Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Under Fire

Xia Tian had always been admired—for his generosity, his easygoing nature, and his leadership as student council president in university. Among their classmates, he was held in high esteem. Much of Li Tiantian's popularity stemmed from being his girlfriend.

Now…

They had broken up, and the scandal of Li Tiantian's affair was the talk of the town. In the blink of an eye, she had become everyone's favorite target.

But Li Tiantian didn't regret it.

She could never forget the opulence of a seven-star hotel, the silky richness of foie gras, the melt-in-your-mouth M12 steak, the exquisite sweetness of black truffle caviar.

If time rewound, she'd make the same choice again.

She had only chosen a better life for herself.

She was simply practicing self-love!

How could that be wrong?

"What does it matter to you whose child I'm carrying?"

"Don't think I don't know you've been secretly in love with Xia Tian. You never got him, but I had him for five years. You'll never compare to me, so don't you dare mock me."

Her classmate didn't get angry. She simply adjusted her glasses, stuffed both hands into the pockets of her white coat, and smiled pleasantly.

"Don't be mad."

"We're all classmates. I was just teasing you, you know?"

"By the way, the director was looking for you earlier. If you're free, head over to her office."

"I'm off now. Bye, Little Six."

Little Six.

Lately, her colleagues at the hospital had taken to calling her "Little Six" behind her back—a sneering nickname, implying she wasn't even worthy of being called a mistress or a side piece. She wasn't "Number Three." She was "Number Six."

Infuriating!

Li Tiantian trembled with rage.

She stared at the mirror, at the stunning woman looking back—youthful, with a delicate oval face, big eyes, and seductive cherry-red lips.

So beautiful.

They were just jealous of her.

Jealous because she was more beautiful than any of them.

With that thought, her anger subsided. She dabbed her face dry with a tissue and straightened her white coat.

Yes.

This girl is still the hottest thing on the block.

Knock knock knock!

She rapped on the director's door and peeked her head in.

"Director, you were looking for me?"

"Come in."

Director Yang, head of pediatrics, was fifty this year—a renowned authority in her field, with three decades of experience. She had once had a daughter, who died at the age of six.

Work had kept her too busy to have another child.

Li Tiantian had been born the same year as that lost daughter.

Since Tiantian entered the Children's Hospital, Director Yang had treated her like family, nurturing her as if she were her own, offering guidance without reservation.

Today, Director Yang was scheduled for a level-four surgery. Interns weren't usually allowed to assist in such complex procedures, but a week ago, she had told Li Tiantian she could join. Tiantian had been thrilled ever since.

The more surgeries she assisted with, the faster she could outshine the others.

"Director, is today the surgery?"

"What time does it start? I want to prepare."

Director Yang's expression darkened. She gave her a long, sorrowful look and said quietly:

"No need to prepare."

"I asked you here to deliver the hospital's decision."

"You're being terminated."

"As of today, you are no longer an intern at this hospital."

The words struck like thunder, leaving Li Tiantian stunned, her body trembling, sorrow flickering in her eyes.

"Director, why…"

"What did I do wrong? I'm being fired just because I broke up with my boyfriend?"

Her voice broke.

She looked pitiful, heartbreaking even.

Director Yang let out a heavy sigh. The girl she had cherished, whom she believed to be pure—had turned out to be nothing more than a scheming seductress.

It was a bitter pill to swallow.

"There's been too much bad press lately," she said softly. "You know how it is. Netizens have been coming to the hospital with cameras, claiming to be collecting footage. They're disrupting our daily operations."

"And on top of that, several patient families have filed formal complaints against you, refusing to let you participate in their children's treatment."

"Tiantian, let me give you some advice."

"You're young—wanting to have fun, I can understand. But you're a doctor. You need not only medical ethics, but personal integrity."

"Being a mistress—or whatever they're calling it now—don't let that be part of your story."

Just moments ago, Tiantian had been sad to be dismissed. But at the word integrity, her face turned cold.

"What part of me lacks integrity?"

"All I've done is pursue a better life. What crime is that? I didn't kill anyone, didn't set anything on fire. If I want to be someone's mistress, what's that got to do with anyone else?"

"Did I cheat you out of anything?"

"What right do you have to judge me?"

Director Yang was stunned. She adjusted her glasses and took a hard look at the girl before her.

"What's wrong with you?"

"Can't even tell right from wrong anymore?"

Hmph.

Li Tiantian had always played the role of the sweet, obedient girl to earn the director's favor. But now that she'd been fired—why keep up the act?

"Spare me the lecture."

"You always have that nagging face, all you do is preach. Maybe take some time to clean your teeth, your breath reeks. Maybe that's why your husband left you for someone else."

"The Children's Hospital doesn't want me? Fine. I'm not begging to stay."

With that, Li Tiantian turned and stormed off.

Director Yang clutched her chest, grief-stricken. All those months of nurturing had gone to waste.

For the first time, she wasn't sad about her daughter's early death—because if she had grown up to be this, perhaps it was better she hadn't lived.

Back in the office, Li Tiantian grabbed her Chanel handbag, changed out of her plain trousers into sheer thigh-high stockings and a tight leopard-print mini skirt, slipping into a pair of high heels.

Click, clack, click.

She strutted like a runway model to the doorway, then turned to glance at her colleagues.

And sneered.

"Goodbye, you bunch of ugly trolls that defy the limits of human aesthetics."

"You can all stop feeling insecure now."

One chubby doctor shouted, "Who are you calling an ugly bitch?! Get back here!"

He lunged, but the others held him back.

"Let her go. Didn't you see the drone outside?"

"She wants to humiliate herself? Let her."

Hmph!

Tiantian shot them all a glare and clicked away in her heels.

Unemployed and suddenly adrift, a surge of panic crept in.

Especially now that things had gone sour with Song Pengfei—and she had only a few thousand yuan left. What was she supposed to do next?

Passing a mirror, she caught sight of her reflection.

Damn.

She was breathtaking.

A true femme fatale.

Even without Song Pengfei, there would be others.

A hot girl like her could snap her fingers and money would come pouring in.

With that comforting thought, her mood lifted again, and she swayed her hourglass waist with renewed flair.

And then—

A bucket of cold water splashed over her head.

Soaked her to the bone. Her makeup ran down her face, turning her into a dripping mess. Even her Chanel bag was drenched.

She looked up, furious.

"Who the hell did this?!"

"Come out here, and I swear I'll kill you!"

The whole scene?

Captured, perfectly, by the drone above.
