Trapped In Paradise

Volume 3 Chapter 50 / Chapter 555: A Grown Daughter Can't Be Kept at Home

"A daughter really can't be kept at home once she's grown up..."

Sitting on the sofa, Ning Juan let out a helpless sigh into her phone.

"Tell me, do you think there's something wrong with her head? She's so pretty, yet she just had to fall for some poor guy."

"Look at An Han, the one I play mahjong with. She's not even much prettier than Ning Chu, but she married a rich second-generation heir. When they got married, her bride price was an entire apartment."

"I'm not even asking for perfectly matching family backgrounds, but at the very least Wen Yang's family ought to have a home of their own."

"I have no idea what kind of love potion he fed Ning Chu. She's so devoted that she insisted on getting married. They even pried open my cabinet. Come fix it for me when you get home tonight."

"My situation back then? Why are you bringing me into this?"

"Get your ass home tonight! Just wait until I get my hands on you!"

Her sore spot had been hit.

Fuming, she hung up the phone, tossed it aside, and slumped weakly against the sofa.

Back when they had been dating online, that man had known exactly what to say.

How had he become someone who couldn't utter a pleasant word now?

She recalled the sight of her daughter dragging Wen Yang out the door in such a hurry and let out another quiet sigh.

She should have expected this day would come ever since her son had become her daughter.

She just hadn't expected the scene to resemble her own past so closely that, for a moment, it felt as though she were looking at her younger self.

What she couldn't understand was this:

Ning Chu had only become a girl during her freshman year of college.

How had she found a boyfriend in less than half a year?

How had she gotten married just four years later, becoming someone else's precious little wife?

Then she thought about her eldest child, Ning Yuan...

"Why aren't they back yet? It's almost evening."

She glanced at the time and immediately guessed where Ning Chu and Wen Yang had spent the day.

"They only come home once or twice a year, and they still spend every day glued to each other."

She sank deeper into the sofa, calculating when she should leave to pick up Black Bean from school while wondering which restaurant to take everyone to that evening.

After all, this was her daughter's wedding day.

Even if they couldn't afford a proper wedding ceremony yet, they should at least have a good meal together.

Just as she was lost in thought, the elevator outside stopped.

When she stepped out of the kitchen, she saw her daughter opening the front door.

Ning Chu looked radiant, her complexion rosy and healthy, though her walking was just a little awkward.

Just as I thought...

One glance was enough for her to know exactly where the two of them had spent the day.

"M-Mom..."

Ning Chu smiled guiltily, trying to ingratiate herself.

The tail hidden beneath her skirt slipped out and wagged behind her like a little puppy as she approached.

"Here's your household registration booklet... and your membership card."

Ning Juan accepted them with a gloomy expression before looking up at Wen Yang.

She had to admit, her son-in-law's physical stamina was impressive.

He'd already been kept busy for half the night yesterday.

Today they'd spent most of the day out as well.

Yet he still showed no signs of exhaustion whatsoever.

If anything, he'd worn the succubus out so thoroughly that she was walking with a limp.

"So, you've got the marriage certificate?"

"Mm."

Ning Chu knew what she'd done had been rather outrageous.

Avoiding her mother's eyes, she pulled her own and Wen Yang's marriage certificates out of her shoulder bag and handed them over.

"Oh, you..."

Ning Juan only glanced at the cover before rubbing her temples.

"Just keep them."

"Okay."

She looked at Wen Yang again.

At this point, no matter how dissatisfied she was with his family situation, she had no choice but to accept reality.

To be fair, Wen Yang was hardworking.

After only a year as an intern, he was already earning over ten thousand yuan a month.

But if he also had to shoulder the burden of buying a home, that income wouldn't stretch very far.

"Earn more money and buy a house. Don't keep making Ning Chu rent apartments with you forever."

"Mom, I'll buy one as soon as I can. I'll try to find a place nearby so Ning Chu can come back and visit you whenever she has time."

Ning Juan clearly didn't believe him, giving a dismissive snort, though she still nodded.

