Chapter 3 - Only A Month To Live?

After Lusi had left, I remained where I was, staring at the beautiful courtyard. The air smelled of nice flowers and baked bread from the kitchen at the corner of the mansion.

So far, I am in a fantasy world where magic is practiced. I am an adopted child of the Mu family, the owner of this body doesn't want to have anything to do with magic but since I have taken over the body, I have to make a new decision which is becoming a mage by any means possible. Well, that's all I know for now.

That night, I returned to my room, thanks to the servants who showed me to the place.

Unexpectedly, it was a nice place. Though small, it was better than my old room in the real world.

After I had laid down to sleep, a knock came to my door and I furrowed because I wasn't expecting anyone.

Still, I stood up and went to the door. Upon opening it, I froze seeing who it was.

"Why are you surprised to see me?" She asked me, walking past me into my room.

"Ma, what are you doing h— I mean, what can I do for you?" I asked her.

Of all the people that would come into my room late at night, it was she? My adopted mother?

"We agreed to meet tonight, didn't we?" She asked me.

How is that possible? And why for crying out loud? What business does she have with me?

I wasn't expecting this.

"Or, did you change your mind?" She asked and approached me from behind. I quickly turned around and moved away from her. Instantly, she frowned. "Are you avoiding me?" She asked, angry.

How am I going to reply her? I don't know her relationship with the owner of this body so what was I going to do?

"Ma, the thing is that I am not myself so whatever... Let it hold," I said.

She paused, her eyes glued on me. She said nothing, no frown, no smile... Just a blank expression.

..."Fine!" She said and turned around. She left my room without another word.

Though I was relieved that she had finally left, something within was telling me that something was about to happen, I just couldn't point out what it was.

I deeply sighed and walked back to the bed after closing the door and making sure that it was locked. Honestly, being in this world wasn't easy at all and I want so bad to return to my world. Sadly, the only option is completing all three main tasks and I didn't know when that is going to be possible.

I guess my life here will be an extremely troublesome one.

Lying on the bed, I tried to sleep but thinking about all the problems, my heart was troubled and I couldn't sleep. Nevertheless, I forced myself to sleep and how I finally slept off, I had no idea about.

The next morning, I woke up to the sounds of the morning birds and when I opened my door, the morning sun hit me. Surprisingly, it wasn't harsh like ours, it was rather soothing to the skin.

"Morning, Quinn," Lusi said walking towards me with a rather unusual smile.

"Morning," I replied and went out to meet her. Looking at her, she was happy. "What's the occasion?" I asked her.

"You mean?" She asked.

"I meant, why are you happy?"

"Oh, guess what today is?" She asked me.

I thought hard but nothing came up.

"Sorry, I can't remember," I replied and she frowned instantly.

After frowning for a while, she sighed and said it. "Today is your birthday!"

Wait what? Today should be my birthday in the real world. How come it's the same here?!

"Did you forget?" She asked me, frowning. "How can you forget something so important!"

"No, I didn't forget. I was just playing tricks," I lied immediately.

"That's better," she mumbled and smiled. "Let's go and meet up with Chen, he's waiting for us."

With that, I followed Lusi over to the place Chen was waiting. As soon as we arrived at the garden, Chen pulled out a dagger and gave it to me.

"That's your birthday gift," he said.

I took it, staring at it with a mixed feeling. I didn't know what to do with it and how to use it.

"Since you love using knives, I bought you that one. It's a magic item though so be careful how you use it and who you use it on," Chen said.

"Understood," I replied. "Thank you for the gift."

"It's what I owe you," Chen said and I smiled.

While we were talking, a servant came to us.

"Young master, Quinn, the Lady sends for you," she said to me.

"Why is she looking for me?" I asked, glancing at Chen and Lusi who shrugged their shoulders with no reply.

"You should go and find out for yourself instead of asking us," Chen said and Lusi nodded.

"Perhaps she remembers that today is your birthday," Lusi tipped in.

They were calm about it but not me, not after what happened beime and her last night.

"Come on, Quinn!" Lusi urged me.

"You've never been shy of mother before, what's happening to you now?" Chen asked , staring at me with a confused face.

I couldn't blame them, they have no idea what I was passing through.

"I'll go but can the two of you follow behind?" I asked them.

They glanced at each briefly before nodding.

Relieved, I followed the servant and we headed to the woman's quarters.

When we got there, she was sitting under a large tree, a cup of tea set before her.

She looked up and smiled but after seeing her children trailing behind me, she frowned. I couldn't help but be relieved that they came with me.

"Ma, you sent for me," I said, bowing my head a little. It was something I learnt from the two siblings.

"Yes, I did send for you," she said and glanced at her children. "The two of you should leave, I want to have a talk with your brother."

"Okay mother." Chen replied and left with his sister.

She said nothing until she had made sure that they had completely left and then she stood up and approached me.

"Why do I feel like you are disappointed," she whispered to me.

I kept quiet, watching her every move. Inwardly, I had already decided that if she tries to touch me, I will push her away and then run.

"Well, I called you here for something else," she said and walked back to her seat.

I was taken by surprise and while watching her, she pulled out a folded paper from thin air.

"Have it," she said and threw the thing at me.

I caught it immediately and opened it. It had a flower drawn on it.

"That is the frost flower," she said. "It appears every one thousand years. It is said to have the ability of even bringing the dead back to life."

"What do you want me to do?" I asked her.

She glanced at me with a weird expression before replying. "Have you forgotten that you have only a month to live?"

"Wait what?" I subconsciously yelled. "I mean, how is that possible?" I composed myself though I was still in huge shock.

"This is the reason why you've always turned blind eyes to magic, isn't it? You were born with a cold heart and have being frail since young age. I promised you to get a solution and this the best I can do for you. Take it, find it however you can and cure yourself."
