There was an undeniable tension in the air when they reached the Queen's quarters. The Queen simply paced around the room, something she hardly ever did, while ignoring Ember.

Meanwhile, Ember, whose body was on fire, looked at Syria as if begging for some advice on how to speak to the Queen. As usual, the head handmaiden wore a sore expression that mirrored the tension in the room.

When she could no longer take the silence, Ember cleared her throat. "You've all but declared an open war to the king, mother. I thought you were bidding your time before we made a public move. Confronting Father like this is…."

Furious sapphire blue eyes rested on her, cutting her short of finishing her statement. "Well, I suppose I should have allowed your father to murder you under the disguise of punishing you. Do you truly think you could have taken fifty whips."
