Chapter 77 - Chapter 76: The Hearth and the Mountain Pass ( Season 1 )

The small timber cabin at the edge of the village plaza was built from heavy pine logs, its thick oak door bearing the quiet scars of many harsh mountain winters. Inside, a roaring fire crackled in the wide stone hearth, casting a rich, golden amber glow over the rustic wooden benches and the dried herbs hanging from the exposed ceiling beams.

The biting, absolute cold of the Western Continent's outer border mountains stayed outside, trapped behind the frosty windowpanes.

Xiao-Yue sat on a long wooden bench right beside the hearth, her small feet dangling a few inches above the floor. Her pink lotus lantern rested safely on a clean oak table beside her, its ruby flame burning with a soft, content warmth that seemed to harmonize with the rhythmic popping of the firewood.

In her small, gloved hands, she carefully held a large, steaming clay bowl filled to the brim with pale yellow, aromatic mountain ginger soup. Tiny specks of crushed wild peppercorns and sweet honey drifted on the surface, releasing a fragrant steam that filled the cozy cabin.

"Mmm! It smells so sweet and spicy!" Xiao-Yue beamed, taking a cautious, tiny sip from the heavy wooden spoon. Her eyes widened with pure delight as the rich heat spread down her throat, bringing a flush of warm pink back to her cheeks. She quickly cupped the heavy clay bowl with both hands and turned to face the bench beside her. "Brother Li-Wen! Take a big sip! The old grandfather made it super hot, just like we wanted!"

Sitting silently on the adjacent wooden bench was Li-Wen.

He had removed his dark, heavy traveler's coat, laying it across the back of the bench. His upper frame was clothed in a simple, charcoal-grey inner tunic that clung to the dense, iron-like contours of his broad shoulders and back. On the table beside him rested his dark, unsheathed heavy blade, its pitch-black iron scabbard reflecting the warm, flickering firelight in dull, silent glints.

Though his posture remained completely relaxed—his right arm resting casually on his knee—his internal physical senses were working with absolute, razor-sharp precision.

Beneath his charcoal tunic, at the critical junction of his lower spine, the dark-violet Void-Piercing Needle remained safely frozen. The microscopic shell of absolute-zero sapphire ice he had formed around it held the void poison in complete stasis. However, whenever Li-Wen absorbed the natural heat of the room or took a breath of warm air, his internal body heat naturally tried to balance the localized cold around his spine.

Li-Wen reached out with his broad palm, taking the steaming clay bowl from Xiao-Yue's hands. He raised it to his lips and drank half the bowl in a single, calm gulp.

The fiery heat of the mountain ginger and wild peppercorns coursed down his esophagus, spreading through his stomach. To a normal cultivator, such mundane heat was meaningless. But to Li-Wen, who used his physical body's absolute-zero marrow to suppress the void needle, the mundane warmth acted as a subtle, soothing anchor for his physical constitution, stabilizing his internal thermal equilibrium without disturbing the frozen shell around his meridians.

"It is acceptable," Li-Wen said softly, his deep voice carrying a flat, comfortable resonance into the quiet room. He placed the half-empty clay bowl back onto the wooden table.

"Acceptable?!" Xiao-Yue giggled, swinging her small legs back and forth. "It's super delicious! Look, your cheeks aren't as pale as when we were on the ocean boat!" She leaned over, her large, clear eyes peering closely at his face, then looked down at his grey tunic. "Does your back feel better now?"

"My back was never broken, Xiao-Yue," Li-Wen replied smoothly, reaching out his broad thumb to gently wipe a tiny droplet of soup from the corner of her lips. "Eat your soup before it grows cold."

"Okay!" She nodded happily, happily digging back into her clay bowl with her wooden spoon.

At that moment, the heavy oak door of the cabin creaked open slowly, letting in a brief gust of crisp, snow-scented morning air.

