Chapter 52 - Chapter 47 : Ice and Ash — An Uneasy Alliance ( Season 2 ) #26

The swirling crimson fog grew noticeably cooler, turning from a humid, suffocating haze into a crisp, frost-laced mist as Railin moved closer to the northern perimeter of the Blood-Mist Lake basin. The ground beneath his leather boots shifted from soft, damp moss to jagged sheets of black stone covered in thin layers of crystal frost.

Consuming the Blood-Core Flower and devouring the cultivation bases of the two Imperial Dragon Peak disciples back in the subterranean ruin had pushed Railin's power to its absolute limits. His lower dantian now brimmed with a dense, molten sea of dark-blue liquid qi that crackled with subtle specks of black lightning. Every breath he took felt effortlessly deep, his meridians fully expanded and thoroughly tempered.

He was standing at the threshold of the Half-Step Foundation Establishment realm. All that remained was a final spark—a massive influx of high-grade spirit essence—to trigger the total crystallization of his liquid foundation.

Railin slowed his pace, melting into the deep shadows cast by a wall of icy karst pillars.

BOOM!

A violent shockwave tore through the mist two hundred yards ahead, followed by the sharp, ringing clash of metal against bone. The mountain air vibrated with intense bursts of freezing energy, instantly turning the surrounding crimson fog into falling frost crystals.

Roar!

A guttural, blood-curdling screech echoed through the ravine. It was a roar filled with wild, monstrous fury, heavy with the oppressive pressure of a Peak Third-Rank Spirit Beast—an entity terrifyingly close to breaking into the Fourth-Rank (Foundation Establishment equivalent).

Railin did not rush forward. Suppressing his spirit qi to absolute zero, he leaped silently onto the high ledge of a frost-covered rock face, pulling his dark navy hood low as he looked down into the sunken clearing below.

The battlefield was a disaster zone. The black stone floor was shattered into jagged craters, covered in thick sheets of white frost and streaks of dark green beast blood.

At the center of the clearing stood the monstrous cause of the commotion: a Frost-Spine Behemoth. The creature stood fifteen feet tall, resembling a massive, dark-furred ape armored with thick slabs of glacial ice along its spine and chest. Its glowing blue eyes raged with feral insanity, and its massive arms—each as thick as an ancient cedar trunk—were swinging wildly, shattering boulders into dust with every strike.

Lying dead near the edges of the clearing were two inner disciples wearing frost-white robes. Their bodies were crushed, their weapons snapped in half.

The only person left standing against the beast was the icy young woman from the Ice Mystic Peak whom Railin had encountered back at the transport platform and the registry hall.

Her frost-white robes were torn at the sleeve, stained with flecks of crimson blood. Her long, jet-black hair fluttered wildly in the violent winds generated by the beast's attacks. Despite being wounded and standing alone against a creature that outmatched her in raw physical strength, her pale, exquisite face remained terrifyingly calm. Her piercing blue eyes glowed with an intense, icy light.

Clang!

She wielded a long, slender rapier forged of translucent blue ice-iron. With every fluid flick of her wrist, three-foot-long ice blades erupted from the air, slicing into the beast's frozen armor.

"Ice Realm — Frost Needle Array!" she rasped, her cold, melodious voice cutting through the roaring wind.

Swish! Swish! Swish!

A dozen glowing ice needles materialized around her body, shooting forward like a volley of spears. They slammed directly into the beast's left eye and chest joints, causing green blood to spurt out violently!

ROAR!

The Frost-Spine Behemoth screamed in agony. Driven into a suicidal frenzy by the loss of its eye, the beast ignored the piercing ice needles and slammed both of its massive, ice-armored fists directly down onto the ground!

BOOM!

A wave of crushing kinetic force mixed with icy spikes erupted from the stone floor, rushing straight toward the young woman!

She attempted to leap backward using a high-level wind-stepping technique, but her left ankle buckled slightly—a result of a hidden injury sustained earlier in the fight. Her speed lagged by a fraction of a second. The devastating wave of ice spikes was on course to crush her torso!

On the high rock ledge above, Railin's black eyes analyzed the situation with razor-sharp calculation.

He had no inherent obligation to save a disciple from the Ice Mystic Peak. In the dark, unforgiving world of cultivation, watching two powers destroy each other was standard practice.

