Chapter 8 - The dragon of Gnitaheid

The Horn of Mead  tavern was alive with the clamor of travelers, adventurers, and townsfolk.

Tankards clinked, laughter echoed, and the scent of roast meat and spiced ale filled the air.

Nova and Scarlet, seated at a corner table, listened as stories and rumors swirled around them.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors slammed open. A battered man staggered in, his cloak scorched, eyes wild with terror.

"Dragon! In the Gnitaheid Pass!"

he gasped, collapsing to his knees.

"It burned the caravans, took the gold, left only ash and bones…"

The tavern fell silent. Even the bravest adventurers paled at the word.

A burly man in a royal tabard stood and shouted,

"Hear this! The king offers one hundred gold coins and royal honor to those who slay the beast! Who among you dares?"

Whispers spread like wildfire.

Some spoke of Fafnir, the legendary dragon, others of cursed gold and ancient wrath.

Scarlet's eyes met Nova's.

"If we take this quest, we may earn an audience with the king. We could learn more about this world-and bring wealth and safety to Thalara."

Nova nodded, determination burning in his gaze.

"We'll do it. Not for gold, but for answers-and for our home."

The Road to Gnitaheid

The next morning, they joined a band of seasoned adventurers and royal guards.

The journey to Gnitaheid Pass was perilous, winding through dense pine forests and rocky cliffs.

The land itself seemed to recoil from the dragon's presence.

Trees were scorched black, their branches twisted into grotesque shapes.

Ash drifted on the wind, and the ground was littered with charred bones.

Once, they saw a herd of crystal antelope, now nothing but melted glass and twisted horns.

Scarlet shivered, drawing her cloak tighter.

"It feels like the world is holding its breath."

Nova squeezed her hand.

"Stay close. We'll face this together.

The Dragon's Lair

Gnitaheid Pass was a jagged gorge, its cliffs rising like the teeth of some ancient beast. Sulfurous mist clung to the rocks, and the air vibrated with a low, menacing hum.

At the heart of the gorge, a mound of gold and treasure gleamed-cursed, blackened, and half-melted. Coiled atop it was the dragon.

It was a creature out of nightmares:

Serpentine and massive, its body covered in scales as black as midnight, each one edged with a faint, sickly green glow.

Wings like tattered banners, their bones sharp as spears.

Eyes like molten gold, burning with ancient malice and hunger.

Venom dripped from its fangs, hissing where it struck the stone, leaving deep, smoking craters.

It opened its jaws and roared-a sound that shook the earth and rattled the soul.

"Fafnir's get," Nova whispered.

"A dragon born of greed and ruin."

A Shadow in the Mist

Unseen by the gathered adventurers, a figure watched from the cliff's shadow-a tall man in a cloak of midnight feathers, his eyes cold and calculating.

His lips curled into a smile as the dragon unleashed its fury.

"Let them fight," he murmured.

"Let the Worldshaper reveal his strength. The king's little game is going exactly as planned."

He vanished into the mist, a faint echo of laughter trailing behind him.

The Battle Begins

The adventurers charged first, swords drawn and spells blazing. The dragon moved with terrifying speed, its tail whipping through the air and shattering shields.

One by one, the bravest fell-some incinerated by fire, others dissolved by venom.

Nova and Scarlet advanced, side by side. Scarlet flanked left, drawing the dragon's gaze with a flash of silver.

Nova summoned his quill, writing in the air:

[

Forge: Dawnbreaker Spear

]

A spear of pure light materialized in his hands, its blade singing with celestial energy.

The dragon lunged, jaws snapping.

Nova dodged, driving the spear into its flank. Scales shattered, but the beast barely flinched.

It retaliated, spraying venom in a wide arc. Scarlet rolled aside, but a droplet grazed her arm.

She cried out, clutching her burning skin.

Nova's heart stopped.

"Scarlet!"

The system screen flashed crimson:

Nova's Rage Unleashed

The dragon loomed over Scarlet, jaws wide, ready to finish her.

