Chapter 73 - Chapter 72 - Susanoo-no-Mikoto

The van continued its journey along a road flanked by silent bamboo groves, gradually moving away from the bustling city of Kyoto.

On the horizon, through veils of morning mist, one of the many ancient temples of the region rose, but this one was not ordinary.

It was the eastern entrance to Urakyoto.

Since Youkais live in a separate space far from human eyes, to enter their territory, one had to pass through one of the four existing entrances, and the eastern one was precisely the one used for formalities...

When the van stopped in front of the white torii gate, the very air seemed to vibrate.

Kazuya stepped out first.

He looked around.

The three women by his side emerged in perfect synchrony.

"They're coming..." murmured Ishtar, her red eyes turning toward the courtyard.

From within the temple, a small entourage approached. First came four youkai guardians, each wearing dark hakamas and white fox masks. Their steps were silent, but their presence was as sharp as a blade. Right behind them was a familiar figure, small in stature but with wild energy barely contained.

"Kazuya-sama!" shouted Kunou, rushing forward.

The little golden-haired kitsune leaped into his arms before any formalities could take place.

Kazuya caught her with ease, giving a half-smile.

"Hey to you too, Kunou."

After spending a night together, surprisingly, the little girl started seeing him as an "older brother" and became quite affectionate with him. He supposed it was due to his overwhelming [Charisma], not that he minded—Kunou was adorable...

She grinned excitedly, wagging her fox tail with enthusiasm.

"I forgot to thank you for the festival yesterday. It was so much fun! Oh, I see you brought Aunt Spear, Aunt Star, and Aunt Underground Princess!"

"Aunt... what?" muttered Ereshkigal, surprised and somewhat embarrassed.

Altria cleared her throat, uncomfortable with the sudden informality.

But before they could say anything, all eyes turned to the figure that had appeared under the main gate.

Yasaka walked forward, the guards parting to make way for her.

Kazuya looked at her.

His first impression?

She was... beautiful. In a serene, mature, and at the same time dangerously captivating way that could unsettle any man's common sense. Her golden kimono outlined her generous curves, and without effort, she exuded an almost regal elegance. He had a moment of internal silence when his gaze fell on her wide hips, her striking bust, the way the sash cinched her waist—

Crunch.

"...Agh."

Reality snapped back as Ishtar's foot dug into his. Kazuya lost his breath for a second and, reflexively, let Kunou slip from his arms, gently setting her on the ground.

"Kunou..." called Yasaka in a soft but firm tone. "Remember where you are. This is not a game."

The little kitsune's golden ears drooped immediately. She took a step back, her eyes welling up.

"I apologize for my daughter's behavior," Yasaka said as she finished approaching, bowing slightly.

It was a polite, almost automatic gesture, but it didn't go unnoticed. As she bowed, the generous volume under her kimono shifted with the movement, and Kazuya averted his gaze reflexively. For a moment, he felt Altria cross her arms more tightly and Ishtar raise an eyebrow... dangerously.

Kazuya cleared his throat, regaining focus.

"No need to apologize, Yasaka-san. It didn't bother me at all."

He glanced at Kunou beside him, who was still downcast, and reached out, gently ruffling her golden hair.

"I like her lively spirit. It makes the atmosphere less tense."

Kunou slowly raised her eyes, and her little ears perked up happily.

"Really?"

"Really. Just don't knock me over next time, okay?"

She giggled softly, relieved.

Yasaka observed the exchange with a calm gaze, her gentle smile unwavering. She drew his attention as she introduced herself.

"As you likely already know, I am the Leader of the Youkai Faction, Yasaka. It's a pleasure to meet the famous Ryougi Kazuya... Or should I call you Director of Chaldea? The Strongest of Humanity? Or perhaps my daughter's companion at impromptu festivals...?"

Kazuya gave a slight, slightly awkward laugh.

"There are many titles, but I prefer just Kazuya." He then straightened his posture and gave a brief bow of his head, formal enough for the moment. "It's an honor to meet you, Yasaka-dono. Thank you for the reception."

"It's a pleasure to have you here," Yasaka replied with the same subtle bow, her tone now slightly warmer. "I know visits like this are rarely just for courtesy, but I hope you at least enjoy our hospitality."

Kazuya was about to respond when something shifted beside him.

"Yo~."

