Chapter 17 - Battle Begins - Part 1

Aiden's footsteps echoed against the cobblestone path as he made his way toward Valora City Gym. The towering structure loomed before him, its stone walls covered in creeping ivy, a testament to its long-standing presence in the heart of the city. The Gym had an old-world charm, yet its large, reinforced doors held the weight of modern challenges within. Aiden couldn't help but feel a flutter of nervous excitement in his chest as he walked closer.

The sun had risen higher in the sky, casting warm, golden light over the city. The streets were still bustling with activity as people moved between markets and shops, but there was something different about today. It wasn't just another day in Valora City—it was the day Aiden would face a Gym Leader.

He reached the front entrance of the Gym and pushed the heavy wooden door open, stepping inside. The cool, quiet atmosphere inside was a sharp contrast to the busy streets outside. The Gym's interior was dimly lit, with high ceilings and ancient stone walls lined with training memorabilia. There were a few scattered trainers sitting on benches, their Pokémon resting beside them as they waited for their own challenges.

Aiden approached the receptionist's desk, where a woman with short, jet-black hair and a professional yet welcoming demeanor was standing. She was busy typing something into a console but looked up as Aiden approached.

"Good morning," the receptionist said, her voice calm yet filled with purpose. "You must be here for your Gym Battle?"

Aiden nodded, reaching into his jacket pocket and pulling out his Trainer ID card. He placed it gently on the desk, letting the card's holographic light illuminate for the receptionist to inspect.

"Yes, I'm Aiden Frostveil. I'm here to challenge Gym Leader Gareth," Aiden said, trying to keep his voice steady, even though the weight of the moment was beginning to settle over him.

The receptionist scanned the ID card, her eyes flicking to the screen and back up to Aiden. She gave a polite nod.

"Ah, Aiden. I see you've completed your preliminary tasks. You're cleared to battle." She smiled as she handed back his card. "You've been assigned a One-Star Gym Challenge, so your battle will be in the Training Arena, the second floor. Please head up when you're ready."

Aiden smiled in gratitude, slipping the ID back into his pocket.

"Thank you," he said. "I'm ready."

The receptionist gestured toward the elevator in the corner of the room. "The elevator is over there. Just step inside when you're ready. It'll take you directly to the arena."

Aiden nodded, taking one last glance around the spacious room before heading toward the elevator. As the doors slid open with a soft chime, he stepped inside and pressed the button for the second floor. The doors closed with a smooth whoosh, and the elevator hummed as it ascended.

The elevator stopped with a soft jolt, and the doors slid open to reveal the Training Arena. The space was vast, its high walls lined with large windows that allowed sunlight to pour in. The air was thick with the scent of fresh grass and the lingering smell of battle from countless matches. The floor was made of soft, well-worn mats designed to cushion the Pokémon during their battles.

Aiden stepped out, his eyes immediately finding the figure standing at the far side of the arena. Gym Leader Gareth.

He was tall and broad-shouldered, his posture straight and unyielding as he stood with his arms crossed. His attire was practical, consisting of a dark green, fitted jacket and pants, paired with sturdy boots that looked well-worn from years of battle. His hair was dark brown and cropped short, with streaks of gray at the temples that spoke to his experience and age. A rugged scar ran across his left cheek, a silent reminder of battles fought and victories won.

Gareth's eyes were sharp, a glint of amusement playing at the corner of his lips as he studied Aiden. His expression was calm, but there was an undeniable aura of authority around him, one that made Aiden's heart beat faster. This was a man who had seen countless battles, and now Aiden was about to face him.

"You must be Aiden," Gareth's voice was deep and gravelly, like the rumble of distant thunder. He uncrossed his arms and stepped forward, his gaze never leaving Aiden's face. "Ready for your first test?"

Aiden nodded, his nerves turning into a focused determination. "I am. I've trained hard for this moment."

Gareth chuckled softly, a sound that rumbled from deep within his chest. "Good. You'll need it." His eyes flicked toward the side, where a group of Gym Trainers were watching, their expressions full of quiet interest. "This arena's seen its fair share of battles, but I always enjoy a good challenge. Show me what you've got, Aiden."

Aiden felt a surge of confidence at the Gym Leader's words. Despite the seriousness of the situation, Gareth's tone was not dismissive—it was almost… respectful.

Gareth glanced back over his shoulder, nodding to a nearby assistant, who began to prepare the battlefield. "I'll choose the first Pokémon," he said. "Let's see how well you've prepared. Prepare yourself, Aiden."

Aiden took a deep breath, feeling the tension rise in the air. The battle was about to begin. He could hear the sound of the doors sliding open as the Gym Leader called out his first Pokémon.

Aiden stood in the middle of the battlefield, his heart pounding as he looked across the gym arena at Gareth, the Gym Leader. The air seemed thick with tension. The sound of his pulse echoed in his ears, the excitement of the challenge blending with a sharp sting of nervousness.

Across from him, Gareth's expression was unreadable as he stood tall, ready for the first round of the battle.

Gareth's hand reached to his belt, and with a smooth motion, he tossed a Poké Ball into the air. The ball popped open with a flash of light, and from the sphere emerged Venipede, the spiny, aggressive Bug/Poison-type.

The Pokémon landed on the ground with a sharp click of its segmented legs, its glowing eyes narrowing as it locked onto Ponyta. The dark poison oozed from its body as it hissed at the fiery mare.

