Chapter 2 - The Deciding Factor

Isla's eyes fluttered open to the sound of her phone ringing, shrill and insistent. She groggily reached out to answer it, her mind still foggy from the early morning hour. But as she heard the words on the other end, her expression changed from sleepy to shocked. Her eyes widened, and her face went pale. The phone slipped from her hand, falling onto the bed with a soft thud.

Isla's hand instinctively went to her chest, as if trying to calm her racing heart. She felt a wave of fear wash over her.

She looked around her apartment, her eyes darting from one familiar object to another, but her gaze didn't linger on anything. She was in a state of panic, her senses on high alert.

Her phone rang again and, slowly she picked it up from the bed and could recognize the caller, upon hearing the information without thinking twice Isla swiftly got out of bed and moved to close the window slides, her hands shaking slightly as she fumbled with the latch. She then rushed to check if her door was locked, her heart racing with every creak of the floorboards.

She rubbed her hand through her hair, trying to process what was happening, and then down ther face, as if trying to wipe away the shock.

Isla's movements became more frantic as she grabbed a cloth and threw it on, not even bothering to check her appearance. She dashed out of the house, her mind consumed by the news she had just received.

Damien sat in the boardroom, surrounded by the directors of his company. He had called the meeting to discuss the recent losses they were experiencing, and the possible leak of their production samples to their rival, Cassian. Damien was determined to get to the bottom of the issue and find out who was responsible.

As he waited for the directors to arrive, Damien cracked open a plastic bottle of water and gulped down a generous amount. He needed to stay hydrated, both physically and mentally, to navigate the tense discussion that was about to begin. Damien's eyes scanned the room, searching for any sign of guilt or nervousness. But each face seemed impassive, giving away nothing.

The discussion began, with each director presenting their alibi for the time the samples was calculated to be leaked.

The directors spoke in hushed tones, their voices filled with tension and uncertainty. Damien listened intently, his mind racing with possibilities. He knew that he had to be careful, that one wrong move could spell disaster for the company.

After sitting for long hours, Damien proposed they discuss another time as he had another meeting to catch up with. He stood up, leaving the directors looking dazed and confused. The meeting had been productive, but Damien knew that there was still much work to be done.

As he left the boardroom, he adjusted the wrist watch on his left hand. He knew that he had made the right decision, that he needed to take a step back and regroup. He had a meeting with a potential investor, and he needed to be focused.

Isla had arrived at the scene of the crime. She looked around, her eyes wide with horror. She couldn't believe what she was seeing, the destruction and chaos that lay before her. Isla covered her mouth with her hands, trying to stifle a gasp. Her legs felt weak, and she stumbled, trying to maintain her balance.

The world around her seemed to spin, and Isla felt like she was going to collapse. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. She knew that she had to be strong, that she had to face whatever lay ahead.

As she looked around, Isla's mind began to process what she was seeing. She saw the police officers, the forensic team, and the paramedics. She saw the crowd of onlookers, their faces filled with curiosity and concern.

Isla's eyes landed on a figure in the distance, a figure that seemed familiar. It was her client she defended a day ago.

As she walked away from the scene, she knew that she had to get to the bottom of what had happened, that she had to find out who was responsible. And she was going to start by finding out who had called her that morning, and what they had meant by their cryptic message.

Isla's gaze fell upon a particular officer, who seemed to be in charge of the investigation. She approached him, her heart still racing with anxiety. "Excuse me, officer," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "Can you tell me what's going on here?"

The officer looked at her with a mixture of sympathy and curiosity. "I'm afraid it's a crime scene, ma'am," he replied. "We're still trying to piece together what happened. But it looks like there was an explosion of some kind."

Isla's eyes widened in horror. "An explosion?" she repeated. "What kind of explosion?"

The officer hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. "We're still investigating, but it looks like it might have been a deliberate act."

Isla knew the culprit of the recent murder case has not been apprehended yet, her client must have known who did it, she tried connecting the dot as she stood opposite the busy officer.

She introduced herself to the officer... "I'm Isla Bennett, a lawyer. The body lying over there is my client, I defended her days ago on a murder case.

The officer received her card glancing over it briefly, "I'll be asking you few questions then, i hope you don't mind?"

"I'm Andrew from the forensic department." He added.

Isla nodded in agreement as she was keen to get to the root of the whole matter.

"Can you come down to the station with me and give a look at the evidence?" Andrew asked.

Isla agreed then followed Andrew out of the scene. Her mind still can't believe what has happened.

She looked back as the lifeless body of her client and other affected by the explosion were being transported into the ambulance, a drop of tear fell ofd her dear eyes.