However, Railin's gaze locked onto the glowing, fist-sized blue core pulsing inside the chest of the Frost-Spine Behemoth. That beast core contained an immense concentration of pure, unrefined frost spirit energy. If devoured alongside the beast's massive vital essence, it would provide the exact spark he needed to push his dantian past the threshold into the Half-Step Foundation Establishment stage.

Furthermore, he recognized the girl's tactical value. The Ice Mystic Peak was the primary rival to the Imperial Dragon Peak within the Inner Sect. An uneasy alignment with her would draw away the noble faction's attention while he prepared his final strike at the lake.

Swoosh.

Before the crushing wave of ice spikes could reach the young woman, a dark phantom dropped from the sky.

Railin landed directly between the girl and the oncoming blast.

He didn't draw a blade. He simply stepped forward, his dark navy robes billowing in the freezing gale, and extended his left hand flat into the air.

The Ashen Devouring Technique — Void Wall!

VRRRRR!

A pitch-black, swirling vortex of gravitational energy erupted from Railin's palm, expanding into a three-foot barrier of dark blue light.

BANG!

The deadly wave of ice spikes slammed violently into the black vortex. Instead of shattering Railin's arm or pushing him back, the terrifying kinetic force and frozen spirit qi were instantly absorbed! The black whirlpool devouring the energy like a deep ocean trench, grinding the sharp ice spikes into harmless white mist within seconds.

The young woman's blue eyes widened in genuine shock. She lowered her slender rapier slightly, staring at the lean back of the dark-robed youth who had suddenly appeared in front of her out of nowhere.

"You..." she whispered, her icy voice trembling slightly with disbelief. "The commoner from the registry..."

Railin did not turn his head to look at her. His eyes remained locked on the enraged, half-blind beast towering twenty feet away.

"If you want to live," Railin said flatly, his voice as cold as the surrounding frost, "freeze its rear joints for three seconds."

The young woman was a seasoned inner disciple. She didn't ask stupid questions, nor did she hesitate to analyze his motives. The moment Railin spoke, her instincts kicked in.

BOOM!

She stomped her leather boot onto the stone floor, channeling the remainder of her icy spirit qi into her rapier.

"Glacial Seal — Absolute Zero!" she yelled, thrusting her rapier into the ground.

A wave of dense, translucent blue frost rushed across the black stone, wrapping around the Frost-Spine Behemoth's massive hind legs. The ice expanded instantly, freezing the beast's knees into solid blocks of glacial stone!

ROAR!

The beast struggled frantically, its massive upper body thrashing as it tried to shatter the glacial seal holding its legs.

Three seconds was all Railin needed.

The Eclipse Soul Scripture — Concentrated Soul Needle!

Buzz!

From the dark soul sphere inside Railin's upper dantian, an exceptionally thick, pitch-black needle of mental energy coalesced. It didn't just target the beast's outer mind; Railin poured seventy percent of his soul strength into this single strike, aiming straight for the beast's primitive sea of consciousness!

THWACK!

An invisible beam of mental force cut through the icy air, plunging directly into the center of the Behemoth's skull!

The massive beast froze entirely. Its single remaining blue eye went completely dull, the terrifying aura radiating from its body instantly collapsing into nothingness. The soul needle had obliterated its spiritual consciousness in an instant.

Before the giant carcass could even tilt forward, Railin blurred across the stone clearing like a shadow.

He appeared directly in front of the beast's chest. His right hand, clad in dark blue spirit qi, stabbed forward like a steel spear, plunging straight through the shattered armor plates and into the beast's heart chamber!

His fingers wrapped around the icy, vibrating beast core.

"Devour," Railin commanded coldly.

VRRRRRRRR!

A terrifying, pitch-black whirlpool materialized from Railin's hand, sinking deep into the monster's flesh!

The young woman watched in absolute, paralyzed horor as the massive fifteen-foot Frost-Spine Behemoth shriveled up at a visible, horrifying speed.

Its thick, dark fur turned gray and brittle. Its massive muscles collapsed into dust, and its rich, Third-Rank beast blood was violently extracted, surging up through Railin's arm in thick, glowing streams of crimson and blue energy.

Gurgle... CRACK!