Realistically speaking, while this apartment wasn't large and was an old building from the previous century, it was still located in the city center.

New apartments nearby sold for thirty to fifty thousand yuan per square meter.

No matter how hard a recent graduate worked, buying one wasn't something that could be accomplished through effort alone.

"What's the rush? The economy isn't doing well anyway. Housing prices are falling. Maybe in a few years they'll be as cheap as cabbage."

Ning Juan shot her daughter an irritated glare.

Ning Chu immediately shut her mouth and awkwardly looked away.

"So, are we eating out tonight or eating at home?"

"At home, maybe?"

Ning Chu was worried her mother might invite a whole crowd of relatives and friends.

"It's your wedding, for heaven's sake!"

Ning Juan rapped Ning Chu on the head several times in exasperation.

"You think getting married is the same as buying clothes or groceries?!"

"Ow, ow, ow! That hurts!"

Ning Chu cried out in pain, covering her head with both hands as she kept backing away until she was cornered against the wall.

In truth, it hadn't hurt very much at all. Her mother had only given her a few light taps for show, but Ning Chu still put on a pitiful expression.

"It's settled then! Tonight we're going to eat at a restaurant!"

"Who are you inviting?"

"Your brother, Uncle, Black Bean..."

Ning Juan looked at Wen Yang.

"What about you? Do you have any relatives? Should we invite your parents?"

Wen Yang thought about it for a moment before shaking his head.

"My uncles probably won't have time to come."

"Then forget it."

Ning Juan sighed gloomily.

"What a mess this has all turned into..."

Watching her own daughter foolishly entrust the rest of her life to a man left her with a jumble of emotions—a bitterness she couldn't quite put into words.

Fortunately, while her new son-in-law wasn't wealthy, he was young and physically strong.

He probably wouldn't be drained dry by her daughter, so hopefully they wouldn't end up in the same situation she herself had experienced years ago.

She examined Wen Yang carefully.

Wen Yang responded with an honest, simple smile, looking every bit like a loyal golden retriever.

"Exercise regularly. Keep working out. Don't let yourself get fat after you're married."

Speaking from experience, Ning Juan offered what she considered the most practical advice.

"I work out twice a week. Don't worry."

Wen Yang smiled and nodded as he gently wrapped an arm around Ning Chu's shoulders.

Only Ning Chu wore a bitter expression.

Her mother had no idea that she was actually the one who couldn't keep up.

More often than not, she would already be hoarse from begging for mercy, only for Wen Yang to keep going until she passed out.

"Let's go pick up Ning Xin from school. Then we'll head straight to the restaurant."

Ning Juan turned and went into the bedroom to change clothes.

"Good thing Mom isn't that angry..."

Ning Chu let out a sigh of relief.

She had been fully prepared for her mother's thunderous wrath.

Wen Yang finally relaxed as well. Sitting down on the sofa, he gave a wry smile.

"I honestly thought she was going to beat me up."

"You're tough as nails anyway. What are you afraid of?"

Ning Chu sat close beside him, leaning comfortably against his shoulder.

"I'm so tired... and we have to go out again in a bit..."

Wen Yang gently stroked the little succubus's head. Her long, smooth hair felt like silk beneath his fingers.

"Give me a few years. I'll give you a proper wedding."

"Weddings are so much trouble. We'd be better off spending the money on traveling."

"Didn't you promise Lily and Xinya that you'd invite them to your wedding banquet?"

Ning Chu paused for a moment.

"Oh, right~"

"And we can scam a little gift money out of them."

The little succubus was incredibly lazy.

Something that many women considered one of the most important, once-in-a-lifetime events—their wedding—she simply thought was too much trouble.

Helplessly, Wen Yang made another suggestion.

"And wedding photos. Tomorrow we'll go to a photography studio and have a set taken."

"Eh... that's such a hassle too~ And it costs several thousand yuan. So expensive."

"I'm afraid you'll regret not doing it later. You dummy."

"You're the dummy. I'm trying to save you money, okay?"
