Chapter 11 - Dessert & Talk

The restaurant glowed like a cozy little pocket of magic nestled between two grimy alleyways and a vape shop. The café looked way too fancy for someone who still occasionally ate cereal straight out of the box with a fork (don't judge me—I was out of spoons, okay?).

I stepped inside, immediately assaulted by the scent of sizzling garlic butter and class. Like, expensive class. The kind where the menus probably didn't have prices on them because "if you have to ask…"

The host gave me the kind of look normally reserved for people who say "expresso" instead of "espresso."

"Name?" she asked.

"Allen," I said, trying to sound smooth and not like someone whose dog just chewed a hole in their socks that morning. "Reservation for two?"

She scanned her list, then motioned toward a cozy candlelit corner booth.

"Mia is already waiting."

Already waiting.

OH NO.

I was late?

I checked my new Pearl Nova 8S Quantum. Nope. I was three minutes early.

The system buzzed.

[Mini-Task: Arrive Before Your Date?]

[Outcome: FAILED]

[But You Tried! Have $25 For Effort.]

[Also: She's Early Because She Was Excited. Try Not to Panic.]

I tried not to panic.

I failed at that too.

Walking toward the booth felt like walking into an exam I forgot to study for. My palms were clammy. My knees weirdly jello-y. And then—there she was.

Mia.

She looked up and smiled, and bam, there went all my brain cells.

She wasn't wearing anything too fancy—just a sundress and a denim jacket—but she looked so... her. Effortlessly radiant. Confident. And somehow, impossibly, still into this awkward mess of a guy who once screamed over a spider the size of a quarter.

"Hey," she said, giving me a wave.

"Hey," I managed, sliding into the booth. "You look... like... wow."

Nailed it.

She laughed. "You clean up okay too."

We ordered. I tried to pick something that sounded fancy without needing a pronunciation guide. I went with the "Poulet Glacé aux Herbes" and prayed it wasn't just expensive chicken nuggets.

As we waited, the Happiness System pinged me again, smug as ever:

[New Task: Maintain 30 Minutes of Smooth Conversation Without Mentioning Anime, Your Dog's Pooping Habits, or That Time You Got Stuck in a Swing]

[Reward: $500]

[Timer Starts... NOW.]

Okay. Okay okay okay. I could do this.

"Funny thing," Mia said, sipping her drink, "you were acting all twitchy the other day—was it really just memes?"

I choked on my water.

The system buzzed again:

[Warning: Critical Embarrassment Level Approaching!]

[Emergency Boost: Activate Social Save?]

[Spend $100 of Happiness Funds to Instantly Reframe Conversation?]

YES. YES PLEASE.

I blinked, and just like that, words started flowing out of me like I was a smooth-talking demigod.

"Honestly? I panicked," I admitted. "It was one of those group chats full of nonsense and links to places that steal your soul and probably your credit card."

Mia laughed, setting her drink down. "So... not memes?"

"Definitely not memes."

She leaned closer, her grin wicked. "Good to know you're not a liar. Just an idiot."

"Exactly," I said, toasting with my water like a doofus. "One very honest idiot."

[Task Progress: 12 Minutes Remaining… Charisma +5 Boost Active]

[Mia's Happiness Level: GENUINE AMUSEMENT]

[Warning: Incoming Flirt Opportunity Detected]

She reached across the table and tapped my hand lightly.

"I like that you're weird," she said. "It makes me feel like I don't have to pretend."

I blinked.

She smiled wider. "I'm serious. So far, this is the best date I've been on in, like, ever. Even if you did nearly drop your phone into the bread basket when the waiter showed up."

I glanced down. Yep. It was dangerously close to a butter-drenched fate.

[Bonus Task: Don't Drop Your New Phone Into Butter]

[Reward: Dignity Preserved]

I scooted the Pearl Nova away and chuckled.

"Well, just wait until dessert. That's when I really shine."

"Oh?" she said. "Are you a secret cake connoisseur?"

