Pilot chapter

The redness of the desert stretched out before me as I wandered Limbo's barren wasteland. I've seen death. I've witnessed tragedy. But this—this was a different kind of hell.

Arcbeasts roamed the terrain, deformed and lifeless. Some stood like towering, skeletal giants who, thankfully, never seemed to notice me. Others were as small as insects—though far more persistent. Those little pests were drawn to me like I was the most fascinating thing in this realm. Which, to be fair, I probably was.

Stranded, I resorted to luring smaller Arcbeasts into the rocky terrain to scavenge them. I was lucky Flo could still be used here. Otherwise, I wouldn't have lasted a day.

Okay, I'm not being entirely honest.

The Flo here was… different. Amplified. Wild. Far more powerful than anything I'd ever felt in the Wakened World. I gathered sticks and leaves from the ghoulish trees and lit them with my lighter. As I fanned the flames, they danced violently, stretching higher, burning hotter—like they wanted to consume.

It started to make sense why the Arcbeasts couldn't function here. These things were born from the Arc. And the stronger they were, the more pain they seemed to feel. The worst of them—broken, exiled things—stood alone, trembling and twitching.

Their screams echoed through the dunes, so sharp and layered they could drive off anything living. I saw some of them rip themselves apart, crumbling to dust—only to reform moments later. But they were never quite the same afterward.

I watched them for a while, taking notes. That's all I could do.

Now you're probably wondering: Why the hell would anyone be in a place like this?

Well… I'm a curious, curious man.

When you're a Synch—someone who can manipulate Flo well enough —who's going to stop you from exploring the universe?

Turns out the answer is mother nature.

Lucky for me, I packed like I was going to explore the snowy expanse of Lugia. As soon as I stepped into Limbo, an Arcbeast came out of nowhere and attacked. It destroyed the stabilizing device I'd built to keep the rift open. I think the rift's frequency frightened it. Not long after, it stopped focusing on me and started writhing from the pain in the air itself.

Seems like Arcbeasts don't eat. They... hear. They feel frequencies.

And here, the Flo never stops screaming.
