Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Girl Who Saw the Boy

Chapter 37: The Girl Who Saw the Boy

Regarding letting an unfamiliar high school girl stay at his house, Sakurai Saki didn't feel any psychological pressure at all.

He wasn't afraid of being robbed. There was nothing in his house that could be considered "valuable." The most expensive item was probably his high-spec computer — but she looked so weak, was she going to dismantle the case and carry it away?

Sakurai pedaled his bike to the school gate, his mind still lingering on the image of the girl clinging to him, refusing to let him leave in morning.

That feeling of being treated like some kind of "savior"… was really not pleasant. Sakurai was beginning to regret bringing her home the night before. A single small act could lead to a whole bunch of trouble — something he definitely didn't want.

It would be better not to let kindness take over again in the future.

...

Stopping his bike and switching to walking it, Sakurai Saki spotted a familiar figure up ahead — Iino Miko, wearing her "Disciplinary Committee" armband.

Miko: ( 。 •̀ ⤙ •́ 。 )

"Already scolding people again."

So early in the morning, and already so energetic — is calling people out really that fun?

"Sakurai-san! Good morning!"

"General Affairs Sakurai, good morning!"

"Yo! Sakurai! Come play basketball with us next time!"

Students passed by one after another, and Sakurai Saki smiled and greeted them back.

He was fairly well-known at school, mainly because he had drawn attention during last fall's sports festival.

At the school gate.

Iino Miko looked at Sakurai Saki with suspicion.

'Today Sakurai-senpai is walking way too properly, like a robot, suspicious!'

<(ㅍ _ㅍ)>

Was he planning to tease her again? Miko was terrified inside.

(ó﹏ò。)

To a justice-filled Miko-chan, accepting a bribe from senpai was absolutely unacceptable!

The first time, he had caught her off guard, so it was unavoidable — that was fine.

The second time, it was senpai being considerate of his kouhai — that was also fine.

The third time! Absolutely not! This can't happen a third time!

"Hmm? Miko-chan, why are you looking at me like that?" Sakurai Saki hadn't planned to tease her today.

( ╹ -╹)?

"Sakurai-senpai! Today you absolutely cannot use snacks to bribe me again!" Little Miko declared righteously.

(˶˃⤙˂˶)

"Oh! I almost forgot."

Sakurai Saki suddenly remembered, taking a few coffee candies from his pocket and handing them to her.

"During lunch break, if you're tired, you can have some candy. You were top-ranked when entering this school, right? You must study hard all the time, so make sure to keep your sugar levels up."

ദ്ദി(˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ) ✧

Iino Miko froze on the spot.

∘ ∘ ∘ ( °ヮ° ) ?

Why? Why was senpai still bribing her? She clearly told him not to!

As a good kid, Iino Miko wasn't good at refusing other people's kindness.

Instinctively, she reached out — and by the time she realized, Sakurai Saki was already gone.

'I… I got bribed again!'

૮₍˶Ó﹏Ò ⑅₎ა

This can't be happening!

But senpai had already walked far away.

Miko-chan looked at the hard candy in her hand and, in the end, still put it in her pocket.

In those few seconds when she lowered her head, a flash of yellow darted past the school gate.

"Eh!!! Hayasaka-senpai!!!"

Σ(°△° ꪱꪱꪱ)

Iino Yayako shouted in despair.

Several girls nearby saw her expression and broke into happy smiles, like when seeing an adorable little animal.

She was just too cute.

———

Entering the classroom building, Sakurai Saki stood in front of the shoe locker for a long time.

∘ ∘ ∘ ( ° _ ° ) ?

After changing into indoor shoes, he took out an envelope from it — white envelope, sealed with a pink heart.

A love letter?

Someone still confessed this old-fashioned way these days? If you were going to confess via letter, Sakurai Saki thought it would be better to just use a phone.

Not paying it much mind, Sakurai Saki held the love letter and walked off.

...

Morning classes were pretty boring.

Sakurai Saki sat by the window, diligently taking notes.

He had never slacked off during class, but today, it was a bit hard to concentrate.

"Ah~ I wanna reach enlightenment already!" An uncle lay sprawled across the teacher's podium, picking his nose.

Being someone with supernatural powers meant learning to accept the ridiculously dumb abilities that awakened every day.

Supernatural ability: Spiritual power

Effect: Able to see things normal people can't.

Side effect: Can't be turned off and doubles libido.

Would a teenage boy with supernatural powers end up seeing ghostly uncle?

This kind of encounter… please, just spare me.

"Moshi moshi, you can see me, can't you?"

ヾ(^ ∇ ^).

Sakurai Saki pretended not to hear.

He kept his head down, taking notes, but the ghost girl with white hair and gray eyes stood right in his line of sight.

Sakurai Saki didn't have x-ray vision — he couldn't see the blackboard.

But he listened to the teacher's lecture and guessed what was being written, still managing to take fairly accurate notes.

The ghost girl poked at Sakurai Saki's face, her fingers passing right through.

Sakurai scratched his head naturally, then propped his left cheek up with his hand and subtly adjusted his posture.

Next, he saw the old man ghost sitting on the English teacher's shoulder.

Ehm… kinda gross.

"My name's Yakumo Shiro. What's your name?" The ghost girl with white hair and gray eyes kept pestering him.

o( ˶^▾^˶ )o

Sakurai Saki didn't want to get involved in anything weird with a ghost he could only see for a single day.

"You accepted my love letter, so that means you want to date me, right?"

Sakurai Saki: "..."

Is it too late to regret now?

As someone popular enough to receive love letters almost every week, Sakurai Saki had never imagined he'd one day get one from a ghost.

"I'm really smart, I can help you cheat on tests!"

Hey! What are you even saying!?

I'm ranked third in the entire Shuchiin High, and you think I need your help?

"Sakurai-kun, which answer do you choose for this one?" the teacher asked.

"C," Sakurai Saki stood up and replied.

"Sakurai? That's such a nice name! I really like cherry blossoms~" Yakumo Shiro mumbled to herself.

"Because the day I became a ghost was when the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. Oh, right, I died by falling off the rooftop and got smashed into pieces. The students walking underneath were scared out of their minds!" the ghost girl cheerfully explained.

૮(˶╥︿╥)ა

So calmly talking about such a tragic story, huh, this ghost.

Having just resolved not to be soft-hearted anymore, Sakurai Saki chose to pretend he was deaf.

Talking to her now would be even weirder, wouldn't it? They were in the middle of class, after all. Sakurai Saki didn't want his image as the student council's friendly general affairs officer to be reduced to some lunatic who talks to himself.

"Pretending not to see me is useless, Sakurai-kun. That love letter—only you could activate it." Yakumo Shiro hovered in front of Sakurai Saki, facing him.

(≖⩊≖)

"So, do you want to accept my confession?"

Not even a little. Maybe he could try giving the letter to someone else later.

That guy Ishigami could accept a 2D waifu, so a ghost wife might not be out of the question?

This ghost was even cuter than expected — at least she wasn't Cthulhu-style. And not horror-movie creepy either, more like 2D anime-style cute.

Yakumo-san, you're standing way too close now.

You're blocking my view of the board.
