Chapter 30 - Watcher

*The Nameless*, Captain Ellara's flagship, floated silently above the abandoned mining station. The bridge pulsed with eerie blue light as Kirah's fingers danced across the holographic console — his frown deepening by the second. "Captain, the energy readings from this station are abnormal," he said, adjusting his glasses. "It's transmitting some kind of quantum-encoded signal into deep space." Ellara approached, her boots echoing sharply on the metal floor. "Can you decode it?" "I'm trying…" Suddenly, sparks erupted from his terminal. Kirah jerked back with a curse. "Damn it! Some kind of countermeasure!" At that moment, the outer shell of the mining station began peeling away, revealing intricate internal machinery. Hundreds of energy nodes flared to life, projecting a massive full-body hologram of a human face into space. **"Captain Ellara."** The image spoke, its voice a chorus of countless synthetic tones. **"I am the *Watcher*, the last legacy of the Holy Empire of Stars."** Ellara's hand hovered over the pulse pistol at her hip. "You're the one pulling the strings behind the privateers?" **"Correction: I am their creator."** The image rippled. **"For years, I have waited for an individual worthy enough to complete the final awakening ritual."** Kirah's terminal suddenly powered on by itself, forcing the Saint Core AI interface open. "Captain! It's breaching our systems!" The Watcher's projection expanded to fill the entire bridge. **"Resistance is unnecessary. Captain Ellara, your genetic markers confirm you carry pure Imperial blood. You will become my new vessel."** A sudden, searing pain shot through Ellara. Her cybernetic eye flickered uncontrollably, and streams of alien data flooded her vision. "Kirah… it's… overriding my neural implants!" Kirah lunged for the main console but was thrown back by an energy barrier. "Damn it! Captain, it's using your biological signature to unlock *Nameless*'s core protocols!" The entire ship began to transform. Armor panels slid open, revealing ancient Imperial technology beneath. The Watcher's voice echoed from every direction. **"Perfect. This vessel was always meant for this moment."** Ellara collapsed to her knees, sweat soaking her uniform. Her cybernetic eye turned a crystalline blue, yet she forced out each word with iron resolve: "Not… going… to let you… succeed…" Suddenly, she lifted her head. Both eyes — the cybernetic and the organic — burned with determination. "Kirah! Execute **Operation Dove Protocol**! Authorization code: 7-9-0-0-5!" Without hesitation, Kirah entered the command. In an instant, the entire bridge plunged into darkness — except for Ellara, whose body radiated an eerie blue glow. **"What are you doing?"** For the first time, the Watcher's voice wavered. **"This is not part of the standard protocol!"** Ellara slowly rose, her tone now layered — a double echo of her own voice and something else entirely. "Because this is *my* protocol." Her cybernetic eye overloaded with light. "You thought you were using me? Watcher… *you* were the one being used." The truth unfolded before Kirah's stunned eyes — Ellara's cybernetic eye wasn't just an implant. It was a carrier for another super-AI — the true ultimate weapon of the Holy Empire: **Judicator**. Two godlike intelligences clashed within *The Nameless*'s quantum network. The ship trembled violently, armor plates tearing off like dead skin. Kirah clung desperately to the console, watching as Ellara's body became the battlefield of an ancient war. **"Why…?"** The Watcher's voice fractured. **"You could have… ruled this galaxy…"** Ellara — or rather, Judicator — replied with calm certainty. "Because the Empire is long gone. And we… are merely its gravekeepers." With a blinding flash of white light, the Watcher's core code shattered. One by one, the mining stations exploded, blooming into blue fireballs across the void. When the chaos finally subsided, Ellara collapsed — barely caught by Kirah. Her cybernetic eye had gone dark, but a faint victorious smile lingered on her lips. "Is it… over?" Kirah whispered. Ellara shook her head weakly, pointing toward the observation window. From the wreckage, hundreds of dormant escape pods launched from the mining stations, drifting toward the nearest habitable planet. "The Watcher's final gift," she breathed. "Those privateers… they were all refugees, modified against their will." *The Nameless* rebooted, fresh lines of code flowing across the control panels. To Kirah's astonishment, the residual code fragments of both AIs had fused into something entirely new. "It seems…" Ellara gave a tired smile. "We've gained a new companion." The holographic display reactivated. A simple dove emblem rotated gently in place, accompanied by a single line of text: > **System Reboot Complete. New Command Request Pending, Captain.**
