Chapter 40 - Chapter :The Eye Beneath Mystara

The eye opened.

Mystara Academy stopped moving.

For one impossible second, every sound vanished.

The bells.

The wind.

The shouting students above.

Even the hum of the Source.

Silence swallowed everything.

Then the eye blinked.

The entire Academy shook.

Vahn stood at the edge of the fractured chamber, lightning crawling across his arms.

He had fought monsters.

He had fought the Circle.

He had fought reflections of himself.

He had faced the Void.

But this was different.

Because the thing beneath Mystara wasn't attacking.

It was looking at him.

And somehow—

it knew his name.

"Vahn Romanoff."

The voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

The words appeared inside his mind.

Vahn's breathing stopped.

Leslie immediately grabbed his arm.

"Don't answer it."

"Why?"

"Because it isn't speaking to you."

Vahn looked at her.

"It is speaking through you."

Leslie's expression changed.

For the first time since he'd found her again—

she looked terrified.

The Buried City

The floor beneath them collapsed.

Vahn, Leslie, Auren, and the seven Creators fell through the darkness.

But they didn't fall far.

They landed on stone.

Ancient stone.

Vahn stood slowly.

There was no Mystara beneath them anymore.

Instead, an enormous city stretched into the darkness.

Buildings rose from black crystal.

Bridges crossed empty chasms.

Massive statues stood along the streets.

Each statue had no face.

But all of them were holding the same symbol.

A circle divided into eleven segments.

Vahn stared.

"The Eleventh Seat."

Leslie shook her head.

"No."

She pointed toward the center.

"The Eleventh Seat was named after this."

Vahn looked at her.

"What is this place?"

Auren answered.

"The first city."

"First city of what?"

"Humanity."

Vahn turned.

Auren continued.

"Before Mystara."

"Before the Empire."

"Before the Five Divisions."

"Before the Circle."

He looked toward the enormous city.

"This was where humans first touched the Source."

The Forgotten Eleventh

Vahn walked forward.

Every step produced a faint echo.

The city seemed abandoned.

But it didn't feel dead.

It felt asleep.

He approached one of the statues.

Its hand was carved into the shape of a lightning bolt.

Vahn touched it.

The statue opened its eyes.

A memory flooded into him.

He saw thousands of people standing beneath a golden sky.

No divisions.

No sigils.

No ranks.

No bloodline restrictions.

Everyone was using different forms of the Source.

A woman created fire.

A child shaped water.

An old man bent gravity.

A young warrior summoned lightning.

Nobody was divided.

They learned together.

They fought together.

They created together.

Then the sky darkened.

Something descended.

Not a creature.

Not an army.

A concept.

A perfect geometric shape appeared above the city.

The Axiom.

The first law.

Vahn watched as the people gathered around it.

They weren't worshipping it.

They were negotiating with it.

Then everything changed.

The vision shattered.

Vahn stumbled backward.

Leslie caught him.

"What did you see?"

"The beginning."

Auren's expression darkened.

"No."

He looked toward the distant city.

"You saw the lie."

The First Betrayal

Auren walked past them.

"The Creators weren't always the Creators."

Vahn followed.

"What were they?"

"Teachers."

"Teachers?"

"They taught humanity how to use the Source."

"Then why did they divide it?"

Auren stopped.

"Because humanity learned too quickly."

Vahn waited.

Auren continued.

"They discovered that the Source had no ceiling."

Vahn's eyes narrowed.

"Unlimited power."

"Not power."

Auren corrected him.

"Possibility."

He pointed toward the city.

"Every human could become anything."

"Every affinity could be learned."

"Every discipline could be combined."

"Death could be delayed."

"Memory could be rewritten."

"Time could be bent."

"Even the Void could be understood."

Vahn looked toward Leslie.

"And that scared them."

"Not immediately."

Leslie stepped closer.

"They became afraid of what humanity might become."

Auren nodded.

"So they created limits."

The Five Thrones

Five enormous structures emerged from the darkness.

Vahn recognized them immediately.

A blade.

A tome.

A beast.

An hourglass.

A radiant spear.

The original forms of the Five Divisions.

But they were not schools.

They were thrones.

Each throne was occupied by a human figure.

The first held a sword.

The second held a book.

The third rested beside a massive beast.

The fourth stood within frozen time.

The fifth wore armor made of light.

Vahn stared.

"The first division leaders."

Auren nodded.

"They were chosen."

"By the Creators?"

"Yes."

"What happened to them?"

Auren looked away.

"They rebelled."

Vahn's eyes widened.

"The first division leaders rebelled against the Creators?"

"Because they realized the truth."

Leslie finished the sentence.

"The divisions weren't meant to protect humanity."

"They were meant to control it."

The five thrones cracked.

The figures disappeared.

And behind them—

something else appeared.

An empty throne.

Sixth.

Vahn stared at it.

"There were six."

Auren's face became unreadable.

"There were always six."

The Missing Division

Vahn approached the sixth throne.

It had no symbol.

No weapon.

No color.

No name.

Only an empty space.

"Why was it erased?"

Auren looked directly at him.

"Because it wasn't a division."

Vahn felt the Source around him tighten.

"What was it?"

Auren answered:

"Freedom."

Silence.

The word seemed almost insignificant.

Yet the entire city reacted.

