Chapter 66 - Chapter 65: Whispers of the Northern Sovereign ( Season 1 )

The frozen silence that had claimed the Southern Mist District now felt like a distant, terrible nightmare to the citizens of the Central Imperial Capital. Yet, as the midday sun began its slow descent toward the western horizon, the chill lingering in the air did not dissipate. It clung to the stone walls, seeped through the gilded tiles of noble estates, and rested like an invisible blade against the napes of fifty million souls.

In the grand tea houses of the outer ring, where mere hours ago young cultivators had laughed and made lighthearted wagers on the life of a "nameless northern wanderer," no one spoke above a hushed, trembling whisper.

"Did you hear...?" a young noble from the Mu Clan muttered, his knuckles white as he held a steaming cup of spiritual tea that was rapidly losing its warmth. "The Imperial Guard Directorate has put the entire city on Stage-1 Martial Lock. All spatial transport arrays have been shut down by order of the Ancestral Court."

"Stage-1 Martial Lock?" another young cultivator whispered in shock, his eyes darting toward the heavy wooden doors of the establishment. "That hasn't been invoked since the Great Demon War four centuries ago! Is... is it really because of that man?"

"That man?" An elder seated at an adjacent table let out a raspy, bitter laugh. "Do not call him 'that man' if you value your tongue, boy. The survival reports from the Southern Mist District have already reached the high clan councils. He walked through a Stage-5 Spatial Lock like soft silk. He erased ten steel war-barges of the Blood-Blade Sect with a single step. And when Patriarch Yan Crimson-Heaven and Sect Master Blood-Gouger unleashed their ultimate domains..."

The elder paused, his voice dropping so low it was almost lost to the draft sweeping through the hall. "...he drew three inches of his heavy blade. Three inches. That was all it took to reduce two Stage-5 Peak Sovereigns to frozen dust."

The surrounding young cultivators gasped, cold sweat breaking out across their brows.

"What... what is his title?" someone asked, his voice shaking. "Who is he?"

The elder slowly raised his head, his eyes filled with profound dread as he looked toward the floating golden palace in the clouds. "The survivors of the Imperial Guard are calling him the Northern Sovereign. A man who carries the absolute frost of the ancient northern wilderness. And he is walking among us right now."

While rumors flared like wildfire through the panicked city, the reality on the streets was strangely quiet.

In the alleys of the Third Commercial District—a quiet, old neighborhood nested between the grand trading houses and the high inner walls—the busy market stalls had been abandoned. Capped crates of spirit fruits, unguarded bolts of silk, and open jars of rare herbs sat along the cobblestone paths, left behind by terrified merchants who had fled to their homes.

Through this ghost-town avenue walked two solitary figures.

Li-Wen moved with unhurried, measured steps. His dark traveler's coat was plain, devoid of any noble insignia or grand sect emblems, yet every step he took seemed to align with the subtle rhythm of the earth itself. The small, ancient northern rune hidden beneath his collar pulsed with a soft, steady rhythm, emitting a thin, invisible layer of spatial force that repelled the ambient heat of the city.

Beside him, Xiao-Yue trotted along happily, her small hand tightly wrapped around Li-Wen's index and middle fingers. In her other hand, she held her pink lotus lantern. The delicate jade petals of the lantern, which had previously only flickered with a faint crimson light, were now glowing with a rich, radiant warmth. A gentle, sweet fragrance of blooming lotus flowers drifted around her, forming a small, two-yard barrier of absolute serenity that protected her from the gloomy, tense atmosphere of the capital.

"Brother Li-Wen," Xiao-Yue said, her sweet, innocent voice breaking the quiet of the empty street. "The little light in my lantern is dancing."

Li-Wen stopped, his dark, quiet eyes lowering to look at the little girl. He glanced at the pink lotus lantern, noticing how the crimson flame inside was swirling in a precise, three-tiered spiral—a distinct sign of a bloodline resonance.

"It is responding to something close," Li-Wen said softly. "The bloodline of your ancestors is buried deep beneath this city. They used the power of your clan's Fire-Lotus Core to feed their golden dragon veins."

