Chapter 28 - Chapter: The Thing That Unwrites

The first city did not burn.

It dimmed.

Rethmere was small—an eastern trade settlement built along a stabilized ley fork. Nothing strategic. Nothing symbolic.

It vanished anyway.

Not explosively.

Not violently.

Witnesses in nearby towns described it as a "fold."

The skyline blurred.

Sound muted.

Light thinned.

And then—

Absence.

Where buildings had stood was now open plain.

Grass untouched.

Stone foundations gone.

People gone.

Even memory faltered.

Reports conflicted within hours.

Maps contradicted each other.

Records disagreed.

Only one thing remained consistent:

The spire nearest Rethmere had dimmed completely.

Shielding had failed.

Mystara Reacts

The Tower bells did not ring.

They were silent by order.

Panic was more dangerous than fracture.

But the Circle chamber trembled with tension.

"This is not void activity," Third Seat said.

"It bypassed the lattice entirely," Fifth added.

Ninth's voice was tight. "How many casualties?"

Ardyn answered quietly.

"We cannot confirm."

A heavier silence followed.

Because they all understood what that meant.

If something could erase not only matter—

But record—

Then the Empire faced something unprecedented.

Vahn Feels It

Vahn was not in the chamber.

He was on the highest observatory when it happened.

The moment Rethmere vanished—

The lattice screamed.

Not in sound.

In collapse.

A node had been removed.

Not destroyed.

Removed.

He dropped to one knee as the strand in his palm burned white-hot.

Kayden caught him before he hit stone.

"What happened?"

"Something cut it out," Vahn said through clenched teeth.

The Eleventh Seat chamber flared violently below them.

For the first time—

The Mouth reacted with fear.

The Name Surfaces

Deep beneath the Academy, in archives older than the Circle, Ardyn unlocked sealed pre-Founding records.

Documents labeled myth.

Apocrypha.

Forbidden cosmology.

Third Seat read the translation slowly.

"Before the Source stabilized reality… there were forces that rejected coherence."

Ninth frowned. "Chaos entities?"

Third shook their head.

"Not chaos."

A pause.

"Correction against existence."

Another page turned.

A single word repeated in ancient script.

Axiom Null.

Fifth spoke softly.

"The Unwriter."

Ardyn closed the archive.

"It predates convergence."

Silence thickened.

"If it has noticed the lattice stabilization…" Third began.

"It will view it as deviation," Ardyn finished.

A Presence in Orbit

That night, Mystara's upper wards activated automatically.

Not against invasion.

Against subtraction.

The sky above no longer simply dimmed.

It warped.

Stars did not blink out randomly.

They disappeared in geometric patterns.

Measured.

Precise.

Something vast moved beyond the veil of the Source, its presence too immense to manifest directly.

Where it passed—

Reality thinned.

The Mouth pulsed in distress below the Academy.

It had never been designed for this.

It regulated imbalance within existence.

Not something that rejected existence entirely.

Confrontation

Vahn entered the Eleventh chamber alone.

The nexus flared the moment he stepped inside.

The lattice projected around him instinctively.

He did not summon it.

It reached for him.

"What is it?" he demanded into the resonance field.

This time—

The system answered.

Not with images of history.

But with contrast.

The Source weaved.

The Mouth regulated.

The Bridge connected.

And beyond it all—

Something that removed weave entirely.

Not hunger.

Not silence.

Erasure.

The pattern formed a name across the lattice.

Axiom Null .

It was not a creature.

Not in the way the Void had been.

It was principle.

A cosmic failsafe against unstable realities.

And Vahn had just stabilized one.

The strand in his palm pulsed.

The lattice shifted.

And for the first time—

The Mouth did not invite him.

It deferred.

The implication was terrifying.

The regulator system could not counter Null Axiom.

But the Bridge—

Might.

The Sky Breaks

Without warning, the upper atmosphere split.

Not fractured.

Excised.

A perfect circular absence opened above Mystara.

No light.

No stars.

No distortion.

Just nothing.

The Circle materialized instantly atop the Tower.

Awakeners across the Academy braced for impact.

But nothing fell.

Instead—

A line descended.

Not beam.

Not lightning.

A vertical subtraction.

It touched the outer defensive ring—

And that section of the ring ceased to exist.

Cleanly.

No debris.

No explosion.

Gone.

Gasps rippled across the Tower.

Ninth Seat launched a concentrated convergence strike—

It passed through the absence.

And disappeared.

Erased mid-cast.

Third whispered:

"It's not attacking."

Vahn stepped onto the platform.

"It's correcting."

The vertical absence shifted slightly—

And aligned with him.

The strand in his palm ignited.

The lattice roared behind his eyes.

Across the continent, every stabilized spire flared in unison.

Not offensively.

Synchronizing.

Vahn looked up into the impossible void above.

And felt something focus.

Not angry.

Not emotional.

Evaluating.

"Correction detected," a voice reverberated—not through air, but through structure itself.

"Bridge anomaly confirmed."

The Circle froze.

Kayden could barely breathe.

Vahn stepped forward.

"I stabilized imbalance," he said.

The void did not respond immediately.

Then—

"Deviation from collapse threshold."

A pause.

"System interference unauthorized."

The strand in Vahn's palm pulsed back.

"I authorize it."

Silence.

Cosmic.

Heavy.

Then—

"Authority unrecognized."

The absence widened.

And for the first time—

Vahn felt something the Mouth had never made him feel.

Not hunger.

Not silence.

Threat.

End of Chapter

Above Mystara—

Null Axiom began its descent.

Not to destroy.

To subtract.

And this time—

It had identified the anomaly.

The Bridge.

Full cosmic confrontation arc.
