The figure stepped out of the black star.
No portal opened.
No spell was cast.
Reality simply made room for him.
He landed on the broken tower above the buried city.
Vahn stared upward.
Same face.
Same height.
Same eyes.
Even the faint scar across the left wrist was there.
But something was different.
The man smiled with a familiarity that made Vahn uncomfortable.
"Hello, Vahn."
Vahn's hand tightened.
"Who are you?"
The stranger looked almost amused.
"You already know."
"No."
"You just don't remember."
Auren moved in front of Vahn.
"Stay behind me."
The stranger laughed.
"Auren."
Auren froze.
"You remember me?"
"I remember all of you."
The stranger's gaze shifted to Leslie.
"The Eleventh."
Then to the seven empty spaces where the Creators had disappeared.
"The architects."
Finally, back to Vahn.
"And you."
His smile disappeared.
"The mistake that survived."
The Name Before Romanoff
Vahn stepped forward.
"What's your name?"
The stranger didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward the blank circle floating above Mystara.
"You gave yourself a surname."
Vahn frowned.
"What?"
"Romanoff."
The stranger tilted his head.
"You weren't born with it."
Leslie's face changed.
Vahn looked at her.
"Leslie?"
She said nothing.
The stranger smiled.
"Ask her."
Vahn's voice hardened.
"Leslie."
She finally looked at him.
"The name Romanoff belonged to our mother."
Vahn's expression froze.
"Our mother?"
"You were too young."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I promised her."
The stranger interrupted.
"She promised the wrong person."
Leslie turned sharply.
"Don't."
The stranger's eyes narrowed.
"You still protect him."
"Of course I do."
"You always did."
Vahn looked between them.
"How do you know my sister?"
The stranger answered:
"Because I was there when she found you."
The Child in the Chamber
The stranger raised his hand.
The air filled with light.
A memory appeared.
A small underground chamber.
A young Leslie stood beside an ancient machine.
In front of her was a child.
Vahn.
He was unconscious.
Barely breathing.
But there was something strange about him.
A colorless thread was wrapped around his heart.
Leslie touched it.
The thread pulsed.
The child opened his eyes.
"Leslie?"
She smiled.
"I'm here."
Behind her stood another person.
A man.
Older.
Wearing the same strange clothes as the stranger.
The man placed his hand on the machine.
"The transfer worked."
Young Leslie looked worried.
"Will he remember?"
"No."
"Will he ever?"
The man hesitated.
"If the Weave chooses him."
"And if it doesn't?"
The man looked at the sleeping child.
"Then he'll live an ordinary life."
The memory ended.
Vahn stared.
"Who was that?"
The stranger looked at him.
"Me."
The First Experiment
Vahn's pulse quickened.
"You were there when I was born?"
"Not born."
The stranger corrected him.
"Created."
The word hit harder than any spell.
Leslie immediately stepped forward.
"That's not true."
"It is."
"Vahn was born."
"He was."
The stranger looked at her.
"Then he died."
Silence.
Vahn's face went pale.
"What?"
Leslie's eyes filled with tears.
The stranger continued.
"Your original body survived for six minutes."
"Your Source signature was unstable."
"The Creators classified you as unusable."
"So they discarded you."
Vahn looked at his hands.
"Then what am I?"
The stranger answered quietly.
"The first successful human reconstruction."
Before the Five Divisions
Auren lowered his weapon.
"That's impossible."
The stranger looked at him.
"You were there."
Auren's expression changed.
"I remember."
Vahn looked at Auren.
"Remember what?"
Auren stared at the stranger.
"The First Experiment."
The stranger nodded.
"Before the divisions."
"Before the Circle."
"Before the Eleventh Seat."
"We tried to create a human who could survive direct contact with possibility."
Vahn understood.
"The Unbound."
"Not exactly."
The stranger stepped down from the tower.
"The Unbound wasn't a power."
"It was a compatibility."
Vahn frowned.
"Compatibility with what?"
The stranger looked toward the black star.
"Everything."
Why Vahn Was Different
The stranger approached.
Vahn didn't move.
"You were the first person whose existence didn't collapse when exposed to the full Source."
"That's why your affinity is lightning."
Vahn frowned.
"Lightning?"
"Lightning is the fastest path between opposites."
"Positive and negative."
"Creation and destruction."
"Source and Void."
"Life and death."
The stranger pointed toward Vahn's chest.
"You were built to connect things that should never have touched."
Vahn looked down.
The colorless spark returned.
The stranger smiled.
"And you did something none of us expected."
"What?"
"You became human."
The Original Vahn
Vahn stared at him.
"Then who are you?"
The stranger finally answered.
"I was the first attempt."
Auren whispered:
"The prototype."
The stranger nodded.
"They called me V-01."
Vahn's eyes narrowed.
"Vahn."
"Not originally."
The stranger looked toward the horizon.
"That name came later."
"What was your name?"
He looked back.
"Nothing."
The answer was strangely painful.
"I was a number."
"I was a test."
"I was a weapon."
"I was the first thing they created that could touch possibility."
"Then I asked a question."
Vahn waited.
"What?"
The stranger smiled.
"Why?"
The First Rebellion
The buried city shifted.
Memories appeared everywhere.
The prototype Vahn walking through ancient halls.
Scientists observing him.
Creators monitoring him.
The first Source experiments.
The first attempts to connect all affinities.
The first failures.
People dying.
Worlds collapsing.
The prototype standing alone.
Then—
he turned against them.
"I refused."
Vahn watched.
"What did you refuse?"
"To become their tool."
The prototype destroyed the laboratory.
The first Source Weave was born from the explosion.
