Chapter 52 - Chapter 52: sealing technique

The next day, Class Two began formal training.

The three students sat in a row, eyes on Mito standing before them.

"In your minds," Mito asked with a smile, "what does a sealing technique look like?"

"I don't know," Maki replied honestly. She had read through the full compendium of sealing techniques that Mito had given her, but most of it went over her head. She understood the form—the structure—but the deeper principles eluded her.

To her, sealing was the most mysterious branch of the entire ninjutsu system.

After all, it was the only known technique that could deal significant damage to Kaguya. The only attack method with real, overwhelming effect.

"There are too many symbols," Hitomi muttered. "They're hard to memorize…"

She had spent hours rereading the book Mito had given her, and she still didn't get it.

I really don't want to learn this…

Tears welled in her eyes as she looked at Mito. Honestly, she was still feeling crushed after witnessing Naori's genius.

Maki glanced at Hinata, her eyes lingering on the cursed seal hidden beneath the bandage on her forehead.

That mark—it was a sealing technique.

The key to the Caged Bird Seal now lay in Hitomi's hands, but whether she could undo it… would depend on effort, time, and understanding.

Normal Hyūga wouldn't even know this kind of knowledge existed.

Which made Maki even more suspicious of Hitomi's background.

Still, who cares? It didn't concern her directly.

"Hitomi, don't say that," Mito said gently. "Even if it's hard, you must learn it."

Then she looked to Naori. "Sealing techniques are a form of ninjutsu. They're used in battle."

Naori nodded and answered like a proper kunoichi. "They're tactical tools in combat."

Mito paused in thought for a moment, then spoke again.

"To most people, sealing techniques seem complex and difficult to learn—dense, painful even. But that's only because they haven't grasped the essence of sealing."

She raised a hand, extended one finger. "In truth, the essence is very simple—so simple it's almost laughable. No matter how many forms it takes, every sealing technique exists for one reason."

At that point, the answer should've been obvious.

"True sealing," Mito said, "requires more than intellect. It requires spiritual insight. Anyone can memorize what came before—but creating something new? That takes more. Do you know what the essence of sealing is?"

The three girls fell silent, each lost in thought.

Eventually, Hitomi, frustrated and unsure, whispered, "Is it… sealing? The essence is the seal?"

A surface-level guess.

Mito simply smiled at her kindly. Hinata lowered her head, embarrassed.

"Is it about blocking the flow of chakra?" Naori offered. She had some hands-on experience with basic sealing techniques.

"You're close," Mito replied, "but not quite."

Then she looked to Maki with expectation.

"To hide things," Maki said. "So that no one can find them."

Mito's eyes lit up.

"That's right, Maki," she said, pleased. "You nailed it."

"The essence of sealing is concealment. Hiding something so thoroughly that no one—not even the caster—can find it. That's the core principle."

"See? It's not so complicated after all."

She smiled and continued, "Let me give you an example."

"There are even-numbered seals—like the Two-Layer, Four-Image, and Eight-Trigram Seals. Then there are odd-numbered ones—like the One-Column, Three-Element, Five-Phase, and Nine-Palace Seals."

"Take the Nine-Palace Seal. It involves nine numbered nodes, from one to nine. When sealing, the numbers are scrambled. To undo the seal, you must rearrange them into their correct order."

"It's like a classic Nine-Palace puzzle: you align the numbers so that all rows and columns add up to the same total, and the seal breaks."

"Now imagine," she went on, "that instead of numbers, you're working with chakra nodes—blurry, unstable ones. Suddenly, the difficulty skyrockets. You have to calculate the 'value' of chakra at each point, align them perfectly, and then place every node in the right position to break the seal."

"To put it simply," Mito began, "a seal is like a lock."

"The easiest way to make that lock harder to pick is to add more layers—more locks."

"One strand becomes two, three elements become four symbols, and five elements become the nine palaces. These combinations and permutations create complex structures that test the decoder's understanding. The more advanced the knowledge, the further you can build it up."

"Eventually, the complexity can become overwhelming—even hopeless—for someone trying to undo it."

"This type of sealing technique is what we call ingenious sealing."

"Does that make sense?"

Maki and Naori nodded immediately. Hitomi, though a bit lost, nodded as well, trying to keep up.

"You may feel like you missed something," Mito reassured, "but don't worry. Right now, I just want you to grasp the basic concept of sealing."

"Now, why go through the trouble of using such complex locking methods instead of just sealing something directly?"

"First, it's important to understand this: the person who is sealed can never undo the seal on their own. All seals must be broken from the outside."

"So then you might think—why not just break the seal open by force?"

"But here's the catch: If you do that, there's no guarantee that what's inside will remain intact. And that small chance of losing it? That's what deters people. That's what we take advantage of."

"So why make seals like this in the first place?"

"It's because the fundamental goal of a sealing technique is to stop the flow of chakra. It's a simple act—but because it's so simple, it's also easy to break. That's why we add extra layers—casings, locks—to protect it."

Mito continued, her tone calm and clear.

"So then, is it okay to leave something unsealed?"

"It is. That's another kind of sealing technique."

"Take the Four Red Yang Formation, for instance."

"The core idea there is to thicken the shell—make it so strong that nobody can break through. You can see it, but you can't open it. And that alone is enough to hide what's inside."

"This method consumes an enormous amount of chakra, which makes it inefficient. In that sense, it's actually not a very clever sealing method. It's brute-force and straightforward."

"And once you reach that point, whether the chakra is flowing or not hardly matters anymore."

"So, are there other kinds?"

"There are."

"For example, there's the transfer-type."

"Inside the Four Symbol Seal, once activated, the target gets transported into a different dimension—what some call the underworld. The result is the same: the object is hidden, unreachable."

"And then there's an even more extreme version—the Dead Demon Consuming Seal. To activate it, you must offer your life. And to undo it, someone else must pay the same price. It's so costly that almost no one dares to break it, which makes it very secure."

Maki blinked, immediately thinking of Orochimaru.

"In short, sealing techniques fall into a few main types."

"Then there's the Vajra Blockade—unique to the Uzumaki clan. It's a bit different. Unlike other seals that focus on hiding, this one is like a tug-of-war."

"It's about overpowering the opponent's chakra by forcibly restricting it."

"To make it more effective, the seal actively suppresses the target's chakra as the struggle continues."

"Earlier, Maki's bugs bit through my Vajra Blockade. Do you know why?" Mito asked.

"Was it because there were too many of them for the seal to keep up?" Naori guessed.

"Was it because Maki wasn't actually sealed?" Hitomi added.

"No," Mito replied, "It's because the 'container' was too big and had too many cracks. The bugs just slipped through."

"The Vajra Blockade was originally designed to restrain tailed beasts. Ordinary containers can't hold something that powerful. So, the chains were created to specifically target key chakra nodes."

"Once restrained, the target can then be sealed into a specially crafted vessel."

"But when used on people, it's often ineffective. It's hard enough to catch a person with it—let alone tiny insects you can't even see."

Maki blinked again.

So that's why… The parasites don't even have chakra.

That alone makes the Vajra Blockade useless against them.
