"Kai is everywhere!"
The commentator could barely contain his excitement.
"Two clear chances already. First, he wins the ball high up the pitch and starts a dangerous attack. Then he almost scores with a towering header. Atlético Madrid haven't found an answer for him."
"With Arsenal's forwards still searching for a breakthrough, Kai has taken responsibility and driven this attack himself."
His performance lifted the entire Emirates.
The supporters could feel it.
Their captain wasn't just leading by example. He was dragging Arsenal into the contest.
"He's running the game!"
"Come on, Kai!"
"Keep going!"
"Come on, Arsenal!"
The roar from the stands only grew louder.
The energy spread onto the pitch.
"Keep pushing!" Kai shouted as he dropped back into midfield.
"Use me if you're under pressure!"
"Left side's open!" Aubameyang yelled.
"The right's on as well!" Sánchez called.
Both wingers wanted the ball.
Aubameyang, especially.
The Gabon international had arrived with enormous expectations, but his performances hadn't yet justified his transfer fee. Tonight was another opportunity to prove himself.
Seeing his teammates playing with confidence again, Kai finally allowed himself a small smile.
The rhythm was returning.
Now they just needed a goal.
Across the pitch, Atlético were making adjustments of their own.
Conceding two dangerous chances inside the opening minutes was far from ideal.
Gabi's expression remained tense.
Perhaps Arsenal's poor run of form had disguised the fact that this was still one of Europe's best teams.
On the touchline, Pat Rice folded his arms and quietly watched.
The sharpness was returning.
It looked far more like the Arsenal that had conquered Europe the previous season.
He couldn't help smiling.
Not far away, Diego Simeone was anything but calm. The Atlético manager barked constant instructions in Spanish from the technical area.
"Push up!"
"Closer!"
"Don't give them space!"
His voice never stopped.
Play resumed with an Arsenal throw-in.
Chambers found Aubameyang, but the forward's pass into the final third was intercepted.
"Break!" Gabi shouted.
He spun around.
Only to discover Arsenal were already back in shape.
His eyes widened.
¿Tan rápido?
(That quickly?)
Pat Rice punched the air. This pleased him almost as much as a goal would have.
The moment possession was lost, every Arsenal player reacted instinctively.
The back line dropped.
The midfield compressed the space.
Everyone knew exactly where they were supposed to be.
Atlético's counterattack never had room to develop.
Kai scanned the defensive shape around him.
Perfect.
"Hold your positions!"
Atlético refused to slow down.
The ball found Griezmann on the right.
The Frenchman drove forward at pace.
Kai shifted across to meet him.
Griezmann looked up.
Rather than forcing the issue, he played the ball inside.
Kai immediately changed direction and charged toward Martínez.
The striker shaped to pass.
But Kanté had already blocked the obvious passing lane.
Martínez tried to drag the ball back.
Kai arrived shoulder first.
The collision knocked Martínez off balance, but he somehow kept possession.
Only for Kanté to steal it a split second later.
Instead of returning it to Kai, Kanté released Wilshere.
"Go!" Kai shouted.
Without waiting for the ball, he burst into Atlético's half.
"Arsenal break forward!"
Atlético sprinted back just as quickly.
Godín stayed tight to Suárez, refusing to leave the Uruguayan any space.
Then Suárez suddenly dropped into midfield.
"Damn it..."
Godín hesitated.
¿Seguirlo?
¿O mantener la línea defensiva?
(Follow him?
Or hold the defensive line?)
That split second was enough.
Suárez received Wilshere's pass, immediately switched play to Sánchez, then spun and attacked the penalty area.
Sánchez drove toward the byline.
One step-over.
Then another.
He nudged the ball inside and fired across goal. The shot flashed inches wide of the far post.
"Oh!"
Sánchez collapsed to one knee, clutching his head.
So close.
The commentator could hardly believe it.
"Just wide!"
"Arsenal are knocking on the door now!"
