The morning sun poured through the window, dragging Logan out of a light sleep. He sat up at once, his eyes clear. Today wasn't a day to waste even a second.
He dressed quickly in the academy's dueling uniform, tightening the straps on his boots before grabbing his glaive and placing it on his shoulder.
Can't really pull this out of my space ring in front of thousands of people, he thought, smiling.
When he opened his door, the halls were already alive. Freshmen rushed past in groups, talking in excited voices that barely hid their nerves.
Logan walked calmly through them until he spotted Grant and Layla waiting near the stairwell. Robert, Thomas, and Ethan stood beside them, and Livia lingered at the back, veil low.
"There you are," Grant said, grinning. "I thought you'd oversleep."
Logan raised an eyebrow. "You think I'd risk that?"
Grant laughed and smacked his shoulder with one hand.