Xiao-Yue tilted her small head, her bright eyes blinking with curiosity. "Is that why the ground feels hot under my shoes?"

"Yes," Li-Wen replied, reaching down to gently pat her head. "They stole what belonged to your people to build their sky palace. But today, we take it back."

Xiao-Yue nodded obediently, trusting his words without a single doubt. "Okay. When we get it back, can we go back to the snow mountains? I miss the blue snowflakes."

A rare, extremely soft flicker of emotion passed through Li-Wen's dark eyes before disappearing back into his usual icy stoicism. "We will go back. But first, we need a place to rest for the night. Your bloodline is awakening its second tier, and your body needs time to refine the energy."

He looked toward the end of the narrow street, where a weathered, two-story stone courtyard stood hidden beneath the shade of several ancient iron-willow trees. The courtyard had long been abandoned, its wooden gates hanging loosely on rusted iron hinges, covered in thick ivy. It was a place forgotten by the bustling empire above—a perfect sanctuary amidst the storm.

With a gentle tug of Xiao-Yue's hand, Li-Wen stepped into the quiet courtyard.

As soon as they crossed the threshold, Li-Wen raised his left hand and flicked his thumb against his palm.

SWISH—!

A subtle, hair-thin line of sapphire-blue light shot out from his fingertips, tracing the entire perimeter of the stone courtyard. Instantly, an invisible barrier of absolute spatial frost enveloped the old estate. From the outside, the courtyard appeared completely normal, but any spiritual senses, divine consciousness, or tracking arrays sweeping across the city would hit the barrier and slide right off, registering nothing but empty space.

Li-Wen walked into the main hall, swept away centuries of dust with a soft wave of his sleeve, and sat down cross-legged on a clean stone platform.

Xiao-Yue immediately sat beside him, pulling her small knees to her chest and resting her head against his side. The continuous journey and the heavy spiritual pressure of the city had finally taken a toll on her small frame. Her eyelids grew heavy, and within moments, her breathing turned soft and rhythmic.

However, as she fell asleep, the pink lotus lantern resting in her lap began to pulse with increasing intensity!

HUMMM—!

A brilliant, ruby-red light erupted from the lantern, wrapping around Xiao-Yue's small body like a protective cocoon of liquid flame! The temperature inside the cocoon soared, yet the heat did not scorch her clothes or burn her skin. Instead, tiny, glowing lotus runes began to emerge on her fair skin, crawling up her wrists and settling around her collarbone.

Li-Wen remained still, his dark eyes watching the transformation closely.

He knew what was happening. The Fire-Lotus Bloodline was an ancient, tier-6 primeval lineage that had once dominated the southern lands before the rise of the Crimson-Sun Clan. When the empire betrayed and slaughtered her clan, they sealed the remaining bloodline vitality deep inside the Imperial Dragon Veins. Now, as they drew closer to the heart of the city, the ancestral energy beneath the earth was naturally responding to its true heir.

Xiao-Yue's small brow furrowed slightly as a soft bead of sweat rolled down her cheek. The sudden influx of ancestral energy was trying to force open her unopened meridians all at once.

Li-Wen did not hesitate. He raised his right hand, placing his index finger gently against the center of her forehead.

CRACKLE—!

A thread of pure, icy-blue Northern Origin Qi flowed gently from his finger into her body. It was not a violent, destructive cold, but a soothing, absolute stabilization force. Like a cool stream calming a raging fire, Li-Wen's frost Qi wrapped around the volatile bloodline energy, guiding it smoothly through her small meridians, preventing her body from overheating.

"Rest," Li-Wen murmured, his low voice carrying a soothing mental frequency. "No one in this world can touch you while I am here."

As if hearing his reassurance, Xiao-Yue's tense expression relaxed, a sweet, peaceful smile returning to her sleeping face. The ruby-red fire-lotus cocoon gradually absorbed into her skin, leaving behind a subtle, glowing lotus mark at the base of her neck. Her aura, which had previously been that of an ordinary mortal child, shifted subtly, radiating a pure, pristine spiritual pressure that rivaled a Stage-2 master.