"They've got Atlético rocking and on the ropes!"
Three attacks.
Three genuine chances.
Nobody doubted it now.
Arsenal had arrived.
The co-commentator chuckled.
"Perhaps Arsenal simply enjoy playing Europe's best."
"They've made a habit of raising their level when the opposition gets stronger."
The comment drew laughter from supporters watching around the country.
It had become a running joke among Premier League fans.
Kai was already organising the team again.
"Recover!"
"Get back into shape!"
The players immediately retreated into their defensive positions.
Atlético restarted with a long goal kick into Arsenal's half.
Kai won the first header comfortably.
The ball dropped to Wilshere.
Wilshere carried it forward.
Kai stayed a few yards behind, constantly scanning.
Suárez.
Aubameyang.
Sánchez.
Each run was carefully measured.
Then Kai suddenly stopped.
"Jack!"
Wilshere instantly understood.
He checked his run and rolled the ball square.
Kai met it first time.
Instead of controlling it, he swept his right foot through the ball. The pass skimmed across the grass, bending around Atlético's midfield and splitting their defence wide open.
It rolled perfectly into the left channel.
Aubameyang was already racing onto it.
"What a pass!"
"Kai has picked him out brilliantly!"
Aubameyang's pulse quickened.
The timing was perfect.
The weight was perfect.
He accelerated once more, burst past Fernando, and nudged the ball into the penalty area.
"He's through!"
The goalkeeper rushed off his line.
Aubameyang kept his composure.
He opened his body and delicately lifted the ball over the advancing Oblak.
It floated toward the empty net.
He had already started to celebrate.
Then a blue-and-red shirt flashed across his vision.
Godín.
The Atlético captain had sprinted back to the goal line and hooked the ball clear at the very last moment.
The commentator almost shouted himself hoarse.
"Off the line!"
"What a clearance from Godín!"
"That looked in!"
Players from both sides immediately surrounded the referee.
"Ref! That's crossed the line!"
"No chance! He cleared it!"
"It was over!"
"It never crossed!"
The referee waved everyone away before consulting his assistant.
The stadium held its breath.
Finally, the decision came.
No goal.
Play would restart with a throw-in.
The Emirates erupted with furious whistles.
Pat Rice stormed toward the fourth official.
"You're telling me that wasn't over the line?"
"That's a perfectly good goal!"
The official remained unmoved.
Pat threw his hands into the air in disbelief.
For years he had watched Arsène Wenger explode over controversial decisions. Now, standing on the touchline himself, he understood exactly why.
From the replay, it was a superb clearance. Clean, perfectly timed, and with no room for controversy.
That settled Arsenal's protests, though Pat Rice still looked frustrated on the touchline.
Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, escaped with a sigh of relief.
Four Arsenal chances in the opening minutes had already put Diego Simeone's side on the back foot.
The visitors regrouped while Arsenal quickly dropped into shape, ready for the next phase.
"Arsenal have flown out of the blocks," Andy Gray said. "Atletico Madrid haven't found an answer yet. There are no goals on the board, but Arsenal have been in complete control."
He continued.
"And Kai has been outstanding. Every dangerous move has gone through him. He's breaking up attacks, driving the team forward, and arriving in dangerous positions. He's dictating this match from both ends of the pitch."
It was impossible to ignore.
From the opening whistle, Kai had become the heartbeat of Arsenal's performance.
Even more impressive was his willingness to attack. It was never the strongest part of his game, yet every forward run carried purpose and conviction.
Atletico finally responded.
After weathering the early storm, they increased the tempo, hoping to strike before Arsenal could reset defensively.
It proved easier in theory than in practice.
Kai and Kante closed the middle of the pitch with relentless discipline. Every passing lane seemed to disappear the moment Atletico looked up, while Arsenal's back line remained compact behind them.
"Damn it."
Griezmann clenched his jaw.
Every attack stalled before it could gather momentum.
