The shadow loomed.
Its presence swallowed the golden light I had just begun to savor, its edges jagged, curling like grasping fingers.
It wasn't the gentle shade of a passing cloud, nor the harmless flicker of a swaying branch. No, this thing was solid, unmoving. Watching.
A predator!
The realization sent a surge as panic spiked through me. I had no lungs to heave, no heart to pound in terror, but every fiber of my being screamed… move! Escape! Do something!
But I couldn't.
I had no legs to flee. No arms to fight back. I was trapped in place, a helpless sprout in an unforgiving world.
Then, just as despair took root…
DING!

[SUNLIGHT ABSORBED- EVOLUTION INITATED!]
~----~
Heat ignited within me, radiating from my core and pulsing through my stem.
My fragile form thickened, my tiny leaves quivering as raw energy surged through them. Something inside me stretched, expanded, awakened. My roots convulsed, twitching and coiling as an ancient, primal force stirred.
A surge of something ancient and carnivorous awakened inside me.
And then…
A new sensation exploded into my mind. A rush of awareness, sharp and sudden, beneath me.
It was like a second pair of eyes had opened; not above, not in the air, but in the soil. The ground, which had once been nothing more than an unmoving prison now thrummed with life.
It felt liberating, to grow. To finally grow and break out of the bounds holding me and limiting me as a seed. To grow into myself was a magical feeling.
I could feel the ground in a way I never had before. Every tremor, every subtle pulse of moisture, every hidden enemy.
I could feel the weave of roots and moisture, the vibrations of burrowing insects, the subtle shifts of the earth itself. I felt omniscient.
And that was when I realized…
The real threat wasn't the shadow above.
It was the presence beneath.
Something had wrapped itself around my roots. Something alive.
A rival plant.
No, not just any plant. A parasite. A vine that had already begun sinking its tendrils into me, drinking, siphoning, stealing the very nutrients I had absorbed.
For a moment, I felt overwhelmed by a familiar emotion, rage. Silent, shimmering rage.
I was so close to dying and I didn't even know!
I hadn't noticed before, too caught up in my own helplessness.
Now? I felt everything.
And I wasn't helpless anymore.
DING!

[EVOLUTION COMPLETE: ROOTED PREDATOR]
[NEW TRAIT UNLOCKED: PARASITIC ROOTS]
>Your roots can pierce other plant life and drain their nutrients.
>Sustained feeding may weaken, kill, or assimilate nearby plant life.
~----~
Realization dawned and it was illuminating. I had been blind before. Blind to the slow, creeping death that had already taken root within me. This parasite, it had been feeding on me before I even knew how to resist.
Rage. It's an emotion you grow familiar with once you live in the outskirts long enough.
And right now? It stayed, simmering, sharp and instinctual.
I had been prey. But no longer.
A new instinct coiled inside me, sharp and insatiable. A raw, alien hunger awakened deep within my roots. Before I could even question it, I lashed out.
For the first time, I moved.
Not by bending, not by swaying in the wind. No, I moved beneath.
My roots, once weak and feeble, moved with purpose. They coiled, snapped, pierced. The rival plant shuddered, its tendrils instinctively constricting in resistance, but it was too late.
It had been hunting me.
I had evolved. And now, I was the predator.
Now, I was hunting it.
I felt it as I sank into its core; a pulse of stolen life followed, raw nutrients flooding into me.
The parasite writhed, desperate to flee, but my roots tightened like a noose. I felt it struggling, its essence flickering like a candle in the wind. It was afraid.
And I was devouring it.
The rush of energy was intoxicating. I could feel myself growing, my once delicate form strengthening. My leaves spread wider, absorbing more sunlight. My stem, once frail, grew firm, my roots anchoring me deeper into the earth.
I had never felt more alive.
I fed.
For the first time in this new life, wherever this was, I was not just surviving.
I was winning.
And as the vine's resistance weakened, as its roots shriveled and the last of its stolen nutrients became mine, I felt something shift deep inside me.
A whisper of a new hunger.
This world was brutal. I had no legs, no claws, no escape. But if everything was trying to feed on me…
Then I would feed first.
The parasite gave one final shudder, and then…
Nothing.
Silence.
I had won.
DING!

[ABSORPTION COMPLETE!]
[NEW SYSTEM FUNCTION UNLOCKED: NUTRIENT POINTS]
>Consuming plant life converts excess energy into Nutrient Points (NP).
>NP can be used for growth, abilities, or further evolution.
~----~
I let that sink in.
A long, deep satisfaction settled over me, but it was quickly replaced by something else… understanding.
The system, it wasn't just some weird, mysterious force handing me power for free. It was rewarding me, for cannibalism. It was rewarding predation.
It wanted me to consume.
'Works for me'. I thought.
I didn't trust it, not yet. But I understood it.
I stared at the empty space where my rival had been, its remnants now part of me. The hunger still churned, restless. My roots twitched, eager, searching.
The world was brutal, I always knew that.
But this world? I don't know much about it yet, but from the little I know, it was even more brutal than normal.
I had no legs, no claws, no escape.
But if everything was trying to feed on me.
Then I would feed first.
And as the last tendrils of the rival vine withered beneath me, I felt the sunlight return, washing over my leaves.
For the first time, I had space to grow.
For the first time, I had power.
And for the first time…
I was hungry for more.