The second tier of the Fire-Lotus Bloodline had successfully awakened.

While Xiao-Yue slept peacefully in the hidden courtyard, the high-altitude realm above the Central Capital was experiencing a shift of seismic proportions.

Deep within the floating structure of the Golden Dragon Palace, in a grand subterranean hall known as the Chamber of the Nine Veins, a terrifying event was unfolding.

The chamber was a massive, ancient cave built directly over the central golden dragon vein of the continent. Nine colossal, golden dragon statues carved from divine ore stood around a boiling pool of liquid solar magma. For three thousand years, this pool had supplied the imperial family with endless core energy, allowing their patriarchs to reach the realm of Stage-5 Sovereigns with ease.

At this moment, however, the boiling solar magma was violently thrashing!

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Massive plumes of golden fire erupted from the pool, slamming against the chamber walls! The nine dragon statues began to crack, glowing ruby-red light leaking from their stone eyes!

Standing at the edge of the pool, dressed in his ancient red hemp robes, was the Imperial Prime Ancestor, Yan Sun-God. Surrounding him were nine elderly men dressed in grand scholar robes—the surviving Stage-5 High-Grade Elders of the imperial ancestral court.

"Prime Ancestor!" the leading scholar elder shouted above the roaring thunder of the magma pool, holding a cracked jade divination plate in his shaking hands. "The ancestral dragon vein is rejecting our imperial seal! The dormant Fire-Lotus origin beneath the seventh vein has woken up!"

The Prime Ancestor's burning golden eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He looked down at his own withered palm, where a small, icy blue mark had appeared on his skin—a trace of the residual spatial chill that Marshal Zhao Dragon-Crest had brought back from the Southern Mist District.

"It is not just rejecting the seal," the Prime Ancestor said, his voice cold and heavy like falling mountains. "The child... she is refining the bloodline core. That nameless northern wanderer is using his own origin Qi to help her awaken the Fire-Lotus Primeval Body!"

"What?!" another elder gasped in sheer horror. "If she awakens the Fire-Lotus Primeval Body, the nine dragon veins beneath the capital will tear themselves apart to return to her! The entire floating city will collapse!"

"Then we shall give her no time to complete it," the Prime Ancestor spoke, his tone dripping with absolute, ruthless resolve.

He raised his wooden walking stick and slammed it violently against the ground!

RUMBLE—!

A terrifying, golden shockwave exploded from his body, forcing the nine Stage-5 elders to step back several paces! The magma pool ceased its thrashing, forcibly suppressed by the old monster's terrifying Stage-5 Peak cultivation!

"Pass my imperial decree to the Heaven-Shatter Tower," the Prime Ancestor ordered, his sun-like eyes glowing with a murderous sheen. "Assemble the leaders of the five grand protector sects. Unlock the Grand Spatial Vault and retrieve the 'Nine-Sun Heaven-Burning Spear'."

The scholars gasped, their faces turning deathly pale.

"The Nine-Sun Heaven-Burning Spear?!" the leading elder stammered. "Prime Ancestor, that is a Stage-6 semi-divine relic left behind by the Founding Emperor! To activate it requires the sacrifice of thirty thousand spirit-knights and three thousand years of imperial luck!"

"If the empire falls, what use is imperial luck?!" the Prime Ancestor roared, his voice shaking the subterranean chamber! "That man... he is no ordinary Stage-5 Sovereign! The aura he released in the Southern Mist District carries the true law of 'Absolute Chill'! He is a survivor of the Northern Abyssal Sovereign Court!"

The word "Northern Abyssal Sovereign Court" hit the chamber like an apocalyptic thunderbolt!

The elders stood paralyzed, their eyes wide with legendary horror. In the ancient texts preserved in the deepest vaults of the palace, the Northern Abyssal Sovereign Court was a mythical entity from the Upper Spirit Realm—a terrifying power that had once frozen entire continental worlds during the primordial era!