The lazy, playful voice appeared out of nowhere, as if it came from a corner no one was looking at.

In the blink of an eye, Shuten Douji materialized from her spiritual form right beside Kazuya, as if she'd been there all along.

She wore a light purple yukata, her hair tied in a side braid, and held a gourd in her hands, swinging it lightly as she smiled. Her purple eyes were half-closed, as if she were always on the verge of a nap or a joke.

"You showed up more dressed up than I expected, Anata~," she said, running a finger along the sleeve of his black haori. "You look cute."

"You could stop popping out of nowhere like that," Kazuya said, a mix of exhaustion and familiarity in his tone. "You're going to give someone a heart attack."

"But I only showed up when the mood was nice, didn't I?" She winked.

Ishtar huffed lightly behind him, crossing her arms.

"Of course. You never miss a chance to stir up trouble."

Shuten laughed, ignoring the comment.

Kazuya sighed, running a hand through his hair as if he could already predict where this was headed if he let it continue.

"Shuten, thanks for all your hard work this week..." he said in a firmer tone, nodding toward the space just behind him. "Feel free to stand behind me for now until the meeting's over..."

The oni clicked her tongue with a theatrical air of annoyance.

"And here I thought I'd get VIP treatment..."

"You already did..."

She huffed, gave a mockingly exaggerated bow, and took three light steps back, positioning herself just behind him as instructed. She was still smiling but obeyed without real protest.

Yasaka, observing everything, blinked slowly, somewhat incredulous.

Altria caught her gaze and gave a brief sidelong glance, as if to say, "He has that effect."

Ishtar smirked, pleased with her small silent victory. And Ereshkigal merely sighed at her sister's antics...

Noticing the women's looks, Yasaka snapped out of her surprise and adjusted her kimono, trying not to seem too startled. Over the past week, though she liked to think she and Shuten had become something akin to "drinking buddies," the reality was that even she, as the leader of the Youkai Faction, had no real control over the oni.

Fortunately, Shuten spent most of her time drinking, singing to Kunou, or napping in the garden. So far, no major incidents.

Until now.

"Impressive," Yasaka commented, turning to Kazuya with a slight smile on her lips. "I confess I thought only an army of drunken monks could control Shuten Douji, but... it seems one man is enough."

"It doesn't always work," Kazuya replied, keeping an eye on her just in case. "But sometimes she listens."

"Lies," Shuten sang behind him, swinging her gourd. "I just like the way he gives orders."

"Shuten."

"Alright, alright~. Respectful silence, check."

Yasaka held back a laugh and gestured for them to proceed.

"Let's head to the inner pavilion. The entrance to Urakyoto is ahead..."

Kazuya nodded and took the first step, followed by Ishtar, Ereshkigal, Artoria Lancer, and Shuten Douji.

As they walked through the temple's corridors, sunlight filtered through the gaps between ancient wooden columns. A respectful silence hung over the group, broken only by the soft sound of their footsteps on the tatami mats.

Soon, they reached a small inner courtyard. Ahead, a moss-covered stone archway marked the boundary between the visible world and what lay hidden. A thick, milky mist covered the passage just beyond.

"Stay close to me and the guards," Yasaka warned, her tone more serious. "This mist distorts the senses of those who don't belong to Urakyoto. Ordinary humans can never find the way in. Even supernatural beings can end up walking in circles if they're unprepared."

Kazuya raised an eyebrow. "A magical illusion?"

"Not exactly..." Yasaka replied, glancing over her shoulder. "The mist is part of Urakyoto itself. A natural defense instinct. It changes with time, but it always serves its purpose."

Ishtar stepped closer to Kazuya, staying alert to the distortions around them. Altria and Ereshkigal moved closer in silence, out of caution. Shuten merely chuckled softly, swinging her gourd as if crossing a mystical barrier were part of a morning stroll.

As they entered the mist, the world seemed... suspended.

The sound of their footsteps vanished. The light flickered, as if the sky were filtered through stained glass. For a moment, Kazuya felt as though reality itself turned pale and distant, like a moving dream.

But then, as if passing through a curtain of cotton, the mist cleared.

And on the other side, the world was entirely different.

A village.

No, an entire city.

