Episode 7: "Cracks in the Calm"
The air had changed.
Not in a way you could see—but the wind carried whispers now. Leaves rustled with caution. The birds that once sang at dawn perched silently on rooftops.
Kael noticed. He always noticed.

Morning Routine
Rurik's workshop echoed with hammer strikes. Sparks flew from the anvil as Kael worked beside the forge, sleeves rolled, hands steady. His frame had grown stronger over the years—lean but powerful, built through labor, not luxury.
Mira brought water. "You've been quiet lately," she said softly.
Kael gave a small smile. "Just listening."
"To what?"
"…Everything."
Mira's brow creased, but she said no more. She had long learned Kael spoke more through silence than words.

Lyra's Glimpse
Near the edge of the stream, Lyra knelt, fingers trailing in the water. The stream shimmered strangely where she touched it—rippling patterns, like frost blooming in reverse.
She frowned.
"Again…" she whispered.
Behind her, wildflowers curled toward her shadow, drawn as if by instinct.
Kael watched from afar, hidden behind trees. He saw it—how nature leaned toward her. How even the mist clung to her longer than it should.
She was changing.
And she didn't know it yet.

The Stranger Returns
Later that evening, as twilight painted the sky in oranges and violets, the cloaked man returned.
This time, he did not just watch.
He entered the village tavern.
Kael followed, quiet as wind.
The man sat alone, untouched ale in front of him. His hood still drawn. Villagers whispered and avoided his gaze.
Kael sat nearby, pretending not to look.
The man spoke—quietly, but clearly. "This land hums with an old song."
Kael tensed.
"Something ancient stirs," the man continued, not looking at him. "It draws seekers. And hunters."
Kael remained still.
The man stood. "If you truly wish to stay hidden… you should quiet the storm within you."
Their eyes met once more—his were silver, like starlight on cold steel.
Then he left.
Kael exhaled, not realizing he had held his breath.

Lyra's Warning
That night, Lyra knocked on Kael's window, eyes wide. "Something's wrong," she said, out of breath.
Kael opened the door instantly.
She held out a flower.
Or what was left of it.
Black veins ran through its petals like rot. "I found it near the stream. And…"
She showed him her arm.
A faint frost pattern was blooming across her skin, pulsing softly.
Kael stared, heart sinking. It had begun.
He reached out, gently closing his hand over hers. "We'll figure this out."
Lyra looked into his eyes. "Kael… what am I?"
He didn't answer.

Elsewhere: Eyes in the Dark
Far from the village, across blackened fields and dead rivers, a council of cloaked figures stood beneath a moonless sky.
"She is awakening," one rasped.
"And the Guardian?" asked another.
"Hiding. But not for long."
They turned toward the east—toward the village where a forgotten power still slept in human skin.
