Levi stood paralysed in the doorway, his heard pounding violently as he took in the scene before him. Olivia and the other man lay entangled on the bed he shared with Olivia. The faint light of the curtains flashed through the room as Levi could see the mockery look hinted in their faces. Seeing how Levi was frozen at a place, the cheating duos burst into laughter.
"What are you doing here, Levi?" Olivia's voice cut through the tension, her initial surprise swiftly morphing into icy disdain. She scrambled to her feet, pulling a sheet around her, but the damage had been done. "I thought you'd be gone for a while and were still with those men who called me earlier."
"Still with the men who almost got me killed because of you?" Levi voice was sharp, hinted with so much pain and regret.
"Why are you still alive then?" She backfired, glancing at the man who was caressing her shoulders as the let out a mocking laughter.
Levi's anger surged, the betrayal carving deep wounds into his soul. "Why? Why would you do this to me? After everything I've done for you?"
"You were living out of my money so you've literally done nothing for me, Levi." Olivia stated, her voice void of any expression at the moment.
The man, still lounging casually, looked up with a smirk. "Oh, come on, Levi. You really think someone like her would stay with a loser like you, forever? You're just a temporary distraction. Now that you're out of the way, she's free to be with someone who actually matters."
Olivia's eyes were cold, and she nodded in agreement to her newfound lover's words. "You're really not just worth the effort any more. I never really needed you. It was fun while it lasted, but now you're just a burden."
A burden?
Her words kept replaying in Levi's head. Was this the woman he had being with all his life? This was the same woman who almost had him killed just because he saved her life. He regretted every borrowing some money to save her life, but all the same, he wouldn't have found out about his secret identity if he hadn't. Which he was quite grateful for, but still, he wouldn't have helped Olivia if he could go back in time.
Levi's heart sank with each word. "But why?, I thought we had something real. I was just trying to save you, and this is how you repay me?"
She laughed, a butter, derisive sound. "You saved me? You mean you threw away your money and your life for me? That's pathetic, Levi I didn't ask you to do any of that it was just your own foolish choice."
The man's voice was laced with mockery. "You really think you're special, Levi? You're nothing but a pawn in this game. And now, you're just another loser with a broken heart."
Without warning, the man surged forward and shoved Levi with brutal force. The impact sent Levi stumbling backwards, crashing into the wall with a thud and pain radiated through his body, a physical pain telling to the pain he was having emotionally.
"Get out!" Olivia's voice was cold and commanding." You've outlived your usefulness. Leave us alone."
Levi couldn't believe everything that was happening in his in just a day. It felt too bad to be true. This was the end to his lifetime relationship with Olivia who didn't even do anything with the man that just pushed him to the ground. He must have felt too special in her eyes when deep down he met nothing to her but as a pawn to their game as she had said.
He didn't want to ponder much about it all as it would only cause him more pain than good. Levi staggered to his feet, his vision blurred with tears of frustration and hurt. His mind raced with cruelty of their words and the crushing reality of his situation. With a final, desperate look at Olivia, he turned and left the apartment.
That was what had really happened. Although he wanted to believe he left without a word, a full-blown confrontation had happened and had left him even more broken than he already was.
The night was dark and oppressively cold as Levi stumbled through the streets. The cool air did little to ease the burning sensation in his chest. The world around him seemed to close in, each step heavy. His thoughts were tumult of anger and despair.
"How did it come to this? I thought I was making the right choices ever since I came out from the orphanage, fighting do what was right, only to be betrayed by the one I trusted the most." Levi muttered to himself as he found a small rock and sat on it. He ignored the relentless cold and battled with his thoughts, consumed by his emotions. "Was everything just a lie? Would my hidden identity be a lie as well? Was my love for Olivia, my sacrifices all for nothing? I'm tired of this life. I'm tired of living like this." A tear escaped Levi eyes and fell on his front pocket where he had kept the badge and his card Griffin Gluck had given him.
He brought out the card and made an attempt to call the number that the man had told him to call, but he hesitated. As he continued pondering on his thoughts, he heard soft footsteps approaching him from behind as he felt a gentle touch on his shoulder, jolting him to reality as he jumped from the rock he was sitting only for him to find a not so familiar figure standing in front of him.
"Are you Levi Monroe?" Came the voice of the unfamiliar figure with a soft-spoken voice sending shivers down Levi's spine. He was trying so hard to find the face familiar but his circumstances
had affected his retentive memories. He wondered who she was and how she knew his name and at the same time he believed this wasn't the first time they're meeting, and what was she doing here in the dark?
