of Purification. Yet this mysterious youth hadn't even blinked.

"Your composure is impressive," Liu Chen said, walking alongside him as the paved mountain trail turned upward toward the cloud-wrapped peaks. "But do not let today's victory make you arrogant. The Outer Academy is merely a nursery. The people you killed—Deacon Xu, Senior Disciple Zhao—they were nothing more than bottom-feeders who lacked the talent to advance in the Inner Sect."

"Bottom-feeders or not, they served as adequate fuel," Railin said smoothly, his eyes fixed on the towering peaks above. "What is the structure of the Inner Sect?"

Liu Chen cast a cautious glance at him, noting his cold, predatory choice of words. "The Inner Sect is divided into Four Main Peaks: the Sword Pavilion, the Pill Flame Peak, the Shadow Moon Hall, and the Imperial Dragon Peak. Each peak is ruled by Peak Lords who are at the mid or late stages of the Core Formation Realm. Beneath them are hundreds of elite inner disciples, true geniuses of the grand noble families and ancient martial sects."

She pointed toward a floating landmass hovering in the mist miles above them, suspended by massive, glowing iron chains.

"That is the Imperial Dragon Peak," Liu Chen continued, her voice dropping slightly. "Senior Disciple Feng's family—the Lord of Sun-Moon City—is heavily affiliated with the elders of that peak. You stripped Feng of his status and ruined their corruption scheme in front of the whole academy today. Feng may be in the Abyssal Dungeon, but his elder brother, Feng Wushuang, is a core disciple of the Imperial Dragon Peak. He is currently in closed-door cultivation at the Third Level of Foundation Establishment."

Railin didn't show a hint of surprise or fear. Instead, a faint, razor-sharp smirk curved his lips. "Third Level of Foundation Establishment... Good. The higher the cultivation base, the richer the energy sea."

Liu Chen stopped in her tracks, staring at Railin as if he were insane. "Do you truly not understand the gap between Spirit Refining and Foundation Establishment? Today you killed Deacon Xu, but Xu was an old man whose foundation had stagnated for thirty years due to low-grade pills. A true genius at the Third Level of Foundation Establishment can crush an Eighth Level Spirit Refining disciple with a single finger!"

"Then he had better use more than one finger," Railin replied indifferently, not slowing his pace. "Where are my quarters?"

Liu Chen let out a exasperated sigh, shaking her head as she caught up to him. "You are truly a lunatic. Because you placed first in the Outer Competition, you are granted a Medium-Tier Spirit Abode on the lower slopes of the Shadow Moon Hall. It comes with a small gathering array and ten low-grade spirit stones per month."

They continued up the winding stone stairs for another half hour, passing lush bamboo forests, glowing spirit gardens, and elegant pavilions carved directly out of the cliff faces. Along the way, several silver-robed inner disciples paused to watch them.

The news of the Outer Competition's bloodbath had clearly already spread into the Inner Sect. The disciples murmured among themselves, pointing at Railin with expressions ranging from curiosity to cold hostility.

"Is that the kid who devoured Zhao's cultivation?"

"Arrogant commoner... he actually dared to bring down Deacon Xu."

"He won't survive a month. Young Master Feng Wushuang will tear his skin off the moment he exits seclusion."

Railin ignored the hushed voices around him, his soul sense casually sweeping over the spectators. He noted their cultivation levels, their breathing patterns, and the density of their meridians. To him, the Inner Sect was not a sanctuary of learning; it was a dense, rich hunting ground filled with higher-tier prey.

Finally, Liu Chen stopped before a heavy wooden door built into the side of a steep granite cliff, surrounded by lush, purple-leafed bamboo.

"This is Spirit Abode 409," Liu Chen said, handing him a dark black jade key token. "Insert your spirit qi into the token to bind the defensive array. Tomorrow morning at dawn, you must report to the Main Registry Hall to select your official inner cultivation technique and receive your sect duties."

Railin took the jade key, feeling its cool stone surface. "Is there any restriction on fighting within the Inner Sect?"

Liu Chen's eyes narrowed. "Private murder is forbidden, but disputes are settled on the Life-and-Death Arena on the central peak. As long as both parties sign the soul-contract, the sect elders will not step in. Why do you ask?"

"Just confirming the ground rules," Railin said smoothly.

He placed his palm against the wooden door, sending a faint thread of dark spirit qi into the mechanism. The heavy wooden door creaked open, revealing a clean, simple stone room furnished with a meditation mat, a stone desk, and a small, glowing spirit-gathering array in the center of the floor.

"Thank you for the escort, Senior Sister Liu," Railin said, stepping inside without waiting for a reply.

"Railin," Liu Chen called out just before the door closed, her expression serious. "A word of advice. The Inner Sect values strength, but it values background and patience even more. Keep a low profile until you reach Foundation Establishment. Otherwise, you won't live long enough to see the next tournament."

CRACK.

The heavy stone door slid shut, sealing out the outside world and activating the basic defensive array around the abode.

Railin walked to the center of the room and sat down cross-legged on the meditation mat. The spirit qi inside the abode was indeed three times denser than in the outer dorms, flowing into his pores like a cool spring breeze.

He reached into his wide navy sleeves and pulled out the dark steel storage ring he had taken from Deacon Xu during the final chaos of the arena.

With a slight pulse of his Seventh Level soul sense, Railin snapped the dead deacon's lingering mental lock. The contents of the storage ring spilled out onto the stone desk in front of him.

Two hundred mid-grade spirit stones, five bottles of refined Foundation-Consolidating Pills, several high-tier elemental talismans, and a jade slip containing Deacon Xu's private cultivation notes.

"Not bad for a bottom-feeder," Railin murmured softly, his dark pupils reflecting the green glow of the spirit stones.

He closed his eyes, circulating the Ashen Devouring Technique deep within his meridians. The dense, dark liquid sea in his lower dantian churned smoothly, digesting the remaining fragments of Deacon Xu's high-tier vitality that had not yet been fully refined during his rapid breakthrough.

RUMBLE.

A faint, black mist erupted from his pores, forming a dark, swirling vortex around his body as he began drawing in the rich spirit energy of the Inner Mountain.

The Outer Academy was conquered. The Inner Sect lay before him.

And Railin was ready to feast.