Breaking through Kai and Kante had become Atletico's biggest problem.
He would have preferred to challenge Kai directly, to prove he could beat Arsenal's captain one-on-one.
But the risk was obvious.
Lose the ball to Kai and Arsenal would be charging the other way in seconds.
Instead, he targeted Kante.
Kante's defensive instincts were exceptional, but Griezmann believed he could at least disrupt Arsenal's rhythm if he forced his fellow Frenchman into a duel.
He waited patiently.
When Kai drifted away to cover another passing lane, Griezmann immediately raised his hand.
Gabi found him without hesitation.
Griezmann drove forward, only for Kante to meet him almost instantly.
He slowed, teasing the ball to his left.
Kante refused to bite.
Griezmann burst to the right.
Kante reacted immediately.
Both men reached the ball together.
It ricocheted loose.
For a split second, they stared before throwing themselves into the second challenge.
Griezmann stretched first and tried to release Martínez.
Kante lunged again.
The pass struck Kante's shin and looped high into the air.
Both players looked up.
Griezmann's heart sank.
The loose ball was dropping straight toward Kai.
Kai glanced at the flight of the ball, scanned the movement ahead of him, and bellowed,
"Go!"
The command echoed across the pitch to his attackers.
Suárez, Aubameyang, Sánchez and Wilshere exploded into the final third without hesitation.
Wilshere's movement stood out.
Instead of sprinting straight through the middle, he curved his run toward the right channel, slipping into the space behind Atlético's full-back.
Juanfran hesitated.
Follow Wilshere and the box would lose a defender.
Stay central and Wilshere would be free.
The hesitation lasted only an instant.
Kai met the dropping ball with a first-time diagonal pass that sailed nearly half the length of the pitch.
"I knew it..."
Juanfran turned, but Wilshere had already established position.
The Arsenal midfielder used his body well, held off the challenge, cushioned the ball on his thigh, then nudged it into space with his next touch before bursting into the penalty area.
"Wilshere's through!"
The commentator's voice thundered across the broadcast.
Inside the area, Sánchez, Suárez and Aubameyang all attacked the six-yard box.
Wilshere looked up once.
Instead of crossing, he pulled the ball back.
Kai had timed his run perfectly.
He arrived on the edge of the area and struck through the ball first time.
It stayed low.
It screamed through Godín's legs.
The goalkeeper barely moved before it crashed into the back of the net.
Kai wheeled away toward the corner flag before dropping into a long knee slide.
"Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooal!"
"Kai scores! Arsenal lead!"
George Adams almost shouted himself hoarse.
"They've been knocking on the door since kick-off, and their captain finally breaks it open."
"What a finish. Clean, powerful, and absolutely ruthless. That's Kai all over. One touch, one strike, and Atletico are punished."
The response was deafening.
More than sixty thousand Arsenal supporters erupted in celebration.
The stadium shook beneath the roar.
After wasting three promising opportunities, Arsenal had finally made the fourth count.
Their captain had delivered.
"Kai! Kai! Kai!"
His name rolled around the Emirates in wave after wave.
On the touchline, Pat Rice embraced the coaching staff.
It was the breakthrough Arsenal deserved.
Kai disappeared beneath a pile of celebrating teammates.
Across the pitch, the mood could not have been more different.
Godín stood motionless.
Fernando Kairui stared at the turf in frustration.
Gabi gathered his teammates with a stern expression.
Nothing about this match had unfolded the way Atletico expected.
The media had questioned Arsenal's form before kickoff.
The team in red looked anything but vulnerable.
This was an Arsenal side playing like genuine Champions League contenders.
Juanfran rounded on Griezmann.
"If you lose it, win it back. Don't just stand there watching."
Griezmann said nothing.
He knew the turnover had started the move.
Just as importantly, Atletico's defence had reacted a second too slowly, and against a side playing with Arsenal's intensity, that was all the invitation Kai needed.