"No," I said seriously. "But I once ate an entire cheesecake in one sitting and saw God."

We both cracked up so hard the people at the next table side-eyed us.

[Task Complete: 30 Minutes of Smooth Conversation]

[Reward Collected: +$500]

[Happiness Level: WARM & FUZZY]

[Mystery Bonus Unlocked: "LUCKY DATE MODE" - Better odds of everything going your way for the next 24 hours!]

As our entrees arrived and the candles flickered softly between us, I sat back in my seat, feeling—dare I say it—content.

Mia was still smiling.

The food was incredible.

And the Happiness System wasn't being too much of a troll.

For once... I wasn't crashing and burning.

I was actually doing okay.

Maybe even... winning.

The cheesecake glistened under the soft candlelight like it knew it was the star of the show. Mia leaned in dramatically, inspecting it with the reverence of an art critic.

"This…" she whispered, "looks illegal."

"I hope it is," I said solemnly. "If cheesecake isn't a crime, then what's even the point of society?"

She giggled and took the first bite.

And then—she closed her eyes.

Now listen. I'm not saying time stopped. I'm just saying, for a second, it was like the entire restaurant faded into the background and all that existed was Mia and one bite of cheesecake.

I took a bite too.

It was like being kissed on the soul by a sugary angel.

We both stared at each other, jaws slack.

"Okay," Mia finally said, "I wasn't gonna say it... but I think I just fell in love."

"With me?" I asked hopefully.

"With the cheesecake," she deadpanned. Then smirked. "But you're not doing too bad either."

And there it was again—that glowy, warm feeling. Like maybe I wasn't just someone she was humoring. Maybe I was someone she was starting to actually, genuinely like.

Ping!

The Happiness System had the grace of a drunk party crasher.

[NEW TASK: Ask Her Something Deep. Not Too Creepy. Just Enough To Show You Have Emotions.]

[Reward: $800 + Bonus Emotional Intelligence Points]

[Warning: Saying "What's your trauma?" does NOT count.]

Alright, System. Chill.

I sipped my water, stalling like a champ.

"So…" I said, trying to summon my inner romantic philosopher. "What's something... I wouldn't guess about you? Something real."

Mia raised an eyebrow, surprised. She swirled her spoon through the whipped cream, quiet for a second.

"Hmm. Okay. Real answer?" she said softly. "I used to hate silence."

That wasn't what I expected. I leaned in.

"Yeah?"

She nodded. "I had a lot of noise growing up. Arguing, chaos... the kind of stuff that made you want to put on headphones and never take them off. So when I finally moved out, silence freaked me out. Made me feel like something bad was about to happen."

She looked up at me.

"But lately… it doesn't scare me as much. Like right now. It's quiet. And I'm good with that."

I was pretty sure my heart did a tiny backflip.

[EMOTIONAL MOMENT ACHIEVED]

[Reward: $800 + "Emotionally Aware King" Badge (Level 1)]

[Mia's Happiness Level: Tender, Vulnerable, Trusting]

I swallowed the lump in my throat and smiled.

"I'm glad you told me that," I said. "And hey... you can be as loud or as quiet as you want around me."

She smiled back.

And then...

[New Task: Go For The Hand-Hold. Don't Overthink It.]

[Reward: $1,000]

Okay, System. For once, I agree with you.

I reached out slowly, letting my fingers brush hers on the table. She didn't pull away. She actually linked her pinky with mine like some kind of rom-com goddess.

The rest of dessert was soft smiles and playful banter.

We didn't rush.

We didn't have to.

And when we finally stepped outside into the cool night air, I felt like the world had tilted just a little in my favor.

The Happiness System chimed in like a proud parent:

[Major Milestone Unlocked: First Successful Date!]

[Reward: $2,500 + Relationship Progress Boost]

[New Title Unlocked: Hopeful Romantic]

[Next Task Incoming…]

My phone buzzed again. New task. New chaos. But I was ready.

Because this time?

I wasn't facing it alone.