The old village elder—whose name was Elder Wu—stepped inside with extreme caution, carrying a heavy wooden tray lined with warm, baked barley cakes, cured mountain deer meat, and a fresh jug of boiled spring water. He was accompanied by two young hunters from the village, both of whom kept their eyes firmly fixed on the floorboards, trembling slightly in pure, reverent awe of the solitary man sitting by the fire.

They had seen fourteen Stage-3 and Stage-4 elite marauders atomized into frost-dust with a single step. To these mountain mortals, the man sitting in their simple cabin was not merely a powerful martial artist—he was a living, walking deity of the ancient world.

"Exalted... Exalted Immortal," Elder Wu stammered, placing the wooden tray onto the far end of the oak table with trembling, reverent hands. He immediately stepped back three paces and bowed deeply, his forehead nearly touching his knees. "The village women have prepared our finest winter rations for you and the young mistress. Please... forgive the humble quality of our mountain fare."

Li-Wen did not look at the food, but his dark, indifferent eyes drifted toward the old man. "Stand up, Elder. You do not owe me salutations."

"Lord Immortal's mercy saved our entire bloodline from extinction!" Elder Wu said emotionally, slowly straightening his bent spine, though his posture remained deeply humble. "If the Iron-Blood Guild had taken our children, our village would have perished in the snow before the month's end. But... but Exalted Lord..."

The old man's voice trailed off, a look of deep, anxious concern darkening his weathered, wrinkled face.

"Speak," Li-Wen commanded flatly.

Elder Wu swallowed hard, glancing nervously toward the snow-covered windows outside. "Lord Immortal... the fourteen marauders you destroyed today were only the scouts of the Iron-Blood Guild. Their main stronghold lies thirty miles west of here, at the throat of the Black-Crag Pass—the only road that leads through the outer mountain range into the central domains of the Western Continent."

The old man paused, taking a ragged breath before continuing. "Their Grand Master, known as the Blood-Axe Tyrant, is a genuine Stage-5 High Sovereign who has ruled these border mountains for over fifty years! He commands over a thousand rogue cultivators and controls the entire trade route! News of his scouts' death will reach the pass by sunset... When the Blood-Axe Tyrant learns of this, he will mobilize his entire army to block the pass!"

Hearing the old elder's warning, Xiao-Yue stopped chewing her barley cake, looking up with curious eyes. "Another big bad leader at the mountain pass?"

Li-Wen's expression did not alter by a single fraction. He picked up a piece of the warm barley cake, broke off a small piece, and handed it to Xiao-Yue before picking up his clay bowl once more.

"Let him mobilize," Li-Wen said simply. His voice was so calm, so devoid of any tension or concern, that it felt as if the old elder had merely reported a light dusting of snow upon the roof.

Elder Wu blinked, marveling at the solitary man's absolute, unshakeable indifference. He hesitated for a moment, then reached into his heavy fur coat and pulled out a small, wrapped bundle of yellowing, oiled parchment.

"Exalted Lord," Elder Wu said respectfully, holding out the parchment with both hands. "Since you intend to travel west through the Black-Crag Pass, please accept this. It is an ancient map of the border mountain paths, carved by our ancestors two hundred years ago. It shows a hidden, abandoned mining tunnel that bypasses the main fortress at the pass. If Lord Immortal wishes to avoid unnecessary delay..."

Li-Wen did not reach for the map. He looked at the old elder's sincere, weathered eyes.

"Keep your map, Elder," Li-Wen replied softly, his raspy voice carrying an immovable, ancient weight. "I do not hide in tunnels."

Elder Wu froze, his mouth opening slightly, but no words came out. He slowly retracted his hands, bowing deeply once more with profound respect. "This humble old man understands. Lord Immortal's path is straight and unbending."

By noon, the heavy winter clouds that had hovered over the border mountains began to part slightly, allowing the pale, cold winter sun to cast crisp shadows across the endless fields of white snow.

At the edge of the village, the fifty villagers—men, women, and children—had gathered in two long rows along the snow-covered path, standing in complete, reverent silence. They watched quietly as the solitary figure in the dark traveler's coat walked out from the timber cabin.

