According to Mystogan, Anima, the magic Edolas uses to draw magical power from Earthland, is activating more and more frequently.
Edolas's human king, Mystogan's father Faust, has a near-obsessive need for magic.
Edolas is a world where magic is constantly dwindling. To acquire magic, Faust repeatedly uses Anima, a hyperspace magic, to drain the magical life force from Earthland, converting it into magic crystals for Edolas.
Mystogan has been preventing Anima, thus preventing more casualties.
Lately, Anima's activations have become more frequent and larger in scale. Mystogan is becoming increasingly busy and strained.
Drake advised him to address the root of the problem.
Without dealing with the now-deranged Faust, stopping Anima repeatedly is futile.
Mystogan agreed, and they made a pact: Mystogan would find a way to enter Edolas through Anima, while Drake would assist Jellal in resolving Edolas's problems.
After their agreement, Mystogan left, and Drake prepared to return home.

"Gajeel, why are you sneaking around?"
After a while, Gajeel emerged from a corner, looking embarrassed.
Drake said, "Spit it out! I haven't got all day."
Gajeel became agitated, leaning closer. "Drake, don't you find this strange?"
Drake was confused. "Strange? What's strange?"
Gajeel looked despondent. "Fire Dragon has a cat, and even the newcomer has a white cat. We're all Dragon Slayers; how can we not have our own cats?"
Drake facepalmed. Who decided Dragon Slayers must have cats? Was Gajeel a closet cat person?
The original story mentioned Gajeel searching for a cat after seeing Wendy and Carla; he hadn't expected to ask Drake.
Seeing Gajeel's pitiful expression, Drake said, "Don't worry, you'll meet your cat soon enough!"
"Really?" Gajeel looked overjoyed and happily left.
Drake shook his head; his siblings were all quite troublesome.
After Wendy joined, things calmed down. Drake continued his studies and waited for news from Mystogan.
One day, while Drake was reading in the library, he heard a commotion outside, followed by the loud tolling of the large bell.
Magnolia's bell tower only tolls for emergencies; the urgent ringing indicated a serious situation.
Curious, Drake left the library for the main hall. However, he saw everyone smiling despite the alarm bells.
Only Lucy, Wendy, Carla, and Drake himself were puzzled.
"This way of ringing the bell…"
"Could it be…?"
"Gildarts is back!"
"Gildarts?" Wendy asked, confused.
Lucy, having heard the name before, explained to the newly joined Wendy, "Gildarts is Fairy Tail's strongest mage! I haven't met him yet either."
Lucy looked at the excited crowd. "I wonder why everyone is suddenly so excited."
Wendy nodded. "Yeah, it's like a festival, Carla."
The tsundere white cat crossed her arms. "Such a noisy guild."
Mirajane approached. "Their excitement is understandable; Gildarts hasn't been back for three years!"
"Three years! What was he doing?" Lucy pressed.
Mirajane replied, "Work! Above S-class missions are SS-class missions, and above those are 100-year missions—missions no one has completed in a century.
Gildarts completed a 100-year mission!"
Lucy, having completed an S-class mission, knew how dangerous they were, so she couldn't imagine a 100-year mission, two levels higher.
However, this made her even more curious about Gildarts.
Just then, Magnolia's town broadcast blared.
"Magnolia is entering Gildarts Mode. Please evacuate to designated areas. Repeat…"
Lucy was amazed by the existence of 100-year missions but puzzled by "Gildarts Mode."
Then Lucy witnessed a shocking sight.
Magnolia's buildings began to move, as if the entire city were cracking open. Rows of high walls rose, creating a road from outside Magnolia directly into town.
"What's going on here?"
Not only Lucy but Wendy was also shocked.
Mirajane explained, "Gildarts's magic can pulverize anything he touches; he accidentally destroys houses while walking."
Lucy, Fairy Tail's resident commentator, immediately quipped, "Just how absent-minded is that guy?! He actually remodeled the whole street for that?!"
Wendy, however, looked up in awe. "So amazing, Carla!"
Carla responded with a dismissive tone. "Yeah, an amazingly clumsy idiot."
"He's here!"
With Natsu's excited shout, Fairy Tail's strongest man appeared before them.
Gildarts looked like an ordinary middle-aged man, especially with his dazed expression—nothing like a mage far surpassing the Ten Wizard Saints.
Gildarts squinted, looking around, then said to Mirajane, "Um, little girl, is there a guild called Fairy Tail around here?"
Mirajane responded enthusiastically, "This is it! I'm Mirajane."
"Mira?" Gildarts finally recognized her, laughing. "You've changed so much! Say, did they renovate this place?"
"Gildarts, let's have a one-on-one fight!"
No need to guess who it was. Gildarts glanced at Natsu and casually said, "Natsu, is it? Long time no see."
As he spoke, Gildarts grabbed the charging Natsu, spun him around like a windmill, and tossed him onto the ceiling.
Drake narrowed his eyes; only a martial arts expert like Drake could appreciate the subtle skill Gildarts had just displayed.
Truly the undisputed strongest of Fairy Tail.
Yet, even this strongest mage was utterly helpless against Acnologia, instantly sustaining grievous injuries.
While Gildarts appeared outwardly normal, Drake could sense a disruption in his ki flow. His movements further suggested the presence of physical injuries.
