***Devin's POV**
"Mother" I said, as I looked up to see my mother entering my office.
"You promised me lunch, remember?" She asked as she sat down and took out her phone.
"I didn't…" I began but she cut me off with a recording of me, promising her to dinner.
"Ahh. I see, no wonder you asked me, so I'll give you a clear answer. Kinda sneaky, no?" I said, giving her a side smile, with raised eyebrow, and getting up to take her to dinner.
"What can I say? I know my son well" She said as she stood up, arranging her coat and walking ahead of me.
I let out a little chuckle and followed her closely behind, going to the front of my company where the car was parked.
"I'll drive us, Mark. You are good" I said, taking the key from the chauffer and entering the driver's seat.
I waited for her to enter, but she entered the back door and sat down.
"Erm, Mom. The front chair is empty, you love front seats" I said, looking at her with crunched eyebrows.
My mom loves the front seat, even if it was the driver that was driving, she always sat at the front. Even in an Uber.
"Just drive. We are picking someone up" She said, giving me a small smile.
"Someone, huh?. Mom, I'm not doing a blind date again. I've told you and Dad a million times" I said but put the gear into drive and began driving.
She didn't give me anymore response as she began directing me, until we reached a particular spot.
"Mom. Hell no" I said as I began slowing down a bit.
"Hell, yes" She said, and from the rearview mirror I could see her nodding her head.
I drove till I reached the intersection and saw a very annoying human being that I was related to by blood. She walked to the other end of the car and sat at the front seat.
"Mom. You gave up your seat for…for this sister of mine?" I said, as I didn't want to sound too insulting when my mother was here. It would definitely earn me a slipper upside my head.
My mom was a Latina, which meant she and discipline went hand in hand and I was so sure I'd lose my head after I told her 'Hell no'.
"Yes. I got intel from this sister of yours that you are in love with someone. So take me to her" My mom said, nudging her chin.
"Mom, with all due respect, fuck no…" i started but was caught off guard with a slap on my head, I expected it but it didn't hurt any less, as my eyes stood still but the chuckle from my sister was enough to bring me out my shock.
"Never use that word when talking directly to me" My mom said, and the sterness of her voice could be felt.
"Mom, honestly, though, no way I'm taking you to her. She…we've not even talked. How can I be in love with her?" I told my mom trying to convince otherwise.
Or you are trying to stop the recurrent thoughts of her in your mind?
"Well. Take me to eat then. Grilled House" She said, taking her face to the window. I gave my sister a side glare as I breathed out and drove off to Grilled House.
"I will fucking kill you " I whispered to my sister as I walked behind her into Grilled House.
We entered the restaurant and as if on control, my eyes darting around for her, but she wasn't here.
And at that moment, I felt a conflict of emotions. I was relieved she wasn't here but I was kind of…
Sad? My mind said
"Shut the fuck up" I whispered and my sister gave me a scan from head to toe.
"Weirdo" She said and went to take her seat.
Before we could get settled, the manager, and five of his staffs came to our table.
"Good afternoon, Mrs Klein" He greeted and bowed.
"I remember you. You served our jubilee" My mom said as she took the menu.
"Yes ma. Please feel free to make your order, our staffs are at your service" He said and bowed, but leaving us with five of his staffs.
"Leave. We'll call you when we've made our decision" I said and settled into the chair. We were busy making our choices, when I saw Sophie in shock. Her eyes widen.
"Soph, darling. What are you looking at?" I asked her, squinting my eyes.
She moved her mouth to speak but someone interrupted her and the voice had me in the same position, Soph was.
I looked to my mom and she gripped the menu tighter than usual.
"Hello, Devin. How ya doing?" The voice said as the chair was pulled out.
I turned my head to face the owner of the voice and it was just like I expected.
"Kyla" I said, my feet beginning to dance in my shoes. What the hell is she doing here?.
"Hello, Devin. I genuinely thought you wouldn't recognize me. It's been what? Six months?" She said as she removed her coat, and my eyes darted to her swollen tummy.
"You didn't remove it" I said, my eyes not leaving hers.
"Now, why would I?" She said, as she beckoned on the waiter.
"What do you want?" Sophie finally spoke, her eyes shooting darts.
"To eat. Isn't that why the family is here?" She said and at this point the waiter came, and we all placed our order.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, this time, it was me gripping the champagne glass.
"Your father called me. Isn't that fantastic? Seems he's looking for a wife and no other better than the lady you got pregnant" She said, smiling and adjusting her dress.
My eyes went to Sophie and she had the same look of suspicion on her face.
"Remind me again, why my father would call you directly? Your parents are very much alive, the last time I checked" I asked, looking at her squarely.
"Well…." She began but stopped. She looked around the table and adjusted in her seat.
"That's not important. What's important is that, I'm here to take my rightful position to be Mrs. Klein"
"We'll see about that. Now won't we?"