Within fifteen seconds, the colossal beast—a terrifying predator that had slaughtered two inner disciples—was reduced to a pile of dry, brittle bones and fine black dust.

BOOM!

Inside Railin's lower dantian, the devoured beast core and vital essence collided with the refined medicinal energy of the Blood-Core Flower. The molten pool of spirit qi churned like a erupting volcano!

CRACKLE!

Specks of dark blue lightning erupted from Railin's skin, creating a heavy, suffocating pressure that rippled across the frozen clearing. His meridians expanded once more, their walls turning translucent and rock-solid as his liquid core condensed into a single, dense, swirling vortex.

Half-Step Foundation Establishment Realm — Achieved!

Railin slowly withdrew his hand, letting the last grains of black dust drift away in the wind. He took a long, deep breath, stabilizing the immense power surging through his newly transformed core.

He turned around slowly, his black eyes locking onto the young woman standing thirty feet away.

She had already stepped back, holding her slender ice rapier in front of her in a defensive posture. Her pale face was completely devoid of color, her blue eyes filled with extreme vigilance and a deep, instinctual dread.

She had witnessed the entire process. The silent mental kill. The terrifying, forbidden devouring technique that turned a peak Third-Rank beast to ash within seconds.

"What... what kind of monster are you?" she asked, her voice tight, her knuckles white as she gripped her sword hilt. "That is not any martial art of the Inner Sect. You devoured its entire life essence."

Railin looked at her calmly, his hands slipping back into his long sleeves. He did not raise his aura, nor did he make any aggressive moves.

"It matters little what it is," Railin said smoothly. "What matters is that the beast is dead, and you are still breathing."

The young woman's eyes flickered. She swallowed hard, forcing her breathing to stabilize as she processed his words. He was right. If he wanted her dead, he could have launched that invisible soul attack while her back was turned, or simply let the beast crush her.

She lowered her rapier slightly, though her stance remained guarded.

"I am Su Chen," she said, her voice regaining its crisp, icy tone. "Core Disciple of the Ice Mystic Peak."

"Railin," he replied flatly.

"Why did you intervene?" Su Chen asked, her blue eyes narrowing as she studied his calm face. "You risk exposing your hidden strength to an outsider. If I report what I saw today to the Sect Enforcement Hall, you will be branded a demonic cultivator and hunted by the Peak Elders."

Railin let out a low, cold laugh that sent a chill down Su Chen's spine.

"You won't report it," Railin said, taking a casual step forward. "First, because you have no proof—the evidence has already turned to ash. Second, because your Ice Mystic Peak is currently at war with the Imperial Dragon Peak. And third..."

Railin paused, his eyes narrowing into two razor-sharp slits.

"...Senior Disciple Lu has deployed over a dozen Ninth Level disciples around the Blood-Mist Lake. Your squad was wiped out, leaving you alone. Reporting me solves none of your immediate problems. Working with me might keep you alive."

Su Chen fell silent. Her intelligence was sharp enough to realize that every single word Railin spoke was cold, unvarnished truth. Her two teammates were dead, her spirit qi was depleted by forty percent, and the Imperial Dragon Peak had effectively sealed off the central lake. She was trapped in a hostile boundary zone.

"An alliance?" Su Chen asked, her icy brow twitching slightly. "You want me to fight alongside someone who consumes flesh and spirit?"

"I don't need you to fight alongside me," Railin replied coldly. "I need a distraction. Senior Disciple Lu expects me to fall into his trap at the lake. When I strike their main formation, the noble faction will panic. You can use that chaos to secure the central trial token or kill your rivals."

Su Chen stared at Railin for a long moment. She could feel the terrifying, pressurized aura of the Half-Step Foundation Establishment base hidden beneath his calm exterior. This commoner youth was no longer just a talented survivor; he was a walking calamity waiting to be unleashed upon the Imperial Dragon Peak.

"A temporary contract," Su Chen finally said, sheathing her slender rapier with a crisp click. "Until the noble faction at the lake is wiped out. After that, we go our separate ways."

"Agreed," Railin murmured.

He turned his gaze toward the south, where the dense red fog was beginning to glow with the sinister, pulsing light of a massive spirit array. The Blood-Mist Lake was just half a mile away.

The alliance of Ice and Ash was forged—and the hunters at the lake were about to become the prey.