Wooden houses with curved roofs, red torii gates, and paper lanterns scattered along the streets, a river winding through the center, small stone bridges connecting districts. It was like an alternate Kyoto, preserved in a snapshot of time. Traditional, alive... and utterly impossible by any modern logic.

Altria stopped beside Kazuya, astonished. "It's... enormous."

"And full of life," murmured Ereshkigal.

Ishtar let out an impressed whistle. "I have to admit... this place is much prettier than I expected."

Kazuya observed everything with keen interest, curiosity sparking in his eyes. "How does this place work...? I mean, this seems like more than just an alternate dimension."

Yasaka stopped beside him, crossing her arms, her golden eyes gazing at the village below as if it were beyond comprehension.

"Even I don't fully know," she replied. "Urakyoto was created long ago... they say it was the work of Susanoo-no-Mikoto."

"Susanoo? The storm god?"

She nodded slightly.

"After defeating Yamata no Orochi, he is said to have used part of that divine serpent's essence to create this place between worlds. A refuge for youkais and spirits who no longer had a place in modern Japan. Its structure was shaped by his will... but the mist, the space, and the boundaries he set... no one fully understands them."

Kazuya placed a hand on his chin, thoughtful. "So this place is... a direct legacy of a Japanese god."

From what he recalled of "High School DxD", the origins of Urakyoto were unknown; it was only stated to have been created similarly to the Devils' Rating Game fields. The Rating Game field is where all Rating Game matches take place, located within a section of the Dimensional Gap, protected by a barrier. That field was created by Ajuka and the technicians under his supervision. The method must have been similar, but this one was created by a Japanese god after slaying his enemy?

As a good Japanese citizen familiar with the story, Yamata no Orochi is a gigantic serpent with eight heads and eight tails. It has glowing red eyes and a red belly. The beast is so large that its body spans the distance of eight valleys and eight hills. Pine trees and cypresses grow on its back, and its body is covered in moss.

It appears in Japan's earliest written documents, the Kojiki and the Nihongi. The legend undoubtedly dates back to even more ancient times, to prehistory.

According to these documents, centuries ago, the storm god Susanoo was expelled from heaven and descended to earth at Mount Torikama, near the Hi River in Izumo Province. There, he encountered an elderly couple of gods, Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi, who were weeping. When Susanoo asked why they were crying, they explained that they once had eight daughters, but every year, the eight-headed, eight-tailed serpent Yamata no Orochi demanded one as a sacrifice. Now, only their eighth and last daughter, Kushinada Hime, remained. The time was approaching for Yamata no Orochi to demand another sacrifice.

Susanoo explained that he was the elder brother of the sun goddess Amaterasu and offered to slay the beast in exchange for Kushinada Hime's hand in marriage. The elderly couple agreed, and Susanoo set his plan in motion to defeat the serpent.

First, Susanoo transformed Kushinada Hime into a comb, which he placed in his hair. Then, he asked Ashinazuchi and Tenazuchi to build a large fence with eight gates. At each gate, they set up a platform, and on each platform, they placed a barrel. They poured extremely strong sake into each barrel. When they were done, they all waited for the serpent's arrival.

When Yamata no Orochi appeared, the great serpent slithered into the fence and noticed the potent sake. It plunged its eight heads into the barrels and drank the alcohol. Soon, the monster fell into a deep, drunken sleep. Susanoo seized the opportunity to attack. He hacked the enormous beast into tiny pieces with his sword. The carnage was so great that the Hi River flowed with blood. When Susanoo cut through the creature's fourth tail, his sword shattered. Examining the part of Yamata no Orochi's tail that broke his sword, Susanoo discovered another blade inside the creature's flesh: the legendary katana Murakumo (later known as Kusanagi no Tsurugi).

Susanoo eventually offered Murakumo as a gift to his sister Amaterasu and was allowed to return to heaven. The sword was passed down through generations in Japan's imperial lineage. It is one of the three pieces of the imperial regalia, along with the Yata no Kagami mirror and the Yasakani no Magatama jewel. Today, it is said that the sword, which came from the tail of Yamata no Orochi, is kept at the Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya.

And that was it... The myth from human records, but they were "human" records, after all.

It was a surprise that this myth had been the origin of the place where the Youkais live...

After hearing her words, Yasaka confirmed.

"Yes. And like everything made by a god... it's complicated. But it's our home."

Shuten, who had been listening while swinging her gourd, took a long swig and smiled, satisfied.