"He... he comes from the Upper Realm?!" an elder whispered, his knees trembling so hard he almost collapsed.

"It does not matter where he comes from," the Prime Ancestor sneered, his hands clenching his walking stick until the wood groaned under the pressure. "This is the Southern Continent. The spatial laws here are suppressed by the world boundary! No matter how high his former realm was, in this lower world, his cultivation is bound by the same ceiling as mine!"

He turned his gaze toward the sky above the city, where dark, violent clouds were beginning to gather, tinged with a bloody crimson hue.

"He wants to bring that brat to the Dragon-Vein Estate? Good," the Prime Ancestor smiled, a grotesque, bloodthirsty grin stretching across his wrinkled face. "We will set the 'Nineteenth-Level Sun-Bound Formation' at the Golden Dragon Bridge. When he steps onto that bridge, we will ignite the entire central dragon vein and burn him, his frost, and that brat into absolute nonexistence!"

Night finally fell over the Central Imperial Capital.

Normally, the night in the imperial city was a spectacle of endless lights. Thousands of floating lanterns would illuminate the high towers, grand music would ring out from the pleasure barges along the central canal, and cultivators would soar through the night sky on glowing flying swords.

Tonight, however, the capital was dark.

Not a single light shone from the residential quarters. The streets were dead quiet, saved only for the rhythmic, heavy march of armored boots. Thousands of elite Sun-Guardians, clad in heavy volcanic bronze plate, took up positions along every rooftop, every watchtower, and every bridge leading to the inner palace.

High above the clouds, hovering directly over the Golden Dragon Bridge, five massive floating towers shone with terrifying, golden light. These were the Heaven-Shatter Towers—the ultimate offensive structures of the empire, capable of concentrating the spiritual energy of a hundred miles into a single, world-destroying beam of solar flame.

Surrounding the towers were five majestic figures standing in mid-air, each radiating the distinct, overwhelming aura of a Stage-5 High-Grade Sovereign. They were the Sect Masters of the five grand protector sects—the absolute peak of the empire's military power!

They stood in formation, their sharp, divine senses locking onto every inch of the city below, waiting for the slightest ripple of spatial movement.

Yet, inside the small, abandoned courtyard in the Third Commercial District, the atmosphere remained tranquil.

The moonlight filtered down through the leaves of the old iron-willow trees, casting soft, silvery shadows across the stone floor.

Li-Wen stood by the wooden window, his hands resting casually behind his back. He looked out into the silent, dark city, his quiet gaze effortlessly penetrating through the miles of dark alleyways, locking onto the five floating Heaven-Shatter Towers in the sky.

He did not draw his blade. He did not channel his Qi. He simply stood there, like a lonely pine tree atop a snowy mountain, standing tall against the gathering storm.

Behind him, a soft rustle of cloth sounded as Xiao-Yue slowly sat up on the stone platform.

She rubbed her small eyes with her fists, yawning softly before looking up at Li-Wen's tall back. The lotus mark on her neck gave off a gentle, comforting warmth, and her bright eyes were clearer and more luminous than ever before.

"Brother Li-Wen," she called out softly, her small feet swinging off the edge of the platform. "I had a dream."

Li-Wen did not turn around, but his voice was soft. "What did you dream of?"

"I dreamed of a big golden bridge," Xiao-Yue said, pointing her little finger toward the direction of the Inner Palace. "And a lot of bad men in big shiny armor were standing there with long spears. They were waiting for us."

Li-Wen slowly turned his head, his dark, indifferent eyes meeting hers in the soft moonlight.

"They are waiting to die, Xiao-Yue," Li-Wen said calmly, taking a step toward her and holding out his hand. "Come. The night is quiet, and the road to the bridge is empty."

Xiao-Yue smiled brightly, sliding off the platform and placing her tiny hand back into his broad, calloused palm. She picked up her pink lotus lantern, which now burned with a quiet, steady ruby flame that no wind could ever extinguish.

Together, the solitary traveler and the small girl stepped out of the old courtyard, walking silently into the dark, waiting streets of the capital.
