Chapter 3 - [3] Job

In YGGDRASIL, the game differed vastly from traditional ones, with a punishing death penalty: losing five levels per death, and if insufficient levels remained, the account was deleted.

To mitigate this cost, one needed revival magic or pay-to-win items like Resurrection Rings or Revival Wands.

Adam had no such items.

He doubted that even with his "Player" Talent, death would grant an automatic revival.

After all, this was a real New World, not a game.

He couldn't afford to be reckless!

Gnawing on the tough black bread, Adam's hand brushed the short sword at his waist, purchased for a silver coin.

Without "Item Appraisal" Magic, he couldn't access the sword's stats.

But even without magic, Adam knew it was an utterly ordinary weapon, offering no attribute bonuses.

He'd bought it not just for self-defense but because touching it revealed how to unlock a job class!

Buzz!

[Contact with Weapon: Short Sword. Acquired Basic Job Information: Fighter.]

[Accept Job?]

Adam held the sword before him, and after a moment, the prompt appeared on his status panel.

"No!"

He silently declined in his mind.

The job prompt vanished from the panel. This wasn't the first time; it had appeared when he bought the sword.

Including this instance, Adam had rejected it twice.

He'd discovered that holding specific weapons for a time triggered job prompts. At the weapon shop, he'd touched a unique shield, unlocking a mid-tier job called "Black Guardian." However, he couldn't take it, as it required the prerequisite "Guardian" basic job.

This thrilled him, so much that, under the shopkeeper's murderous glare, he handled every weapon he could.

Sadly, aside from the shield, all triggered only the "Fighter" basic job.

In YGGDRASIL, jobs were divided into three tiers:

- Basic Jobs (15 levels)

- Mid-Tier Jobs (10 levels)

- High-Tier/Special Jobs (5 levels)

Each tier capped at its respective level limit.

With over 2,000 jobs in YGGDRASIL, the system was vast, ensuring almost no two players were identical unless deliberately built that way.

When buying the sword, Adam realized he could acquire a job but hadn't done so yet for a critical reason.

Level 100 was the cap!

All basic jobs occupied 15 levels. To face Nazarick's forces, a pure Fighter or Magic Caster build was inadequate, easily countered.

In other words, to avoid glaring weaknesses, Adam needed at least one basic Fighter job and one basic Magic Caster job.

Together, that was 30 levels, leaving only 70 for further choices.

He had to be meticulous!

A single misstep in job composition could be catastrophic, and the margin for error was razor-thin.

Chewing the dry black bread, Adam furrowed his brow, sitting against the wall with his head lowered, eyes flickering with contemplation.

He had little clarity on choosing basic jobs and hesitated to commit.

Without Nazarick's looming threat, facing the New World's natives wouldn't require such agonizing deliberation.

The only true threats here were the True Dragon Lords.

Moreover, reaching level 100 quickly wasn't impossible with a shortcut.

YGGDRASIL's job system didn't require maxing out any single job. Taking 100 different jobs would instantly make a player level 100.

But such a level 100 was pathetically weak, utterly worthless.

Since learning of his transmigration yesterday, Adam had been pondering how to close the gap with the Great Tomb of Nazarick if he became its enemy.

His conclusions boiled down to two strategies.

1. Exploit New World-exclusive techniques absent in YGGDRASIL, such as Martial Arts, the Re-Estize Kingdom's treasures like Razor Edge.

2. Acquire a Special Job!

Special Jobs were more powerful than high-tier jobs, granting unique skills or effects surpassing even super-tier magic.

Only with a Special Job did Adam believe he could stand a chance, one-on-one, against Nazarick's Floor Guardians.

Tap! Tap! Tap!

Footsteps emerged from the bustling crowd, stopping before Adam, who crouched in the corner, head bowed in troubled thought.

A shadow blocked the stifling sunlight, bringing a hint of coolness.

Snapping back to reality, Adam noticed the shadow on the ground. His heart tightened, but he forced a blank expression and looked up at the figure before him.

It was a boy.

Short golden hair, with bangs nearly covering his eyes, resembling a mushroom cut, gave a soft, timid first impression.

He was young, dressed plainly but in clothes far finer than Adam's copper-coin rags.

Staring at the golden-haired boy, Adam froze briefly, a flash of surprise in his dark brown eyes.

Nfirea?

The future "genius alchemist." One of the few humans Ainz himself valued highly.

Though his appearance differed slightly from the main story's timeline, the overall look was unmistakable, making recognition easy.

"Hello, are you in some kind of trouble?"

Nfirea spoke softly, his tone shy but sincere.

Trouble?

The question caught Adam off guard.

Glancing at the half-eaten black bread in his hand, his crouched posture, and the air of dejection he exuded, Adam understood.

Damn it! He's pitying me!

His mouth twitched, but he replied flatly, "No."

"What are you doing, Nfirea?" A cold voice came from behind.

A diminutive figure, barely five feet tall, with pale hair wrapped in a green headscarf, approached. The unassuming old woman's expression was icy.

Hearing her call the golden-haired boy by name, Adam thought, It's definitely Nfirea.

If he'd had any doubts, they were gone now.

Adam glanced at Nfirea again.

This was a true talent.

Possessing dual variant jobs, Alchemist (Genius) and Pharmacist (Genius), unique to the New World, they were akin to innate gifts.

The (Genius) tag allowed Nfirea to learn more skills for those jobs, access abilities beyond his level, and enhance their power and potency.

He'd crafted the New World's mythical Gods Blood in just a few years, equivalent to YGGDRASIL's low-tier red potions, using local herbs.

Nazarick had plenty of such potions, but they'd eventually deplete. Nfirea's ability to produce them explained Ainz's interest.

Beyond that, Nfirea had a Talent: Unlimited Item Usage!

This allowed him to use any item, including magic scrolls, weapons, or race-restricted gear mismatched with his job.

Even guild weapons, exclusive to guild players, could be wielded normally!

Adam took a deep mental breath. Such a talent marked Nfirea as a high-quality human in the New World.

To some extent, he could even threaten Nazarick!