Rage exploded in Nova's chest. The world narrowed to a single point of fury.

His eyes became pools of shadow and fire, his aura burning so fiercely the air shimmered around him.

The adventurers and guards stumbled back, fear in their eyes.

"You touched her."

His voice was not entirely human-a guttural, echoing snarl that made even the dragon hesitate.

He wrote with trembling hands:

[Invoke: Ragnarok's Storm]

The sky split open. Lightning arced down, striking Nova's spear and transforming it into

 Gungnir-Odin's legendary lance.

Ancient runes blazed along its shaft, and the air crackled with divine power.

Nova's features twisted with fury, his silhouette flickering with demonic energy. His shadow stretched, horns seeming to crown his head, his hands wreathed in black and gold flame.

Nova leapt, Gungnir in hand, and drove the spear into the dragon's throat. Black blood erupted, sizzling like acid.

The dragon shrieked, its tail lashing out and shattering stone. Nova was thrown back, but he rolled to his feet, fury undimmed.

Scarlet, gritting her teeth, hurled a dagger at the dragon's eye. It struck true, blinding one side.

Nova charged, runes swirling around him.

The dragon unleashed a torrent of fire, but Nova's spear split the flames, parting them like water.

He vaulted onto the dragon's back, driving Gungnir between its scales. The beast thrashed, trying to shake him loose, but Nova held fast.

With a roar, he plunged the spear into the dragon's heart. The ground shook as the dragon convulsed, its death throes sending shockwaves through the gorge.

The dragon collapsed, its body dissolving into ash and cursed gold. The air cleared, the oppressive darkness lifting.

Nova stood over the remains, chest heaving, eyes still burning with godlike power.

Who Are You

As the dust settled, the surviving adventurers and royal guards stared in stunned silence. Whispers spread:

"That spear… it was Gungnir."

"He fought like a god…"

"Did you see his eyes? He looked like a demon!"

A young boy, trembling, stepped forward.

"W-who are you?"

he stammered.

Nova looked at him, and for a moment, his gaze was cold and distant-almost monstrous.

Scarlet, still weak from her wound, reached for Nova's hand.

"Nova, it's over. Come back to me."

But Nova did not hear her. His rage had not faded; it only grew, threatening to consume him.

The ground beneath Nova's feet began to crack, black fire spreading in jagged lines. The sky darkened, and the earth itself seemed to recoil from his wrath.

The shadowy mastermind watched from afar, a satisfied smile on his lips.

"Yes… show me your true nature, Worldshaper. Let the world see what you really are."

Nova raised his hand, and the land itself trembled.

Flames licked at the edges of the gorge, threatening to consume everything.

Scarlet, struggling to her feet, staggered to Nova's side. She cupped his face in her hands, her eyes shining with tears.

"Nova! Please-come back. This isn't you."

She pressed her lips to his, pouring all her love and hope into the kiss.

For a moment, the world was silent. The flames stilled. Nova's eyes cleared, the demonic shadow receding.

As he stepped forward, the scorched earth beneath his feet shimmered. Where his foot touched, green shoots burst from the ashes. Flowers bloomed, grass spread, and the land healed with every step.

Blossom of Land

Wherever you walk in peace, the land will flourish. Life will return to what was destroyed.

Nova fell to his knees, exhausted, as nature reclaimed the battlefield.

The adventurers and guards watched in awe as the gorge transformed from a wasteland to a field of wildflowers and emerald grass.

Scarlet knelt beside him, holding him close.

"You're not a demon, Nova. You're hope itself."

As Nova and Scarlet walked from the battlefield, the king's envoy approached, bowing deeply.

"The throne awaits you, Worldshaper. The king himself wishes to honor you."

Nova nodded, his anger faded but the memory of it haunting him.

He glanced at his hands, now glowing with gentle green light.

I must master this power-for Scarlet, for Thalara, and for the world that now looks to me as both savior and legend… and as something to fear.

Far above, the shadowy mastermind melted into the night, his plan moving forward.

"Soon, Worldshaper. The world will see your true strength-and its price."
