Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Uzumaki Mito’s Test

"BIG SISTER BROUGHT HER BOYFRIEND HOME!"

Tsunade's face turned bright red from Nawaki's shout, but her hand never once let go.

She was afraid that the moment she let go, Raizen would run away, so she dragged him straight into the backyard.

Only when they arrived in front of Mito did Tsunade finally let go of his hand, but her face had already become completely red.

It was only at this moment that she realized she had actually dragged this guy by the hand across half of Konoha. How was she supposed to face people after this?

The most important thing was, the two of them hadn't even established a relationship.

If tomorrow things went back to how they were before, who knows what rumors would spread again.

Maybe the very next day someone would say they had broken up.

"You're Uchiha Raizen, right?", Mito, who was watering flowers, put down the watering can and looked at Raizen with a smile as she asked.

At this moment, Mito looked every bit like a kind elder, which surprised Raizen quite a bit.

One had to know, when Mito was young, her temper was even more explosive than Uzumaki Kushina's.

You could only say that fierceness was a consistent tradition among women of the Uzumaki clan.

But time could change many things, including a person's character.

"Lady Mito, hello. I'm Raizen," Raizen bowed respectfully to Mito.

"I've heard Tsunade mention you often. Come, have a seat, just make yourself at home, no need to be formal."

After the group sat down, Nawaki peeked his head out from under the table, curiously sizing up Raizen.

You had to admit, Raizen was very handsome, and he had a very unique aura.

You could only say that there were no ugly people in the Uchiha clan. Pick anyone at random and they'd be a pretty boy or girl.

The genes of this clan were overwhelmingly strong, terrifyingly so.

Even within the Uchiha clan, Raizen's looks were still top-tier. He just never paid much attention to his appearance.

He was about to die anyway, what use was being handsome?

Seeing that Nawaki had been staring at him curiously, Raizen also glanced at Nawaki and forced out an awkward smile.

At this time, Nawaki was only four years old, with a chubby and adorable face.

You could only say Tsunade's mother had truly been persistent.

A 13-year age gap between siblings wasn't common in the ninja world, after all, the ninja world had no fertility restrictions.

Unfortunately, Tsunade and Nawaki's parents died on a mission two years ago.

And it was precisely because of the trauma from that incident that Tsunade devoted herself even harder to studying medical ninjutsu, eventually forcing Raizen into a desperate corner.

"Little Tsunade, for you to suddenly bring Raizen home like this, did something happen?", Mito asked directly.

"Grandma, please save Raizen. He… he might not live much longer…"

"You two are the top medical ninjas, you still need my help?", Mito asked, puzzled.

"It's not that kind of 'not live much longer'…", Taking a deep breath and adjusting her emotions, Tsunade quickly recounted how the higher-ups had wanted to eliminate Raizen, how Raizen had shown his worth to survive, and how she herself step by step pushed Raizen into a corner again, leading the higher-ups to once more decide to kill him.

After hearing Tsunade's account, Mito didn't even know how to respond.

'What kind of sin is all this?'

"Tsunade, take Nawaki and go out for now. I want to talk to Raizen alone," Mito didn't immediately decide whether to help Raizen, she wanted to test him first.

Mito was the jinchūriki of the Nine-Tails.

And the Nine-Tails had a special ability, to perceive a person's goodwill or malice.

However, Mito didn't have a good relationship with the Nine-Tails. It was a forced seal, forcibly suppressed.

So if she wanted the Nine-Tails' help, she'd have to pay a heavy price, but for her granddaughter's happiness, she had no choice.

After sending Tsunade and Nawaki away, Mito once again examined Raizen.

You had to admit, Raizen's appearance and aura were excellent. No wonder he had bewitched her granddaughter so thoroughly.

Unlike Tobirama, Mito was, after all, the wife of Senju Hashirama. She didn't have much hostility toward the Uchiha clan, so she never really opposed Tsunade's feelings for Raizen.

"Raizen, do you hate Tobirama?", After a long while, finally receiving a reply from Kurama, Mito asked, ignoring the fox's sarcastic remarks.

"I do hate him," Raizen answered without hesitation.

How could he not?

Just because he was looked at in a crowd, these past seven years had been pure hell?

Constantly walking on eggshells, living in fear, and being tormented by that sharp-tongued hag Koharu, what kind of person wouldn't be filled with resentment?

"Sigh…", Mito sighed and asked again, "Then do you hate Konoha?"

"No," Raizen gently shook his head.

He probably already understood what method Mito had used to test him, so he told the truth.

Toward Konoha, Raizen indeed didn't harbor much hatred, unlike Naruto who was abused daily.

His adoptive mother treated him very well, and he was quite respected in the village.

Aside from the constant threat from the higher-ups, his life wasn't nearly as miserable as he portrayed.

If he didn't put on an act, Tsunade wouldn't have acted so desperately.

The people who made him suffer had only ever been a handful.

To survive, he had indeed used many methods, but he was never a psychopath.

Resentment had its targets. Those who deserved to die were only a few, not the entire village.

Afterward, Mito asked Raizen many questions, bringing up many names.

At the same time, she constantly received emotional feedback from Kurama.

They talked for a full hour, and then Mito said to Raizen, "Raizen, wait in the outer yard for now. I want to have another chat with Tsunade."

"I'll go get her," Raizen nodded obediently and turned to leave.

———

Soon, Tsunade came into the courtyard, looking anxiously at Mito.

"Grandma, what were you two talking about for so long?"

"Just some old lady's experience," Mito said, "Tsunade, do you really want to help Raizen?"

"Grandma, why are you asking that?", Tsunade said, dissatisfied, "He suffered such cruel treatment. First, Second Grandpa destroyed his life just because he smiled once."

"Then our teacher decided he wasn't worth monitoring, but still refused to let him go and wanted him dead."

"After that, it was me who kept messing around, pushing him to the edge of a cliff."

"We were the ones who made mistakes, and he's always been the victim, what reason do I have not to help him?"

"Sigh…", Mito sighed deeply, "What a tangled karma."

"Just now I used a special method to sense his heart, it's a mix of good and bad."

"The good news is, he doesn't harbor any malice toward you."

"The bad news is, he doesn't hold much goodwill either."

Tsunade looked a bit downcast and said, "I thought he hated me…"

"When he told me he wanted to sever all ties and have nothing more to do with me, I thought he hated me completely."

"No goodwill… maybe it's because he's completely lost hope in me."

"It's good that you can understand that," Mito said helplessly.

"But he does seem to have goodwill toward me and Nawaki. I guess it's because of you. Even if he doesn't want to deal with you right now, because of love for the house extending to its crows…"

"Grandma, don't say such things," Tsunade quickly stopped her, blushing.

She didn't dare to hope for anything now, she just wanted to get through this matter and then try to repair her relationship with Raizen.

"Ha ha!", Seeing her granddaughter flustered, Mito couldn't help but laugh.

Her granddaughter really was unbelievably naive.

But soon, Mito once again looked a bit worried.