Every ancient crystal lit up.

The faceless statues turned toward Vahn.

The Creators suddenly moved.

One raised its hand.

"Stop."

Vahn looked back.

The Creator's voice was different.

Not emotionless anymore.

Angry.

"You will not restore the Sixth."

Vahn smiled.

"Why?"

"Because it was never meant to exist."

Auren laughed.

"That's what you said about me."

The Creator turned toward him.

"You were a mistake."

"And yet I'm still here."

The Thing Below

The ground began shaking again.

The enormous eye beneath the city opened wider.

A second eye appeared.

Then a third.

Vahn realized something horrifying.

They weren't eyes.

They were windows.

Through them, he could see different places.

The Empire.

The ocean.

The mountains.

Mystara.

The Void.

The stars.

All of them were connected.

Something enormous existed beneath reality.

Not inside the world.

Underneath it.

Vahn whispered:

"What is that?"

Leslie answered.

"The reason the Creators divided the Source."

Auren looked toward the Creators.

"And the reason they were terrified of the Sixth."

Vahn turned.

"Tell me."

Auren's face became grim.

"The Source isn't the oldest thing."

Vahn's stomach tightened.

"Then what is?"

Auren pointed downward.

"The possibility of everything that could exist."

The First Unbound

Auren stepped toward Vahn.

"You asked me what I am."

Vahn nodded.

Auren placed his hand against his chest.

"I wasn't the first Unbound."

Vahn frowned.

"What?"

"I was the first one who survived."

Auren looked at Leslie.

"She wasn't the first vessel either."

Leslie's expression hardened.

Auren looked back at Vahn.

"Your sister wasn't chosen because she was special."

Vahn's eyes narrowed.

"Then why?"

"Because the Eleventh Seat needed someone who could remember."

"Remember what?"

Auren smiled sadly.

"You."

Vahn froze.

"What?"

Auren's voice dropped.

"Leslie wasn't waiting for you to return."

"She was waiting for you to be born."

Vahn stared at his sister.

Leslie didn't deny it.

The pendant around Vahn's neck suddenly cracked.

A thin line appeared across its surface.

Then—

it opened.

Inside was a fragment of crystal.

Not blue.

Not black.

Not white.

Colorless.

Vahn touched it.

The entire city vanished.

Before Vahn

He saw a child.

A boy.

Standing inside the buried city.

The boy looked exactly like him.

But younger.

Much younger.

He was holding Leslie's hand.

Vahn's heart stopped.

Leslie was there too.

But she was younger.

Far younger.

They were standing before the Eleventh Seat.

A voice spoke.

"The cycle must continue."

Young Leslie cried.

"I don't want him to forget me."

Another voice answered.

"He must."

Young Vahn looked up.

"Where are we going?"

Leslie knelt before him.

"Somewhere safe."

"Will you come?"

She smiled through tears.

"Always."

The memory shattered.

Vahn returned to the buried city.

His knees buckled.

Leslie caught him.

"You knew me."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Before Mystara."

"Before the Academy."

"Before the Ceremony."

She nodded.

"You don't remember because I asked them to take your memories."

Vahn stared at her.

"Why?"

Leslie whispered:

"Because you were the one thing they couldn't control."

The Creators Attack

The seven Creators moved.

All at once.

Vahn barely raised his hand before seven beams of white energy struck the ground.

Auren grabbed Leslie.

They disappeared behind a pillar.

Vahn remained.

The Weaveborn awakened.

Lightning exploded around him.

But the Creators weren't attacking his body.

They were attacking his connections.

One by one, his affinities began separating.

Fire disappeared.

Then wind.

Then water.

Then shadow.

His Source Weave started collapsing.

Vahn gritted his teeth.

"No."

The Creators spoke together.

"Return to one."

Vahn's eyes burned.

"Never."

He reached for the missing threads.

But they were gone.

Then he heard something.

A voice.

Not Leslie.

Not Auren.

Not the Creators.

His own.

From somewhere deep inside him.

You don't need the threads.

Vahn froze.

The lightning around him vanished.

The Creators stopped.

Vahn closed his eyes.

He finally understood.

The Source Weave wasn't the power.

It was only the language.

He didn't need the affinities to connect.

He needed himself.

Vahn opened his eyes.

The Weave returned.

But this time—

there were no separate threads.

There was only one.

A single line of impossible light.

The Creator stepped backward.

"Impossible."

Vahn raised his hand.

"You're right."

The line became a blade.

"Because you never taught me this."

He struck the ground.

The entire buried city awakened.

Every statue opened its eyes.

Every ancient crystal ignited.

Every forgotten throne began resonating.

And from the empty Sixth Throne—

a voice spoke.

"The Unbound has returned."

The Creators froze.

Auren smiled.

Leslie closed her eyes.

And beneath the city, the enormous thing began to rise.

Vahn looked down.

For the first time—

he wasn't afraid.

He was furious.

Because now he remembered.

He remembered the promise his sister had made when he was a child.

Always.

And he remembered something else.

Something the Creators had desperately tried to erase.

A name.

A name older than the Five Divisions.

Older than the Circle.

Older than Axiom Null.

A name belonging to the force beneath the world.

Vahn whispered it.

"Elyndra."

The buried city screamed.

And the thing beneath Mystara finally woke.