The Creators tried to erase him.
They failed.
Auren joined him.
Then others.
For a brief moment—
humanity was free.
Until the Creators created the Five Divisions.
Vahn watched the history unfold.
Wars.
Propaganda.
Memory manipulation.
Bloodline restrictions.
The Circle.
The Eleventh Seat.
Everything had been built to prevent another Unbound from appearing.
Then Leslie appeared.
And found Vahn.
The Choice Leslie Made
Vahn turned toward his sister.
"You knew."
Leslie nodded.
"I knew some of it."
"How much?"
"Enough to know they would come for you."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because every time you remembered, they found you."
Vahn's expression softened.
"You protected me."
"I tried."
The stranger interrupted.
"You did more than that."
Leslie looked at him.
"You broke the cycle."
He pointed toward Vahn.
"You gave the First Experiment something none of us could."
Vahn looked at Leslie.
"What?"
"A family."
The Forgotten Memory
The stranger touched Vahn's forehead.
Leslie shouted:
"Don't!"
Too late.
The world disappeared.
Vahn stood in a field.
A normal field.
Blue sky.
Green grass.
No Source.
No Void.
No Creators.
No ancient laws.
A younger version of himself was running through the grass.
Leslie was chasing him.
"Vahn! Slow down!"
The child laughed.
"You can't catch me!"
She finally grabbed him.
Both fell into the grass.
Vahn laughed.
Leslie smiled.
It was ordinary.
Perfectly ordinary.
Then the memory changed.
The sky darkened.
Leslie stood before a door.
She was crying.
Young Vahn held her hand.
"Are you coming?"
She knelt.
"Someday."
"When?"
"When you're ready."
The door opened.
Young Vahn walked through.
Before leaving, he turned.
"Promise?"
Leslie whispered:
"Always."
The memory shattered.
Vahn returned.
Tears were running down his face.
He didn't wipe them.
"You erased this."
Leslie nodded.
"To save you."
The First Vahn watched silently.
Then he said:
"And that's where she made her greatest mistake."
The Price of Love
Vahn looked at him.
"What mistake?"
"She saved your life."
"She preserved your humanity."
"But she also prevented you from becoming what you were designed to become."
Vahn's expression hardened.
"And that's bad?"
"No."
The First Vahn smiled.
"That's why you're dangerous."
Vahn didn't understand.
The First Vahn continued.
"The Creators wanted a weapon."
"The Circle wanted a ruler."
"The Eleventh Seat wanted a judge."
"The Shadow wanted an invitation."
"But you..."
He stepped closer.
"You became something none of them planned for."
Vahn waited.
"A person who can choose without being told what the choices are."
The Real Enemy
The black star above them began shrinking.
The First Vahn looked upward.
"We don't have much time."
"For what?"
"The next arrival."
Auren's face tightened.
"Another Creator?"
"No."
"The Shadow?"
"No."
Leslie stepped forward.
"Then who?"
The First Vahn looked at her.
"The one who made the Creators."
Silence.
Vahn's expression changed.
"You said the Creators existed before the Source."
"They did."
"Then who created them?"
The First Vahn smiled faintly.
"That's the question."
The black star vanished.
The sky became completely clear.
For a moment, everything seemed peaceful.
Then—
every person in Mystara heard a voice.
Not inside their minds.
Not through the Source.
From the sky itself.
"Children."
Every awakened person froze.
"You have misunderstood your inheritance."
Vahn looked upward.
A single white symbol appeared.
It wasn't an Axiom.
It wasn't a Seat.
It wasn't a division.
It was a symbol Vahn had never seen.
Except—
he had.
In Leslie's first journal.
In the corner of every page.
Hidden beneath layers of ink.
The same symbol.
The First Vahn whispered:
"They found us."
The Empty Throne
Behind Vahn, the ruins of the Eleventh Seat began rebuilding themselves.
Stone rose.
Light gathered.
A throne formed.
But Leslie wasn't pulled toward it.
Instead—
Vahn was.
The throne recognized him.
He resisted.
"No."
The First Vahn shook his head.
"You don't understand."
"What?"
"It isn't choosing you."
Vahn stared.
"Then what is it doing?"
The First Vahn looked toward the throne.
"It's remembering you."
The throne opened.
Inside it was a single object.
A small pendant.
Identical to Leslie's.
But older.
Much older.
Vahn reached toward it.
The moment his fingers touched the pendant—
the entire world went silent.
Then a message appeared.
Not from Leslie.
Not from the Creators.
Not from Elyndra.
From whoever existed before them all.
Vahn Romanoff was never the name of the Unbound.
A second line appeared.
It was the name given to the last one.
Vahn's breathing stopped.
A third line appeared.
There were seven before him.
And then the final line.
Six are dead.
The pendant cracked.
The First Vahn looked directly into his eyes.
"The seventh..."
He pointed toward Vahn.
"...is standing in front of me."
Vahn stared at him.
"Then who am I?"
The First Vahn smiled.
And for the first time—
he looked afraid.
"That's what the next war is about."
Above Mystara, the sky began filling with seven enormous symbols.
Six were dark.
One was burning.
And the burning symbol—
was the same colorless light that lived inside Vahn.
The war had not been between Source and Void.
It had never been about the Creators.
It had never even been about Elyndra.
There had been seven Unbound.
And someone—
or something—
had been hunting them across realities.
The First Vahn looked toward the horizon.
"They're coming for the seventh."
Vahn raised his hand.
Lightning gathered.
"Let them come."
The First Vahn smiled.
"That's exactly what they want."
And somewhere beyond the stars—
six dead worlds opened their eyes.