"Urakyoto, huh...? One of the places I loved most in this world, better than many bars I know."

"You only know bars," Ereshkigal retorted.

"And yet I'm an expert," Ishtar commented.

"Flattery, flattery," Shuten laughed.

Kazuya merely sighed, gazing at the horizon of that impossible city with a curious glint in his eyes. He crossed his arms, his eyes still fixed on the panorama, before speaking aloud without turning:

"If all this was created by Susanoo-no-Mikoto... then the Youkai Faction has a direct connection to the Japanese gods, right?"

The answer came before Yasaka could even open her mouth.

"Yes!" exclaimed Kunou, her fox ears springing up as if part of the response. "Oka-sama is a priestess of Amaterasu-sama! And there's also Inari-sama, who's our guardian!"

Kazuya turned to face her, surprised by the spontaneity of her reply. "Inari? As in... the goddess of fertility, rice, foxes, and prosperity?"

Kunou nodded vigorously, proud. "That's her! Sometimes she shows up at important ceremonies. But she's always disappearing. She's busy, you know?"

Yasaka let out a resigned sigh, still with her arms crossed, and took a few steps forward, stopping beside Kazuya.

"Kunou is right. Our faction has always maintained a close relationship with the deities of the Shinto pantheon. I serve as the current Priestess of Amaterasu, though the title is more ceremonial these days." She paused briefly, then added with a hint of regret: "But that connection... while it protects us, it also attracts trouble..."

Ishtar tilted her head slightly, curious. "Trouble from where?"

Yasaka narrowed her eyes, a cold glint passing through her irises.

"From the Five Principal Clans."

The mere mention of the name caused the youkai guards accompanying them to stiffen instantly. One of them clenched his fists, his eyes trembling with pure indignation behind the fox mask. Another muttered something under his breath that sounded like a restrained growl.

Kazuya didn't miss the reaction.

"From what I've heard, they have a neutral relationship with the Youkais? Does that mean it's only on the surface...?"

"So... they're bothered by your divine influence?"

Yasaka turned her face toward him, a faint but far-from-friendly smile on her lips.

"Indeed, we have a neutral relationship because we are allies of the Shinto gods, but that's all... The clan leaders don't like bowing to anything but their own pride... which makes things more complicated..." She turned her gaze back to the sleeping city in the valley, shrouded in its ancient mist. "...Even so, it's difficult to challenge a sacred territory built by Susanoo's hands and protected by Amaterasu."

Ishtar let out a soft whistle. "So you're kind of... untouchable to them?"

Yasaka laughed, this time with a bit more softness. "I wouldn't say untouchable. But we share the same allies, though some grudges from the past still linger between us and them... that's all."

Ereshkigal, who had been listening quietly until then, narrowed her eyes with interest.

"And what kind of grudges are those...?"

The question was soft but laced with genuine curiosity.

Yasaka closed her eyes for a moment and let out a long sigh, as if preparing to open an old chest full of thorns. Her arms slowly uncrossed, and when she opened her eyes, her expression had changed: now there was a shadow of melancholy on her face.

"It's because of Tamamo no Mae."

The name, spoken softly, seemed to carry a dense weight.

Even Shuten, who had been swinging her gourd, stopped moving. Ishtar raised an eyebrow, attentive. Kunou merely looked at her mother, confused, as if she didn't know the whole story.

Kazuya narrowed his eyes. He remembered that she had been sealed in the Uji Treasure House, a sacred facility managed by the Five Principal Clans...

According to history depicted in literature, noh, kabuki, bunraku, and other art forms, Tamamo no Mae was born about 3,500 years ago in what is now China. Her childhood is a mystery, but she eventually became a powerful sorceress. After hundreds of years, she became a white-faced, golden-furred kyūbi no kitsune—a nine-tailed fox with supreme magical power. Moreover, she was a master of manipulation. She used her charms and intelligence to advance her position and influence world affairs.

During the Shang Dynasty, Tamamo no Mae was known as Daji. She disguised herself as a beautiful woman and became the favorite concubine of King Zhou of Shang. Daji was a model of human depravity. She held orgies in the palace gardens. Her penchant for watching and inventing new forms of torture is legendary. Daji ultimately caused the fall of the entire Shang Dynasty. She managed to escape execution and fled to the kingdom of Magadha in India in 1046 BC.

