Chapter 23: Beyond the Threshold
The silence in Alpha-9's command module was so thick it felt tangible. The voice from the speakers had faded, but its words-"Enter, or vanish"-still echoed in Lia's mind. She stared at the blank screens, trying to process what she had just seen: a network of light and shadow, pulsing like the heart of an unknown creature. Her hands trembled, but she clenched them into fists to hide her weakness from Theo and Ren.
"It's a threat," Theo said, his voice hoarse with tension. "They lured us here, and now we're trapped. We need to get out while we still can."
"Get out?" Lia turned to him sharply. "Did you see what's happening to the space around us? We don't even know where the exit is, Theo. And if we turn back, we might never find out what this was."
"And if we go forward, we might not survive!" he roared, stepping toward her. "Are you willing to sacrifice us for your obsession with this signal?"
Ren, who had been silent, stepped between them, his prosthetic arm emitting a soft hum.
"Enough," he said, his tone calm but firm. "Arguing won't help. The scanners show the anomaly-or whatever it is-is starting to contract. If we don't decide in the next ten minutes, the ship might not withstand the pressure."
Lia looked at Ren, then at Theo. Their faces, lit by the dim glow of emergency lights, were a mix of fear and exhaustion. She knew they were right-the risk was immense. But something inside her, the same instinct that had driven her to take this mission, screamed that the answers lay beyond the threshold.
"Fine," she said finally. "We'll try to establish contact. Ren, can you reconfigure the transmitter to send a response signal?"
Ren nodded and returned to the console, his fingers flying over the keys. Theo shook his head but didn't argue, instead checking the ship's defense systems. Lia activated the audio system and, taking a deep breath, spoke:
"This is the crew of Alpha-9. We received your signal. Identify yourself. What do you want?"
The seconds dragged on painfully. The ship jolted again, and a worrying crack echoed from somewhere in the hull. Lia thought there would be no response when the speakers crackled to life. The voice was the same, but now it carried a strange, almost human inflection:
"I am Echo. I am memory. Enter the network, and you will see the beginning. Refuse-and become part of the void."
"Echo?" Theo whispered, his eyes widening. "Is this an AI? Or... something worse?"
Ren looked up from the console, his face tense.
"The signal is coming from the center of that structure. If we want to enter, we need to steer the ship directly into it. But I can't guarantee we'll stay intact."
Lia felt her heart constrict. She glanced at the screen, where the image of the network reappeared-now closer, its light pulsing as if beckoning them. It was a choice between the unknown and annihilation. And she knew the decision was hers.
"Full speed ahead," she said quietly but firmly. "We're going into the network."
Theo opened his mouth to protest but fell silent under her gaze. Ren merely nodded and began inputting coordinates. Alpha-9 shuddered, its engines roaring, as the ship surged toward the glowing web that seemed ready to swallow them whole.
