Chapter 16 - Chapter Sixteen: Ashes and Ivy

The campus of Xinglan Elite Academy shimmered under the late autumn sun. Marble spires and gothic columns rose high into the sky like silent sentinels watching over the secrets buried beneath generations of the wealthy and powerful.

Bai Lianhua adjusted her coat as she walked through the iron gates. She had returned—not as the same girl who was exiled in shame—but as the heiress of the Bai family, the rising star of high society, and someone with more secrets than she could afford to share.

All around her, whispers followed her footsteps.

"She's back?"

"Didn't she drop out after the scandal?"

"I heard she got into an engagement with President Mo…"

Lianhua ignored them all. She had learned that power didn't come from explanation—it came from silence, from mystery, from walking like she owned every marble tile beneath her heel.

She was here for a reason.

To reclaim her past.

To dominate her present.

And to face the one ghost she had yet to confront—Li Shenyan.

The Classroom Reunion

The lecture hall buzzed with conversation until the professor entered, commanding attention with a single wave. Lianhua slid into her seat at the back row, her fingers tapping lightly against the desk. A few old acquaintances nodded in cautious acknowledgment, while others simply stared.

Then, halfway through the lecture, the classroom door opened.

And the world tilted.

Li Shenyan walked in, tall and lean, dressed in an all-black suit with the faintest trace of arrogance in his stride. His once-boyish charm had matured into something dangerously captivating. The air around him changed—condensed. Several students froze.

And when his eyes scanned the room, they landed directly on her.

Not a flicker of surprise.

Not a blink.

Just a slow, sardonic smile.

As if he had known all along that she'd be here.

Lianhua's stomach twisted.

Old Flames, New Fires

"Bai Lianhua," he said after class, appearing beside her like a shadow. His voice still had that low, deliberate cadence that once made her chest flutter. "You look better than I expected. I thought betrayal aged people."

She narrowed her eyes. "Funny. I was thinking the same about you."

He chuckled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Still sharp. Still dangerous. But I wonder, are you here for redemption… or revenge?"

Lianhua kept her tone even. "That depends. Are you still the man who watched me fall and said nothing?"

His smirk wavered for a moment.

"I warned you," he said quietly. "I told you that world would eat you alive."

"And it did. But I came back sharper. Hungrier." She stepped closer. "So tell me, Shenyan. What do you want?"

"To finish what we started."

The Social Battlefield

Xinglan Academy wasn't just about academics—it was a war zone of influence, image, and alliances. Students weren't just heirs and heiresses; they were future CEOs, diplomats, and puppetmasters.

Within days of Lianhua's return, the academy was abuzz.

A high-stakes debate competition was announced—one sponsored by the Mo Consortium and broadcast across elite networks.

Winners would gain prestige, direct invitations to internship programs, and media attention.

It wasn't a coincidence.

Mo Chen was behind this.

A test. A challenge. A warning.

The selection of representatives turned into a political minefield, and at the center of it was a bombshell:

Li Shenyan and Bai Lianhua were placed on opposing teams.

A perfect storm.

Allies and Enemies

"Watch your back," a soft voice whispered as Lianhua reviewed documents in the library. She turned to find a girl with violet-dyed hair and a crescent-shaped scar beneath her left eye.

"Who are you?" Lianhua asked.

"A friend. For now." The girl smirked. "Name's Xue Lin. Top of the strategy department. And not a fan of Shenyan."

Lianhua tilted her head. "Why?"

"He's charming, brilliant, and manipulative. Which means he's dangerous. And he doesn't like to lose—especially to women he used to love."

Lianhua's gaze darkened. "Good. Because I don't intend to lose either."

The Debate: Sparks and Sabotage

The day of the competition arrived. The auditorium was packed. Cameras lined the walls. Students dressed like royalty, and professors acted like they were judging an international summit.

The topic?

"Is power earned or inherited?"

It couldn't have been more personal.

Li Shenyan delivered his arguments with razor-sharp logic and emotional pull. He spoke of bloodlines, dynasties, and the inevitability of legacy. The audience was enraptured.

Then it was Lianhua's turn.

She stood at the podium, eyes blazing.

"Power inherited is fragile," she said. "It rests on blood, not will. But power earned? It's unbreakable. It's forged in pain. In exile. In humiliation. And it comes back to reclaim what was stolen."

She met Shenyan's gaze as applause erupted.

For a moment, his expression cracked.

The Twist

After the debate, Lianhua returned to her dorm and found a letter slipped under the door.

It wasn't signed.

But it said:

"He didn't just watch you fall. He helped you fall. Check the scholarship files from three years ago. Room 314. Trust no one—especially not him."

Her hands trembled as she held the note.

Was it true?

Had Li Shenyan—her first love—betrayed her all along?

She needed proof.

And she would find it.

No matter what it cost.