Li-Wen had put his heavy traveler's coat back on, the torn fabric along his shoulder pinned neatly together. His dark, unsheathed heavy blade was strapped securely across his broad back. Walking beside him, holding his broad fingers tightly with her small gloved hand, was little Xiao-Yue. Her pink lotus lantern hung from her left wrist, its ruby light glowing brightly against the pale white snow.

Elder Wu stepped forward, holding a small cloth sack filled with freshly baked barley cakes and dried mountain berries.

"Exalted Lord... young mistress," Elder Wu said softly, offering the sack to Xiao-Yue. "May the mountain spirits clear your path."

Xiao-Yue took the small sack with a bright, sweet smile, hugging it against her chest. "Thank you, old grandfather! The ginger soup was the best!"

Li-Wen nodded once toward the old elder—a brief, silent gesture of farewell.

Without another word, the solitary Northern Sovereign and the small girl stepped onto the winding mountain trail, leaving the peaceful timber village behind, heading straight toward the towering, snow-draped peaks of the western horizon.

Thirty miles west, at the mouth of the Black-Crag Pass.

The landscape here was vastly different from the quiet pine forests of the lower slopes. The pass was a narrow, terrifying gorge squeezed between two three-thousand-foot cliffs of solid, pitch-black ironstone. The wind inside the gorge howled like a thousand dying demons, blowing blinding sheets of black ice dust through the narrow gap.

Spanning the two-hundred-yard mouth of the gorge was a colossal fortress built entirely of black iron and jagged volcanic granite—the Blood-Iron Citadel!

High atop the fifty-foot-thick iron ramparts of the citadel, a massive blood-red banner fluttered violently in the mountain gale, bearing the emblem of a dripping battleaxe crossed over a wolf skull.

Inside the citadel's grand hall, a terrifying atmosphere of pure, suffocating bloodlust hung heavy in the air.

Dozens of braziers filled with burning monster fat illuminated the dark stone hall in eerie, flickering shades of orange and black. Standing along both sides of the hall were over fifty Stage-3 and Stage-4 elite captains of the Iron-Blood Guild, clad in heavy spiked armor, their hands gripping lethal weapons, their eyes burning with brutal, savage energy.

At the far end of the hall, resting upon a throne carved from the skull of a Stage-5 mountain earth-dragon, sat the ruler of the border mountains—the Blood-Axe Tyrant!

He was a terrifying mountain of a man, standing over seven feet tall, his massive frame clad in thick, obsidian-grade steel armor. His bare arms were thick as tree trunks, covered in jagged battle scars and glowing red blood-tattoos. Resting against his knee was a massive, six-foot-long double-headed battleaxe forged from dark blood-iron, radiating a thick, nauseating cloud of crimson energy that caused the surrounding air to boil!

He was a genuine Stage-5 High-Grade Sovereign—a ruthless monster who had slaughtered his way to the top of the Western Continent's border domain!

Standing before the throne was a terrified, blood-soaked scout who had been stationed at the mountain watchtower. The scout was kneeling on the cold stone floor, trembling so violently that his iron armor clattered against the ground.

"S-Say it again..." The Blood-Axe Tyrant's voice rumbled out like rolling thunder, causing the flames in the braziers to flare wildly! His blood-red eyes glared down at the scout like a primordial beast about to devour its prey. "Captain Iron-Jaw... and his entire fifteen-man vanguard... were wiped out?!"

"Y-Yes, Grand Master!" The scout wept in absolute terror, pressing his face against the stone floor. "Our distant surveillance eagle recorded the scene! A man in a dark coat carrying a heavy blade... accompanied by a small mortal child holding a pink lantern! He... he didn't even draw his weapon, Grand Master! He took two steps... and Captain Iron-Jaw and fourteen experts were atomized into frost-dust in less than twenty seconds!"

BOOOOM—!

The Blood-Axe Tyrant slammed his broad fist onto the armrest of his dragon-skull throne! The massive dragon skull cracked open, exploding into shower of bone fragments!