In Magadha, she was known as Lady Kayō and became the consort of King Kalmashapada, known in Japan as Hanzoku. She used her beauty and charms to dominate the king, leading him to devour children, murder priests, and commit other unspeakable horrors. Eventually, either because she ran out of children to eat or because Kalmashapada began to turn away from her toward Buddhism, she fled back to China.

During the Zhou Dynasty, she called herself Bao Si and was known as one of the most desirable women in all of China. In 779 BC, she became the concubine of King You. Not content with being merely a mistress, she manipulated the king into deposing his wife, Queen Shen, and making Bao Si his new queen. Though beautiful, Bao Si rarely smiled. To please his beautiful wife, King You committed acts of such evil and atrocity that, in the end, all his nobles abandoned and betrayed him. Ultimately, King You was killed, and Bao Si was captured, ending the Western Zhou Dynasty in 771 BC. Somehow, Bao Si managed to escape again; she hid for many years.

Little is known about her activities until the 700s, when she reappeared disguised as a 16-year-old girl named Wakamo. She deceived the leaders of the 10th Japanese embassy to the Tang Dynasty—Kibi no Makibi, Abe no Nakamaro, and Ganjin—as they prepared to return to Japan. Wakamo joined the crew and sailed to Japan, where she hid for over 300 years.

In the 1090s, she resurfaced once more. This time, she transformed into a human baby and lay by the roadside. A couple found the baby and took her in, raising her as their daughter and naming her Mikuzume. She proved to be an extremely intelligent and talented young girl, so beautiful that she drew everyone's attention. At the age of seven, Mikuzume recited poetry before the emperor. His Imperial Majesty immediately took a liking to her and employed her as a servant in his court.

Mikuzume excelled in court, absorbing knowledge like a sponge. There wasn't a question she couldn't answer, whether about music, history, astronomy, religion, or Chinese classics. Her clothes were always pristine and wrinkle-free. She always smelled pleasant. Mikuzume had the most beautiful face in all of Japan, and everyone who saw her adored her.

During the summer of her 18th year, a poetry and music recital was held in her honor. During the recital, an unexpected storm fell upon the palace. All the candles in the recital hall went out, leaving the participants in darkness. Suddenly, a bright light emanated from Mikuzume's body, illuminating the room. Everyone in the court was amazed by her brilliance and declared that she must have had an exceptionally virtuous and holy past life. She was given the name Tamamo no Mae. Emperor Toba, already deeply fond of her, made her his consort.

Almost immediately after becoming the emperor's consort, he fell gravely ill. None of the court physicians could determine the cause, so the onmyōji Abe no Yasunari was summoned. Abe no Yasunari read the emperor's fortune and divined that he was marked by an evil omen. After that, the high priests and monks were called to the palace to pray for the emperor's health.

However, the best prayers of the high priests had no effect. The emperor continued to worsen. Abe no Yasunari was summoned again to read the emperor's fortune. This time, to his horror, the onmyōji discovered that the emperor's beloved, Tamamo no Mae, was the cause of his illness. She was a kitsune in disguise, shortening the emperor's life to seize power as Japan's ruler. Emperor Toba was reluctant to believe the diviner's words but agreed to test Tamamo no Mae just to be sure.

To save the emperor's life, Abe no Yasunari prepared the *Taizan Fukun no Sai*, the most secret and powerful spell known to onmyōdō. Tamamo no Mae was ordered to perform part of the ritual. They argued that an evil spirit would not be able to participate in such a sacred ritual. Though she was reluctant, the emperor's ministers persuaded her, saying it would increase her esteem in the court. She had no choice but to comply.

When the ritual was performed, Tamamo no Mae dressed even more beautifully than usual. She recited the sacred words as expected and performed her role flawlessly. But as she prepared to wield the ceremonial staff, she vanished. Abe no Yasunari's divination was confirmed. The court erupted in chaos.

Soon after, news arrived that women and children were disappearing near Nasuno in Shimotsuke Province. The court's sorcerers determined that Tamamo no Mae was the cause, and it was decided that she must be destroyed once and for all. The emperor summoned the finest warriors in the land and tasked the most exceptional among them, Kazusanosuke and Miuranosuke, with finding Tamamo no Mae. The warriors gladly accepted the honor. They purified themselves and set out with an army of 80,000 men to kill the nine-tailed kitsune.

