Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Houses

The morning air was crisp, filled with the scent of damp earth and freshly cut wood. Sylas stood outside the model house, watching the villagers as they prepared for another long day. The structure he'd built yesterday had become the center of attention—people kept stopping by to examine the sturdy walls, tapping the beams as if to test its strength.

"Not a single creak," one old man said with a nod. "Feels solid. Warmer, too."

Sylas smiled faintly. It wasn't just a house—it was a symbol. Proof that change was possible.

Mira walked up beside him, brushing dust from her apron. "They've been talking about it since dawn," she said. "I think they're starting to believe in what we're doing."

"Good," Sylas replied. "Belief is the first step. But now we build more."

> [Quest Update: Improve Village Shelter]

– Build 5 Durable Homes (0/5)

– Encourage Villager Participation (In Progress)

– Gather More Materials (In Progress)

He opened his system menu and reviewed the status of his creation and engineering skills. Both had leveled slightly overnight. His mind buzzed with new crafting options—more efficient roof designs, better insulation, stronger walls.

> [Skill Progress: Engineering (Level 2)]

– New Option Unlocked: Modular Foundation

– Bonus: +10% Construction Speed

Before diving into work, Sylas turned to Mira. "Can you organize a few teams? I'll lead the first build myself, but we'll need more hands to keep things moving."

Mira nodded. "Already done. They're waiting near the storehouse."

Sylas made his way there and found several villagers gathered—some young, some older, a few still unsure of themselves.

"We're starting today," Sylas said simply. "I'll show you how to build the frame, then we split into groups. The faster we build, the sooner everyone has a stronger roof over their heads."

One of the younger men raised his hand. "What about tools? We don't have much."

"I'll handle that," Sylas replied.

He reached into his system and pulled up his crafting options. With a small flash of light, a basic toolset materialized—a hammer, a chisel, a hand saw.

– Durability: 100%

– Usable by non-magic users

Gasps rippled through the group. One of the older women stepped forward and touched the tools like they were treasures.

"How did you—?"

"Doesn't matter," Sylas said. "What matters is what we do with them."

The group got to work. Sylas led them through each step, explaining in simple terms—how to place support beams, how to layer the roof so water wouldn't seep in, how to pack the ground for a stable foundation. Some struggled at first, but the mood was focused. Determined.

Time passed quickly. Sweat dripped from foreheads, hands were blistered, but progress was steady.

[Quest Progress: Villager Participation – Moderate]

[Skill Growth: Leadership +1]

By afternoon, the second home was halfway finished. More villagers had shown up, drawn by curiosity or by the growing buzz around the village. Mira moved among them, offering guidance and support. Her steady presence kept people calm.

Sylas took a short break, drinking from a waterskin as he sat under a tree. The sounds of hammers and laughter drifted through the air.

He felt something stir in his chest. A small, quiet pride.

But the system wasn't finished with him.

> [System Notice: Village Development Tier – 1 Reached]

– New Features Unlocked

– Blueprint Access Granted

– Minor Morale Boost Applied

> [New Feature: Blueprint Archive]

– You can now create and save building designs

– First Blueprint Added: Standard Cottage

Sylas's eyes widened. "That's new."

He accessed the blueprint archive. The interface showed a layout of the model house he'd built, labeled with measurements and construction notes. With this, he could duplicate homes with ease—or teach others to do it.

"This changes everything," he muttered.

He stood, brushed dirt from his pants, and returned to the build site.

"Alright!" he called out. "I've got something to show you."

The villagers turned.

"I've saved the plan for the house we built. If we follow it, every new home will be just as strong. We'll work faster, with fewer mistakes."

He rolled out a parchment version of the blueprint on a nearby bench. People gathered around, squinting at the lines and symbols.

"It's simple once you understand it," Sylas said. "We'll train a few of you to read these. Then you can lead builds of your own."

The idea sparked excitement—and nerves.

"I—I'd like to try," said one boy, barely fifteen.

Sylas nodded. "You will. We all start somewhere."

> [Quest Progress: Encourage Villager Participation – Strong]

[Skill Growth: Mentorship +1]

[Village Morale: +5]

The sun dipped lower, casting golden light over the worksite. By dusk, two houses stood completed, and a third was nearly done. Tired but smiling, the villagers gathered around a small fire to eat.

Sylas sat beside Mira, watching the flames dance.

"They're starting to believe," Mira said softly.

"They're starting to build," Sylas replied.

Above them, the stars began to appear—bright and steady, like the quiet promise of a better future.

> [Quest Progress: Durable Homes Built (2/5)]

[Village Development Tier 1: Stable]

[Next Milestone: Tier 2 – Community Center Required]

Sylas closed his eyes for a moment and breathed deeply. Tomorrow, the real planning would begin again.