"Fools! Idiots!" The Blood-Axe Tyrant roared, his voice shaking the entire iron citadel! His terrifying Stage-5 High-Grade aura exploded from his body like a volcano, flooding the hall with a wave of searing, blood-red solar energy that forced the fifty elite captains to drop to their knees!

"Did you think I wouldn't recognize who that man is?!" The Blood-Axe Tyrant sneered, his face twisting into a grotesque mask of hysterical excitement and greedy ambition!

He stood up from his throne, lifting his six-foot blood-iron battleaxe with one hand as if it weighed nothing at all!

"He is the Northern Sovereign! The walking calamity from the Eastern Seas who atomized the joint vanguard of the seven great sects!" The Tyrant's booming laugh echoed through the iron fortress like thunder! "The secret transmission from the Western Guilds arrived two hours ago! His meridians were pierced by Ancestor Shadow-Void's Void-Piercing Needle! Ninety percent of his cultivation base is completely locked just to keep that void poison from destroying his heart!"

The fifty elite captains in the hall gasped, their terrified expressions instantly replacing by greedy, bloodthirsty gleams!

"A crippled Sovereign!" One Stage-4 Peak captain grinned savagely, stepping forward. "He travels with a mere mortal child! He was forced to use pure physical force to kill Iron-Jaw because he couldn't channel his spiritual Qi!"

"EXACTLY!" The Blood-Axe Tyrant roared, his blood-red battleaxe flaring with a ten-foot blade of boiling crimson fire! "He is relying entirely on his physical body! But this is the Black-Crag Pass! My Grand Blood-Iron Suppression Array covers the entire three-mile gorge! Inside my domain, even physical strength is suppressed by three hundred times!"

He pointed his massive axe toward the heavy iron doors of the citadel, his voice ringing with absolute, tyrannical authority!

"ALL ONE THOUSAND WARRIORS OF THE IRON-BLOOD GUILD—ASSEMBLE AT THE RAMPARTS!" The Blood-Axe Tyrant screamed, his red eyes burning with wild madness! "Man the heavy soul-shattering ballistas! Activate the ancient iron suppression runes! Today, the head of the Northern Sovereign and the primordial relic he carries shall belong to the Iron-Blood Guild! WE WILL CARVE OUR NAME INTO THE HISTORY OF THE WESTERN CONTINENT!"

"KILL! KILL! KILL!"

The one thousand rogue cultivators inside the fortress roared in unison, their deafening battle cries shaking the iron walls, echoing far out into the snow-covered gorge!

An hour later.

At the entrance of the two-hundred-yard-wide Black-Crag Pass.

The howling mountain wind blew sheets of dark ice dust across the narrow gorge. High above on the fifty-foot iron ramparts of the Blood-Iron Citadel, one thousand heavily armored rogue cultivators stood in full battle formation!

Dozens of colossal, fifty-foot soul-shattering ballistas were drawn tight, their massive iron bolts glowing with toxic red murder intent, all pointed directly down at the narrow stone path below!

Standing at the absolute center of the main gatehouse was the seven-foot Blood-Axe Tyrant, his massive double-headed axe resting on his shoulder, his blood-red eyes glaring down into the drifting white snow mist like a hawk watching its prey.

Out from the howling wind and drifting snow... two solitary figures emerged onto the narrow stone path.

Li-Wen walked with his calm, unhurried stride, his dark traveler's coat fluttering gently against the icy gale. His hands were tucked casually into his coat pockets, his dark, indifferent eyes fixed on the towering iron citadel blocking his way.

Beside him, little Xiao-Yue took her steady steps, her left hand holding her pink lotus lantern high, its warm ruby light creating a small, cozy circle of comfort amidst the howling dark wind.

"Brother Li-Wen," Xiao-Yue whispered softly, looking up at the colossal iron wall and the one thousand armored men standing above with weapons drawn. "The big black wall is blocking the road again."

Li-Wen did not slow his pace. He did not draw his weapon.

"It is just iron, Xiao-Yue," Li-Wen said flatly, his deep voice carrying a quiet, absolute resonance across the frozen gorge. "Iron breaks.
