Chapter 40 - The Torturing Hills

It was the day of the chunin exams and all the teams were gathered in a large ground. The proctor of this exam was Kitsuchi.

Kitsuchi announced, "The second round of the chunin exams is The Torturing Hills. This is an area with a lot of sky-touching hills. It has a lot of dangerous creatures. You have to spend 4 days in there, each of you will be given a scroll and the team that collectively has the greatest number of scrolls at the end will win. For qualifying, you have to collect at least 6 scrolls collectively and at least two members of your team have to be alive for you to quality.

Kazuki thought, 'Almost like the Forest of Death, don't know who copied but whatever. However, spending four days is compulsory, what a pain.'

Kazuki had already anticipated something like this and stored enough nutrition bars so all three of them could survive for at least three days.

"Do you guys have any food?" Kazuki asked.

They both shook their heads.

"I have some nutrition bars with me. We can hunt animals for the rest." Kazuki said.

"What's the plan? Should we aim to get as many scrolls as possible or just enough to qualify?" Ryuma asked.

Kazuki said, "I think we should aim for the top spot."

Yuki, who was thinking something until now, said, "Kazuki, Ryuma, didn't you notice every Iwa team is staring at us? What if they are planning to target us?"

Kazuki replied, "That could be troublesome but I doubt there will be a better sensor than you in this competition, so we can avoid them if that happens."

Yuki asked, "What if they still somehow manage to corner us?"

Kazuki said, "In that case, we'll have to fight our way through."

After finishing the announcement, every team was separated and taken to different sides so that the battle doesn't start as soon as they enter.

But Kazuki sensed something fishy, he had already memorized everyone's chakra signature in the competition, so he noticed that every Iwa team was placed very close to their location, they were basically surrounded by Iwa teams.

Kazuki thought, 'But how do I explain this to my team? I didn't even tell them about my Mind's Eye of The Kagura. I trust Yuki completely but I'm not so sure about Ryuma, we are the members of same team and we get along too but still.'

Kazuki decided after a few minutes of thinking, 'I think I'll take the risk and tell them.'

The moment the starting explosion was heard, Kazuki's team started running through the rocky valley. He closed his eyes for a few seconds and sensed that every Iwa team was heading towards them.

Kazuki said, "I don't have time to explain how but I just sensed that all Iwagakure teams are running towards us, we should run in an unpredictable direction and find a hiding spot far away from here. Yuki, tell me the moment someone senses us."

None of them asked any questions and started running in an unpredictable direction.

Ryuma thought, 'Are Kazuki's sensory skills so great that he sensed this many people from that much distance? that's strange because Yuki has always been a better sensor than him.'

Yuki thought, 'How is he sensing that far? It's not even possible. I'll ask him once we get far and find a hiding spot.'

The second Konoha team, which consisted of three male Genin who were secretly part of The Root, was also trying to find Kazuki's team but it was difficult because unlike Iwa's teams, they didn't know the starting location of Kazuki's team.

The three of them were 16 years old, so they were far more experienced than any Genin and they were trained to become assassins.

The leader of the team, whose name was Isamu Inuzuka, was a specialist in tracking. So it was only a matter of time before he or his dog caught Yuki's scent, as they had four days to find her.

Kazuki's team managed to run far away and made a cave inside one of the mountains and hid it with rocks.

They went inside and used fire release to make torches.

All of them sat down and there was a moment of silence before Yuki broke it and said, "Kazuki, are you going to tell us what you're hiding?"

Kazuki sighed and said, "I'm sorry I hid this from you. I have a special ability through which I can sense people far away if I close my eyes and focus for a few seconds."

"Like how far away?" Yuki asked.

"I don't know, maybe 10 kilometers." Kazuki answered.

Their jaw dropped after hearing this.

Yuki said with her eyes widened, "T-ten kilometers? Even veteran sensors can't sense anything that far by themselves, I think the only person better than you at sensing would be the head of the Yamanaka clan."

Ryuma was also fairly surprised, he asked, "Is it some Uzumaki or Uchiha thing?"

Kazuki answered, "I think it's something related to the Uzumaki."

Kazuki had lied a little about his powers, he could actually sense up to 20 km if he focused really hard.

Yuki asked, "So, what do we do now? Just sit here? We have to get at least two more scrolls to qualify."

Kazuki closed his eyes and focused for a few minutes before saying, "Well, we have left them far away and taken a different route than they were expecting. All the Iwa team are very close to each other but they won't be able to track us unless they have other methods of sensing like bugs or ninja dogs which Iwagakure doesn't specialize in, so I think we can safely hunt some teams other than Iwa for some scrolls."