Upon arriving in Nasuno, the army quickly found the kitsune. The warriors chased her for days, but the fox used her magical powers to deceive them repeatedly, escaping with ease. The army grew weary, and frustration set in. It seemed nothing they did was working. However, Kazusanosuke and Miuranosuke refused to accept the shame of defeat and vowed to press on. They trained harder, refined their tactics, and finally picked up the kitsune's trail.

One night, Miuranosuke had a prophetic dream. A beautiful young woman appeared before him, weeping. She pleaded, "Tomorrow I will lose my life to you. Please spare me." Miuranosuke flatly refused, and upon waking, the warriors set out again to find Tamamo no Mae. Sure enough, the next day, they captured her. Miuranosuke shot two arrows, one into her flank and another into her neck. Kazusanosuke swung his blade. It was over, just as the dream had foretold.

However, Tamamo no Mae's evil did not end with her death. A year after her death, Emperor Konoe passed away without heirs. The following year, his lover and former Emperor Toba also died. A succession crisis emerged between the forces loyal to Emperor Go-Shirakawa and those loyal to former Emperor Sutoku. This crisis sparked the rivalry between Fujiwara and Minamoto, leading to the Genpei War, the end of the Heian period, and the rise of the first shoguns. As if that weren't enough, Tamamo no Mae's spirit haunted a massive rock that killed any living being that touched it.

As he lost himself in thought about this, Yasaka continued.

"As you probably already know the story that's been circulating in Japanese history for years, everything depicted was more or less what happened, but she didn't actually die and was sealed. Those Miuranosuke and Kazusanosuke mentioned in the story were part of the Five Principal Clans. In fact, both were ancestors of two of the clans..."

"But before she became the powerful sorceress mentioned in the stories, she was the former leader of the Youkais during the early Heian period, and she was always a nine-tailed kitsune. She grew tired of her duties and disguised herself as a human to toy with the men of that era. And she succeeded. Far too well."

Kazuya frowned.

"And how were the Five Clans involved in this?" asked Ereshkigal.

"Directly? Emperor Toba was basically their ancestor. I don't know many details..." Yasaka confirmed. "All I know is that the entire legend of Tamamo no Mae in Japan involves them. She was a threat to the world... And they weren't exactly wrong. But..."

"But she was a youkai," Ishtar finished, her eyes narrowed. "And because of that, everything she did ended up reflecting on the entire faction."

Yasaka nodded, her tone now colder.

"Since then, the Five Clans have viewed us with suspicion. To them, we're a threat that remains silent only because of divine protection. Even generations later, even with Tamamo sealed... the remnants of fear and wounded pride have never fully faded."

One of the guards let out a low growl, as if he'd been stewing over this story for too long. Another muttered darkly:

"They still call us 'beasts in disguise'..."

Shuten laughed softly, as if amused by the disdain.

"Beasts? Maybe. But if those old men had a tenth of Tamamo's charm... Japan would've been a lot more fun."

"Shuten..." Kazuya warned, without much force.

"Alright, alright~. Just a bar comment."

Artoria Lancer, who had remained silent like a sentinel until then, spoke, her voice firm and low:

"Even when the sins of an ancient leader are real... it's unjust to condemn an entire nation for them. If every kingdom did that, there wouldn't be a single crown untainted by blood."

Yasaka looked at her with newfound respect and nodded slowly.

"Wise words. But the Five Clans don't care about justice. Only reputation and control."

Kazuya crossed his arms, thoughtful. "So, no matter how much time passes, the Five Clans still treat the Youkais with disdain... even though you're protected by Amaterasu and live in a world created by Susanoo?"

"They respect the gods. Not their representatives." Yasaka gave a faint, bitter smile. "To them, we've merely taken a place that wasn't rightfully ours."

Kunou frowned with a stubborn expression.

"But that's silly! Oka-sama is one of the most respected leaders of all time! And she's never done anything wrong!"

Yasaka gently placed a hand on her daughter's hair.

"Thank you, Kunou... But it's not just about right or wrong. It's about resentments that survive centuries."

"It's always like that," murmured Ereshkigal. "Nothing is harder to erase than wounded pride."

A brief silence fell over the group.

Before they finally reached their destination.