Aiden exhaled sharply. This would be no easy battle. Venipede was small, but its agility and poison could make this fight much harder than it seemed at first glance.

"Well, Aiden, I'm curious to see how well you handle my little Venipede here," Gareth said, his voice calm and authoritative. His eyes sparkled with the thrill of the fight. "Venipede, let's start off with Rollout."

Aiden's eyes widened. He knew that Rollout, a move that allowed Venipede to increase its speed and power with each consecutive hit, could be devastating. He couldn't afford to let it build up momentum.

"Ponyta, Agility!" Aiden shouted, his voice filled with urgency.

Ponyta reacted instantly, her hooves striking the mat as she galloped forward in a burst of flame, dodging to the side just as Venipede's body rolled towards her. The Bug-type slid past Ponyta, narrowly missing its target.

But it wasn't over yet.

"Venipede, again!" Gareth commanded.

Venipede spun once more, its body turning into a spinning missile aimed directly at Ponyta. This time, its speed had increased.

"Ponyta, Flame Wheel!" Aiden ordered, his voice firm.

With a burst of fiery energy, Ponyta's body ignited as she charged forward, her hooves kicking up embers as she met Venipede head-on. The collision was brutal. Venipede's body hit Ponyta with the force of a speeding truck, and the fiery horse staggered back, losing her balance momentarily.

"Get up, Ponyta!" Aiden shouted, his voice a mixture of concern and encouragement.

Ponyta shook her head, flame dancing around her body as she stood, determination blazing in her eyes.

But there was no time to relax.

"Venipede, Poison Sting!" Gareth barked.

Venipede lashed out with its sharp, poisonous stingers. The attack was fast, and before Aiden could react, one of the stingers found its mark. It sank deep into Ponyta's side, right between her ribs, the venom coating the wound instantly. Ponyta cried out in pain, and a streak of blood trailed from the puncture.

"Ponyta!" Aiden yelled in panic, his stomach churning.

Ponyta took a staggering step back, her body trembling. The poison began to spread quickly through her system, and her movements slowed as she fought the effects.

"Don't let up, Ponyta," Aiden said, his voice soft but firm. "I know you can do this."

Ponyta snorted, shaking her head as the blood trickled down her side, staining her white fur. Her flame flickered dangerously but didn't die out. The fiery steed gritted her teeth, standing tall once more.

"Flame Wheel!" Aiden called out, trying to rally his Pokémon despite the growing concern for her well-being.

With an incredible burst of speed, Ponyta charged again, her body igniting with fire as she collided with Venipede. This time, the Bug/Poison-type was knocked off balance, its body flipping end over end before slamming into the ground with a heavy thud.

The arena fell silent for a brief moment, the only sound being the steady breathing of both Pokémon. Venipede struggled to get back on its feet, shaking its head as it tried to regain its composure.

Gareth didn't show any signs of panic. He simply watched, waiting for the next move.

"Venipede, don't back down," Gareth said, his voice steady. "We're not done yet. Use Toxic!"

Aiden's eyes widened. Toxic was a dangerous move—it would inflict debilitating damage over time, wearing down Ponyta even further. If she didn't finish this soon, things could get worse.

"Ponyta, dodge it! Agility!" Aiden shouted, his heart racing.

Ponyta leapt to the side just as Venipede released a thick, green venomous cloud. The cloud spread across the arena like a poisonous mist, but Ponyta managed to evade it, her body moving in a blur.

"Now! Flame Wheel again!" Aiden urged.

With a burst of fiery power, Ponyta hurtled forward, her flames spinning around her as she collided once more with Venipede. This time, the impact was enough. Venipede's body was slammed into the ground, hard. It lay there for a moment, dazed, unable to move.

Aiden let out a relieved breath, but his relief was short-lived. Venipede's body twitched, and with a low growl, it slowly began to get up again. It was covered in scorch marks, its body smoking, but it still had fight in it.

Gareth's voice was firm, almost like a challenge. "Venipede, finish it. Rollout once more!"

Venipede's body spun once again, its speed rapidly increasing. Aiden's eyes locked onto the spinning Bug-type. The force of the Rollout would finish Ponyta if it connected. He had no choice.

"Ponyta, Dodge and then Flame Wheel! Don't let it hit!"

Ponyta's hooves kicked off the ground, and she leapt out of the way just as Venipede barreled toward her. Her fiery body ignited in a flash of light, and she spun to meet her opponent.

The collision was brutal, the heat of the flames overwhelming the arena as Ponyta's flame-enveloped body slammed into Venipede, this time with all her strength.

Venipede let out a sharp cry as it was thrown across the battlefield, its body crumpling into a heap.

This time, it didn't move.

Aiden took a deep breath, his heart still pounding in his chest. The battle had been intense—more intense than he had anticipated. He could see the damage on both Pokémon, but it was clear that Ponyta had pulled through.

Ponyta stood tall, her body trembling from exhaustion and the poison still flowing through her veins. Blood stained her side, her once-bright mane flickering with only faint embers.

"Good work, Ponyta," Aiden whispered, recalling her into her Poké Ball as he called out, "You did great. Rest now."

He stood there, watching as the Gym Leader knelt next to his fallen Pokémon. Gareth's face remained calm, but there was a slight nod of respect in his gesture.

"Well done, Aiden. You've got guts. But this is only the beginning," Gareth said, his voice carrying a weight of experience.

Aiden nodded, a quiet smile tugging at his lips despite the exhaustion. "Thank you, I won't let up."
